Artist's Back to Basics

Is There a Painting Here?

Greetings! Human beings learn by comparison (last time I touched something red, I burnt my finger). I frequently question my actions, as well as other people’s, in a non critical and non judgemental way. I do this so that I can clearly define my own path and motives. In this article I will be asking “Why”? I will also present possible, though not by any means exhaustive, answers.

Causes of Dissatisfaction

Like many others, I have been inspired by, and tried to paint from a postcard, a picture in a magazine, or calendar. From the numerous groups that I have attended, many people including myself were often unhappy with the result. Based on my personal journey and searching, I believe the reason for this is multi-layered.

The first reason could be that during the early stages of our development as artists, we do not actually “see” what we are looking at. Another is that we may choose a subject that is too hard for us. (eg. too many greens). A third reason that Iskills they need to allow them to transfer what they see, onto paper.
