Sentimental Stems

There are a lot of pieces to create this delightful quilt, but the combination of soft colours and interesting shapes make this a stunning project.

Cheryl has fussy cut the appliqué shapes to increase the visual impact of the design: she cut the larger petal shape from exactly the same position on the same print fabric to feature a printed motif.

The Sentimental Star blocks consist of a number of components: Square in a Square, Flying Geese, Four Patch, Arrows and HSTs. Simply follow the steps to prepare the units, and then stitch them together to form the block. The corner blocks are an extension of the central block. Add some lovely wide borders — and wow!

Materials

• 1.7m (1⅞yd) white print fabric

• 1.5m (1⅝yd) green print fabric #1 (Flower block and Border 2)

• 30cm (⅜yd) green print fabric #2 (Sentimental Star and Split Star blocks)

• 40cm (½yd) aqua tone-on-tone print fabric (applique, Split Star block and diamond panel)

• 1.6m (1¾yd) pale aqua print fabric (sashing, Border 1 and binding)

• 80cm (⅞yd) cream tone-on-tone print fabric (Flower block background)

• 40cm (½yd) pink stripe print fabric (Flower block and diamond panel)

• 40cm (½yd) teal print fabric (Sentimental Star block and diamond panel)

• 40cm (½yd) dark pink print fabric #1 (applique and Sentimental Star block)

• 40cm (½yd) dark pink print fabric #2 (applique and Split Star block)

• 40cm (½yd) dark pink print fabric #3 (Split Star block)

• 30cm (⅜yd) light pink print fabric (applique and Split Star block)

• 40cm (½yd) green tone-on-tone print fabric (applique)

• 4.1m (4½yd) backing fabric

• Batting at least 200cm (82in) square

• Fusible web

• Stranded embroidery floss to match the applique fabrics

• Rotary cutter, ruler and mat

• Sewing machine with ¼in foot

• General sewing supplies
