Backwards Glance

If you look up one Robert John Edwards on the TT database, you might wonder why I spent nearly two years tracing this Welshman’s racing career. He never won a TT nor at the Manx GP, and raced just once on the Continent. He wasn’t in a works team and had no factory funding. It’s only when you know his story that you begin to appreciate what a remarkable rider Robin Jac Edwards (as he was known) truly was.

This was a man who, riding a clubman’s roadster, could beat the likes of Les Graham on a short circuit. He competed in the North West 200 and was only bested by the aces of the day. He competed on the TT mountain circuit nine times, and was always in the top ten when he finished a race. He sustained major injuries at the Belgian Grand Prix and five weeks later secured fourth place
