About this audiobook

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A poignant and tender story of love, loss, passion, and the fragile threads that bind families together from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Nightingale

"A beautifully simple, deeply compassionate story."—Diana Gabaldon

Annie Colwater's only child has just left home for school abroad. On that same day, her husband of twenty years confesses that he's in love with a younger woman. Alone in the house that is no longer a home, Annie comes to the painful realization that for years she has been slowly disappearing. Lonely and afraid, she retreats to Mystic, the small Washington town where she grew up, hoping that there she can reclaim the woman she once was—the woman she is now desperate to become again.

In Mystic, she is reunited with her first love, Nick Delacroix, a recent widower unable to cope with his grieving, too-silent six-year-old daughter, Izzie. Together, the three of them begin to heal, and, at last, Annie learns that she can love without losing herself. But just when she has found a second chance at happiness, her life is turned upside down again, and Annie must make a choice no woman should have to make. . . .

Meh. It's fine. It's interesting to see the author's growth curve in writing. This was written in 1999. If it had been a different author I would have expected less, but after books like The Nightingale and Winter Garden and The Great Alone, you just want more. This is perfectly respectable chick-lit. I enjoyed it enough and am glad she wrote books like this so we could get those other stories from her.

I liked it a lot. A bit too slow, but the bones of the story are good.

I loved this story. It was set back in time before cell phones and personal computers, you almost don’t miss the acknowledgement of all that! I didn’t! The author didn’t spend too much time on dwelling over the lost marriage, instead she focused on what was to come. There were a lot of surprises along the way. The narrator was perfect, though I could have done without the “phone” voices.

Not sure why I didn’t give it a 5 except that it wasn’t as gripping as some of the authors other books. Still great!

Pretty good, but kind of predictable, and the ending felt like the author was just ready to wrap it up, where she could have really expounded upon the characters and the situation a bit more to really create a full story and ending.
