About this audiobook
Louis L'Amour takes William Tell Sackett on a treacherous passage from the Arizona goldfields to the booming town of Los Angeles.
Tell Sackett was no ladies' man, but he could spot trouble easily enough. And Dorinda Robiseau was the kind of trouble he wanted to avoid at any time-even more so when he had thirty pounds of gold in his saddlebags and a long way to travel. But when she begged him for safe passage to Los Angeles, Sackett reluctantly agreed. Now he's on a perilous journey through the most brutal desert on the continent, traveling with a companion he doesn't trust . . . and headed for a confrontation with a deadly gunman who also bears the name of Sackett.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Tell Sackett finds himself "saddled" with a lady-in-distress who might not be either! Enjoyable tale, with lots of action and less contemplation. Recommended, but try to read the earlier books in the Sackett series in order.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Tell Sackett is one of my favorites of the Sacketts, so I was delighted to see him as the lead in this book. The book was full of tiny twists, including adding a new Sackett to the list: Nolan Sackett, a gunfighter for hire. There is a love story -- or is it a betrayal? I'm not going to tell here! Read the book!If you like Westerns, you'll like this one.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The funny thing with Louis L'Amour, is that he writes in such a predictable fashion, you know exactly what is going to happen from page to page. This book is almost no exception.
Knowing that this book is supposed to follow Sackett chronologically, I'm sort of expecting this book to pick up where the last one leaves off. Specifically, with Ange Kelly, the girl William Tell Sackett settles down with. However, he meets a "Dorinda Robiseau" fairly early in the story, takes her across the Mojave Desert, and meets up with her again in later in the book. Never at any point is there any mention of Ange, his former girl. Oh well. I've been told that the books really aren't written as a series, so I shouldn't expect any sort of continuity. So, Dorinda is his new gal.
Then, later in the story Tell gets a letter from Ange that she is going to meet up with him in Prescott, Arizona. Well I'll be dipped! We got us a lover's triangle. This certainly breaks with the formula that Louis sticks with in all the rest of his other novels.
So, at this point, I want him to get his gold back (which I know he will) and meet up with Ange in Prescott. So after he gets his gold, he heads back to the "Old Ben" ranch, gets his mules, grabs Dorinda, and off they go. Except, Dorinda double-crosses him. She knows that Tell knows where Old Ben's gold is, and she wants him to tell him- at gun point.
Huh. Louis writes in a girl that clearly is not going to end up with Tell. So, he'll head back to Arizona, meet up with Ange, and the good guy still gets the girl. Surprisingly enough, I wasn't expecting this.
But then the book just ends. I knew Nolan Sackett with team up with Tell. Saw that coming a hundred miles away. But, after they team up, the book just ends. What happens with Prescott? What happens with Ange? No conclusion. Sort of disappointing, to be honest.
So why am I giving this 4 stars? Because first, he had me guessing on the girl. Is Dorinda a "good guy" or a "bad guy"? It wasn't until the last chapter, that you found out. Then, with writing in Ange Kelly, I sort of expected Tell to make it in to Prescott, get his girl, and live happily every after. That doesn't happen, so it's almost as if Louis is deliberately keeping you on your feet.
Second, the action sequences and story line were just good. The pace really doesn't wear you out. It's a good solid steady beat. Sure, things are a bit unrealistic with him chasing down his gold after being left dead in the Mojave Desert. But, that's the fun of it, is how it will happen (because you know it will). So you judge it based on its creativity, rather than its realism, and it is certainly creative.
Overall, I really liked the book. I thought it was a lot of fun. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5great western novel with fun characters and mystery till the last sentence of the book
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The action. Louis Lamours writings are addictive and never tiring. The description of desert scenes and natural features enliven the picture.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is the first Sackett novel I read. Really satisfying!
