Interesting and even exciting at times, but the narration could easily be strong and the character/writer is a little bit harsh on other women.

Anita is right in the thick of things - investigating weird vampiric murders, training a new animator, figuring out where her loyalties lie. I like her wit and bravado - my only regret about this series is the amount of cursing - it gets in the way of my enjoyment of the story.

I read this novel only once several years ago, but it's still one that stands out in my mind among the Anita Blake novels I've read. (17 and a half, since I gave up on the series mid-way through Flirt, though I thought the series long jumped the shark in the tenth book.) But this is still vintage Anita Blake, back when she was a snarky, tough take no prisoners necromancer and vampire hunter. Back when Jean-Claude was still ruthless and dangerous--and Richard the werewolf represented a chance at normalcy. And with Mr Oliver Anita found herself against one of her most memorable baddies. I still remember the spine-chilling moment when his nature and history was revealed. So, yes, I'd recommend this as a perfect Halloween read. But with the understanding that the series falls into the abyss with Narcissus in Chains. You can't say I didn't warn you.

When I think of scary circus stuff, clowns leap to the front of the list. Of course, there are fanged clowns in the Circus of the Damned. How could there not be? It’s the perfect milieu for Anita Blake, the heroine of Laurell K Hamilton’s “Vampire Hunter” series. Anita is an animator: she raises the undead for a living, which goes to show you, by page one, she’s not a squeamish woman. More about this circus. There are demon acrobats, and fanged clowns, and sinuous snake charmers and giant snakes. And it’s all run by the vampires of St. Louis. It’s also the daytime resting place of Jean-Claude, the new Master of the City, who has marked Anita twice and is, to her enormous displeasure, her vampire Master. Don’t worry readers: she says she’d die first before taking the next two marks. There are several points of tension in the plot. A pack of rogue vampires are trolling the hills making seemingly-random kills. Anita is spending far too much of her time helping out the police, according to her money-hungry boss, and is missing her appointments. He is finally persuaded to hire Larry, a very green animator, to assist Anita until he can learn the trade. Meanwhile, area vampires are threatening Jean-Claude’s position as Master of St. Louis. His first thoughts are to his doubly-marked servant Anita, who must willingly submit to him before his peers in order to solidify his power. The reader learns more about lycanthropy (generic animal shapeshifting) in is book and we meet the last of a race of creatures.Hamilton hasn’t really explored Anita’s lovelife, except to say it’s mostly-nonexistent. Throughout the book, she is busy almost having a date with a brown-eyed handsome man. Life keeps seeming to get in the way so it seems readers will have to wait until the fourth (or later) volume in the series before romance creeps into the protagonist’s life. The book is well-written, like the first two, and Anita becomes more lifelike with each new volume in the series. She’s cynical and unafraid to espouse her dislikes. She’s married to her work and exercises, not because she likes it, but because she will eventually need to outrun the bad guys. The series is popular. I’m supposing the character will develop further as the storyline progresses. It’s what I look for in this sort of novel because, let’s face it: the only thing that scares me more than clowns is a puncture wound. I don’t read the novels because I love vampires. I will keep reading as long as Anita grows.

I am really getting into the Anita Blake stories, and I found Circus of the Damned by Laurell K. Hamilton to be an incredible book. The story seemed to continue on in the standard that I'm beginning to expect from the series. There was very little that I could find at fault with the story. Some of the writing was a little too descriptive for my taste. (I'm probably one of those rare people who doesn't like everything to be completely spelled out for me.) There were also times when it seemed like there were lines added for the purpose of filler. The plot moved along quite well. The bad guys were fairly easy to distinguish from the beginning, but Ms. Hamilton did a good job in building the story around them. The book was definitely enthralling enough to keep me interested in reading more of the series.

I am only 3 books into the Anita Blake series and I have to say I am HOOKED!! So far the action and adventure just keeps getting better and better. Each book becomes a faster page turner than the last. If you enjoyed the Sookie Stackhouse series you will like this one. Great read!!This book is a great one to continue the series and to be introduced to other aspects of Anita Blake and what her job is. This also introduces more characters that complicate things but also make it more interesting You could just picture the Club and how it was decorated and arranged. The characters were also very picturesque and very believable and the romance and sex were very hot and steamy!! Wow had a tough time putting this one down and then at the end was anxious to get onto the next book to her new adventures. Enjoy this one it's great

I loved meeting one of the oldest vampires. Vampires exist that far back in time? The epic battle in the end is full of surprises of all kinds. And there are new creatures to encounter like lamias. One is never bored in this series. I love seeing creatures that were only hinted at in various mythologies coming alive in this book.

This book was exciting as the first two that I have read. In this book, Anita who is Jean Claude's vampire servant was still pressured of the thought because she didn't act like one. as stubborn as she is, she still refuses to be Jean Claude's vampire servant because she doesn't want to be bound forever to him. Anita encounters Mr. Oliver or The Earthmover, who is member of the vampire council that wants to kill Jean Claude to take over St. Louis.Initially Anita tells the old vampire because she was mad with Jean Claude but eventually kills him together with Edward. this is the book where Anita meets Richard, Jean Claude's animal to call (Wolf). This book is worth reading if you haven't though of buying it yet! Anita is the kind of character that you want if you enjoy Angelina Jolie flicks. Tough chick, sarcastic, yet this book includes the love elements that you may want to read in a book, though not the mushy-type of romance. All in all, the Anita Blake series never seems to fail me.

Anita's managed to fend off or ignore the dreams Jean Claude's been sending for a couple of months - long enough to heal and semi-convince herself everything's back to normal. Then a dead body drained and dumped turns up bearing the marks of five different vampires - a rouge master's loose, and Anita has nowhere to turn but Jean Claude. And of course there are complications, including the mouthwateringly lovely man in Jean Claude's bed, Edward, and a truly deadly immortal with a yen Anita's blood.

Anita is under more pressure by Jean-Claude to take the fourth mark, pressure from her boss to take jobs that are out of her job description, and pressure from the Police to help them solve a series of murders. Jean-Claude's shaky Master of the City status draws other powerful vampires who wish to take over. Since Anita is his human servant (against her will and fighting the last of the marks) the challenging master vampires also want to test her. If this weren't enough trouble, Dolph's latest crime scene seems to include a victim of multiple vampire bites. When the victim rises (even though you're not supposed to rise after being bitten by multiple vampires) Anita realized that they have two problems: 1) all of the victims will rise as super strong rabid vamps and 2) they have a master vamp so strong that anyone he bites and drains will turn. It's this vampire, Alejandro, that decides to make Anita his human servant. Anita also meets a really cute guy named Richard who asks her out on a date. She meets a master vampire so old she thinks he might be about a million years old who wants the location of Jean-Claude's daylight resting place. She has to be given Jean-Claude's fourth bite to save her life after being attacked by a lamia and almost drowning. As you can guess, Anita was not very happy about the fourth mark, so she gives up Jean-Claude's daylight resting place to the ancient master vampire, Mr. Oliver. I don't want to say too much more about the plot, just in case you're like me and have never read these book and know nothing about the series. Let's just say that at this point it's very action packed and Anita is eventually freed of both Jean-Claud and Alejandro.Another gritty book, lots of action, a good mystery, and some great interactions. I just really don't like Anita, she's a horrible person. She's angry and unforgiving (like hating her stepmother because she's not the real mother). I'm assuming all of this anger over her mother's death will be explained in future books. But it just gets tiresome that she uses her mother's death as the reason that she needs to be independent and that love isn't real because people leave you. Anita is also constantly referring to "monsters" and how they kill without thought, but her first response is always to kill the problem! She also hates explaining herself to people, but she gets furious if people don't explain themselves to her! When Richard has to take her to Jean-Claude to save her, she jumps to all kinds of ridiculous conclusions instead of JUST LETTING HIM EXPLAIN HIMSELF! Sorry, but at this point I wanted to slap her. I just find her exhausting and the characters around her waaay too forgiving of her behavior. Also, what's her deal with men's nipples? It seems like she's describing them constantly. It could be just Jean-Claud, and maybe it's only once or twice in a book, but it feels very repetitive. Were there things that I did like about the book? The cover of my hardback edition was very cool. I really liked the scene where Anita and the cops are going after the first victim who rose unexpectedly - that was cool and tense.I could have liked this book, but Anita is tiresome and unlikeable. I'm going to read the 4th book because I've already checked it out from the library and I'm participating in the Anita Blake Challenge, but I don't know how much longer I can stick with the series.

The third in Hamilton's "Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter" series. The story was entertaining, although I do find the central character's first-person narrative/internal monologue a bit irritating from time to time - she's not as witty as she thinks she is. But, despite all that, quite an enjoyable vampire murder mystery story.

This was a very action packed book, my favorite so far in the series. Anita has to help train a new animator, help the police find a killer, and help save the city. Some really old vampires are in town trying to take the city from Jean-Claude. Anita meets a very attractive, slightly mysterious science teacher who is some how tied to Jean-Claude. Will Anita become Jean-Claude's human servant? This book is similar to the others in the series, it developed the characters and their relationships more and was a fun read. I would recommend it to others who like the series.

This is the third in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series. I took a break after reading this one because the conclusion to the book felt too much like the end of the second.Recommended only because I'm fairly happy with the fact that the fourth book doesn't feel like the same book over again. If it has a different ending then this book should probably be read in the same way that the fifth Harry Potter book is good only for setting up the events of later books.

**This interview/review format was borrowed from Bookfool. She's great at it and always has the most interesting reviews :)Give us a brief summary (spoiler free): Circus of the Damned brings Anita back and dealing with the possibilities of having to be Jean Claude's human servant. She is also involved in a police investigation where it looks like vampires are attacking people. Trouble is brewing and of course Anita is in the middle of it. What did you like about this book?I liked this book because we were able to see a different side of Anita. She is struggling with her feelings for Jean Claude, trying to date, and working insane hours as always. Before she knows it she is also dealing with multiple master vampires and trying not to be killed. I also liked ending of this book even though I can't share the details with you here for fear of spoilers. Suffice it to say that it came across as more realistic than previous books.Dislikes?Hmm...a dislike for me is that these books can be a bit gory. "Chunks of human flesh" is a bit of a turnoff. I tend to skim through those parts but I do love the action involved in the book. It keeps you on your toes wondering how Anita will manage to survive.Additional thoughts?I know I'm only three deep into this series but this one is my favorite so far. I related more to Anita and I liked seeing that she struggled with her feelings over Jean Claude. Plus, as I've said previously I liked the ending of this one. I'm anxious to see what troubles Anita gets herself into next. And I almost forgot that I enjoyed the character of the new zombie animator that was introduced. Although I've already forgotten his name ;) All in all, a good read and I will be continuing on with this series.

The first of this series that I enjoyed enough to buy. Anita's relationship with Jean-Claude is getting more complex, and causing her to begin to re-evaluate long held beliefs. Richard is introduced, and capture's Anita's interest almost immediately, though one wonder's why she didn't immediately realize he must be supernatural if he keeps showing up wherever Jean-Claude is??I felt the weakest point of this book was it's ending...which was anti-climactic and far too easy a death for a million year old vampire. All in all, though, a very enjoyable story.

Not the best in the series, but it's still a great read (and reread). In this novel, Anita meets a new man that she really gets on with, trains a new animator, and has to deal with the presence of a new vampire in town as well as her dislike over how close she's being bound to Jean-Claude.
