About this audiobook

Josh Michaels isn’t wanted dead or alive—just dead. That fact becomes shockingly clear when a stranger runs his car off the road. Instead of a helping hand, the man gives Josh a “thumbs down” and abandons him to what is almost certainly a watery grave. Luckily, Josh cheats death…this time. But when more harrowing “accidents” threaten his life, it’s clear he’s a marked man.

Are his past mistakes coming back to bite him? Or is something more sinister afoot? And how can he convince his family, friends, and especially the cops that he’s in danger? The harder Josh fights to stay alive, the more determined his unknown enemy is to see him dead. And the deeper he digs for answers, the more chilling the truth becomes. As his time and luck rapidly run out, he must unmask an insidious conspiracy bent on making a killing—in more ways than one.

Nerve-jangling noir doesn’t get much blacker than Simon Wood’s top speed trip into cold-blooded murder and hot-blooded vengeance.

I have tried to read this three different times, I just can't get into it. It's too bad because I have liked others by Simon Wood and it sounded like a great story.

This was so pathetically amateurish I would have sworn it was self-published. The main character is such a tool: he takes a bribe, he cheats on his wife, he accidentally kills an old lady, and he tracks HIV positive blood over most of northern California. The hitman trying to kill him is so incredibly dumb. The point of a hitman is to efficiently and quietly kill someone; you don't menace them for weeks like Robert Mitchum in "Cape Fear," revealing yourself to all and sundry. And just to take the stupidity up a notch the author relies on that shopworn cliche of catching the bad guy on tape.

It's the kind of book I probably only paid $1-$2 for and still want my money back.

    That is all.

This was one of those very inexpensive buys on Amazon and I am not even now very sure who recommended it to me. Although the author is a "transplanted Brit", it is a very American novel, set in a world where making money however you can is important.Dexter Tyrrell, Vice President of Pinnacle Investments, has come up with one such scheme, but various factors have reduced its profitability recently, and so Tyrell has introduced another factor, designed to ensure profits go up again. But sometimes human factors, like Josh Michaels. destroy the best laid plans.Sufficiently intrigued? Another clue- Josh Michaels, strapped for cash, a few years earlier, cashed in his life insurance policy, for a fraction of what it was worth. Or at least that's what he thought he had done. His best friend Bob is his insurance agent, and Bob, on Josh's behalf, made a viatical settlement.Married now for a number of years, Josh has not always been squeaky clean in either his business or sexual life, and now these elements are coming back to bite him, adding to the complexity of the plot. This is a thriller with many interesting elements.

This is another example of a book that could have used a better editor. In an effort to keep the reader guessing and on the edge of their seat, the story becomes much too complicated, past the point of believability. I might give the author another chance, to see if he honed his skills to a keener edge. Some promise here.
