      Omg this book was so bleeping fantastic!!! Its funny, romantic, paranormal, three combinations that I practically live for.Summary:Evie has a gift. Because of her gift she's been living/imprisoned in an underground facility, the Center of IPCA. She can see through glamours, facades that paranormals (ex. werewolves, vamps, faeries, trolls, etc.) put up to blend in and not look quite so freakish. IPCA sends her on missions to capture these paranormals. Their purpose is supposedly to protect humans, so when she zaps, tags, and turns in her targets, she believes that they are given jobs, rights, a better life. Then one day a strange creature breaks into the Center, wearing the face of one of the head manager people, Raquel, while punching a few people in the process. So Evie does her usual: zap, tag, turn in. But IPCA still has no idea what he is. As she spends more time with him, mass murders begin to break out, killing hundreds of paranormals. All the while a creepy poem haunts her and Lend, the shape-shifter boy, as they begin to believe that somehow she has something to do with the killings.

      I really want to give this book more than a two star rating because, as the two star description states, "it was alright"; but I couldn't do it - it just didn't hook me, you know? I just felt that any potential the paranormal story line held was ruined by the pointless dribble about Evie and her annoying love life and amazing high school lockers (read the book and you'll understand my frustration).

      I'll start with the things I didn't like with this novel. Firstly, Evie. Gah, she was just so whiny and annoying. I know, she was a sixteen year old stuck in an underground, government facility, but she just didn't agree with me. Everything was a problem, life was out to get her, she loves someone she's just met, she couldn’t use a knife because it wasn’t pink, she missed Easton Heights TV show or whatever the hell it was called, yada yada yada... I know this book is a YA novel, so I expected some teenage spiel about feelings/pointless rubbish, but if I had to listen to "I think he likes me" or "I just held his hand for the nine thousandth time" one more time, I would have probably clawed my eyes out or thrown my kindle across the room.
      Ahhh, I really liked the underlying idea behind this novel, the story line had potential but it was just drowned out by nonsense like “Ah, programme is on!!!”- it was so frustrating!

      *Breathes*

      Right, oh did I mention Lend? - point case number two on my hate list. Am I only the person who didn’t fall for his flat, boring character? Ughh, his artistic skills (cliché, I swear every story has an artistic supernatural male; ‘cause all the girls for mysterious artistic types right?) and his typical shallow male comments like “you look hot” make me want to stab him. Or suck out his soul - whatever, just get rid of him.
      I didn’t believe their “love”; maybe on the basis that Evie is a sixteen year old girl, who may or may not have been in a relationship with a psycho faery. I don’t know, I was told Reth and Evie were together but apparently they never touched or did anything relationship wise, which makes me think she’s like one of those adolescent girls who convinces herself she’s in a relationship with a boy because he said her hair looked nice? I don’t know, it just seemed like their relationship was made up in her head. This then makes me think that the whole “I heart Lend” thing is utter rubbish. She, again, sounds like an adolescent girl who is in love after two days of being with someone. *Sighs*

      Oh, that reminds me, how can I forget the constant sighing? *Sarcastic-rolls-my-eyes-whilst-shaking-my-head sigh*

      Reth, Reth, Reth. You could have been such a good character, I really liked you to begin with and then you transformed into this weird kidnapper/stalker character who tried to put your warmth into Evie at every opportunity (weird, just plain weird) and it demolished any faith I had in you, or your side of the story. It just ended. Right there.

      It pretty much sounds like I hated this book right? Wrong, surprising I actually enjoyed some parts, however, they were seriously out shadowed by the pointless teenage drivel .
      I actually liked the fact that Kiersten White included different types of paranormal being. She had the A typical vampires, werewolves, ghosts and faery characters, but she then had mermaids, gremlins, shape-shifters, water nymphs - I mean you had a brilliant chance to make this book amazing but it just kinda fell flat. I have never read a book with such a variation of characters and I just felt the opportunity was wasted.
      You could also say, I really liked the idea of Evie thinking she was human, but in actual fact wasn’t. She was something more and I loved how she realised that all that trust in the IPCA was a cover up really - they were essentially using her but were petrified of her ability. Ah yes, her ability. I loved this concept. I’ve not read a book like this that incorporates a special ability like this. It’s unique, but it’s a shame it was overshadowed by the other rubbish in the book.

      I won’t drone on, there are a million things I didn’t like or didn’t agree with in this book. Like I said before, I felt it really did have the potential to be brilliant, it had the element of Evie’s ability and the combination of all of the unexplored paranormal creatures but it just didn’t work.

      I’d also like the state that, if a sixteen year old girl wore a zebra print wrap dress and neon pink stiletto boots outside the house, she would be labelled something more sinister than “hot” and she would be attracting a different male age group entirely *sigh*.

      This book is a must read! I have multiple favorite things about this book. Evie's voice is original and authentic. The story itself simply is enthralling. It is a mystery wrapped in a romance covered in action. The main character is smart and charming. The other characters all add their own extra awesome to the book. I probably should stop gushing now.Good thing the next in the trilogy is only a couple months away. Go get this book right now.

      Oh bleep! Paranormalcy was such a cute, flirty, and funny read. When I first saw the cover, it drew me in. Look at it and tell me it’s not gorgeous! And that dress! I want that dress! Not only that, but the synopsis was so different too. I did wonder about how good this book was going to be. It was an original idea, yes, but how would Kiersten White apply it? Well, I’m happy to say that after reading this book in one day, I have not doubts: Keirsten White’s debut novel Paranormalcy is a treat and a must read!The idea of the IPCA (International Paranormal Containment Agency) was original itself. I’d never heard of such a thing until now. I was glad when White told us about the IPCA but she didn’t bore us with a zillion useless details and information. She made learning about the IPCA fun and interesting.The entire plot for this book was well throughout and well written. White obviously took the time to come up with all of these characters, and traits, and surprises, and everything else. I felt that the plot flowed really well: it was calm when I expected it to be; it was fast paced when it should have been fast paced.Evie was a great protagonist. I loved reading from her point of view. She’s such a sweet, cute girl with a fierce side. Sure she’s silly and funny and niave and worries about how she looks and loves her soaps, but honestly, that is what made her so awesome. Only Evie could have on such cute (read about it in the book!) book and be able to hunt down monsters with Tasey! She was a lot like teenagers and I was about to connect with her. Evie was also not afraid of grownups and she knew what she wanted. Though she’s the only one who can see through the glamors of all the creatures, she’s just so…herself. She knows who she is and is quiet happy about it. I loved that about her. Evie made me laugh when she made her comebacks and her remarks.Lately, I’m getting tired of the love triangles. I love them, yes, but sometimes, it’s too much. Low and behold, there was no love triangle in this book! There was no love-at-first-sight in this book. There was just this great, sweet guy named Lend (who just happens to have broken in to the IPCA) and the friendship that came between him and Evie. As said in the synopsis, something is killing off the paranormals and as Evie and Lend come together to find out what it is, they become friends. Soon, though, their friendship turns into something more. Their relationship was so realistic! They didn’t fall for each other at first sight! They were interested as to Lend’s ability and what Evie could do. The natural flow of conversation between them was believable. Their relationship progressed at a great pace!Paranormalcy was a cute, witty, funny, great, awesome book that you have to read. Not only was it all those things mentioned above, there was mystery and surprises and twists and turns and some parts were scary. There were honestly no parts of this book that I didn’t like. Unlike many other books in a series, Paranormalcy didn’t leave with a huge cliffhanger. Sure there were plenty of unanswered questions but the ending was fitting. Paranormalcy left me satisfied and I can’t wait for book two, Supernaturally coming Fall of 2011!

      Evie isn't normal. She has no family and lives in a government facility. Her best friend is a mermaid who lives in a big fish tank and has to speak using a machine like Stephen Hawking. She works for a company that gathers up supernatural creatures like vampires or werewolves; her job is to find and tag them so that they're "neutered," or no longer able to harm anyone. She is starved for teenage interaction and obsesses over a television show akin to 90210. Evie is a kind person who only wants to be good. And don't forget, normal.At first, I wasn't sure what to think of Evie. Sometimes worldly but more often naive, she jumps when her "boss" and surrogate mother, Raquel, says how high. She has to occasionally fend off her faerie ex, Reth, stalker that he is, and this makes her seem, well, normal. But then she wanders around IPCA's facility, blithely going along, not questioning anything. This is basically her life until she catches an intruder, a shape-shifter boy named Lend, who is breaking into Raquel's office. He and Evie hit it off right from the start even though the IPCA has him in a cell and wants to know what his agenda is. Lend helps Evie open her eyes to what her life is like and moreover, to herself. Is she human or not? Why is she always so cold and what is she to IPCA - an employee or an inmate? By the end of Paranormalcy, I had a much better sense of Evie and so did she.Paranormalcy is a nifty little YA novel. It took me only a few hours to read it (just finished this evening, actually) but it kept my eyes riveted to its pages throughout. I could have lived without some of the more stereotypical teenage stuff like the prom but with a heroine who aches to be a typical teenager, what else could I have asked for? With an interesting (if not a bit predictable) plot and a likable heroine, Paranormalcy is a good addition to the YA genre.The next chapter in Kiersten White's trilogy, Supernaturally, will be released in Fall 2011.

      I can't say I thought the book was [bleeping] awesome, as some reviews I read before thought, but it was a really fun read. This book has more creativity in its creatures than I've read before. I liked how Lend was drawn, his mom too. The tone is light and fun, similar to City of Bones by Cassandra Clare.

      I received this as a Goodreads First Read.While not at all a deep book, it was a quick and enjoyable read. The main character really felt like a teenage girl, and not just an overly obnoxious adult- which is a problem that often occurs in YA lit.I enjoyed the take on paranormal creatures in the world, and since I'm a sucker for fae that are sly, sneaky, and who can get around any bargain they make by sticking to the exact words said, I did have a good time with that.Although, for a girl who grew up around them, she certainly had no idea how to talk to fairies. I literally winced at several things she said- but then again, I read too much...

      I loved every minute of this. "Paranormalcy" is so different from the other paranormal teen fiction out there. I loved Evie's personality, and how strong and down-to-earth she was - in spite of being a little obsessed with pop culture and normal teenage life. But if you were abandoned at the age of 3, became a ward of the state and bounced around the foster care system until ultimately be given a job with International Paranormal Containment Agency at the age of 8 due to your ability to see through glamours - you would probably rely on television dramas and daydreams of high school lockers to help you cope, too. I also loved watching the love story unfold here. This isn't the undying/obsessed/star-crossed love here. Evie has an honest-to-goodness crush, and she doesn't suffer from the "meant-to-be" syndrome. Evie experiences self-doubt and really cute moments when all she yearns for is a hand to hold. She gradually moves from "I might like him" to "I think I'm in love" all while always wanting to take it slow. So different from other YA novels out there! It was enjoyable and relatable. Enough of the gooey, love stuff. I enjoyed the plot immensely, but felt that the second act didn't quite live up to the first. I enjoyed the secondary characters, and the different way of looking at vampires, werewolves, fairies, mermaids, etc. (And there was a lot of etcetera!) Of course there's going to be a sequel. But this story still had a tied up ending, as well as leaving questions still to be answered and lots of room for more stories to be told. And that, my friends, is just how I like my escapist teen fiction novels.

      Evie works for International Paranormal Containment Agency or IPCA. Because of her ability to see beyond the glamours of paranormals, her job is to find, identify, and tag them. Even though she is only 15, she has been at this for several years under the tutelage of Raquel who is also human. Evie longs to be a normal teenager, but she does not want to go back into the foster system where Raquel found her. She has a decent life here and even has a best friend named Lish who is a mermaid, but as more and more paranormals turn up dead, Evie finds herself in seclusion and the cold and loneliness she has always felt becomes more pronounced. When Lend, who is different from other paranormals, is captured and imprisoned at IPCA, Evie finds out that she may not be as human as she thinks. Evie can't seem to stay away from Lend who can make himself look like anyone. Raquel thinks he may be behind the paranormal deaths, but Evie believes he may hold the answer to their problem.
      Paranormalcy is an interesting take on the human/paranormal romance, bringing together several different kinds of paranormal beings and giving them a place in modern society. There are lots of explanations in the building of this world, but overall, this is a unique story with a mild but enjoyable twist.

      Paranormalcy(Paranormalcy #1)by Kiersten WhiteYoung adult books are not my favorite books but occasionally I find some true gems and this is one of them. I find that most YA books I try are like chewing bubble gum when I am really craving a seven course meal, they just aren't filling, lack flavor and nutrition! But this book had great characters, very unique and well developed characters that YA and adults alike would like. Good plot, good banter and language that fit the teen language, original fantasy which is difficult in any age group, and I was never bored. Yes, I could tell it was still a YA but yeah, that's what it was made for! Clean, which suites me just fine, and I would be willing to follow this series! All adds up to a good read! A splash of romance for those that enjoy that stuff, and boom!A pretty darn good YA fantasy novel!

      I found the book lacking any real plot. I had a hard time staying focused on the book and couldn't really follow along. The story was all about a girl and how her life was. I wasn't too thrilled with "Evie" throughout most of the book and wish that she could have been a little more, adult, about things. She was the perfect whiny teen and got on my nerves a lot. Once the book was finished I was happy to see everything resolved and will grudgingly start the second book in the series, just to make sure I know what happens, because no matter what, I always finish a series once I start it.

      I love to read YA and PNR books. So its was pretty natural that I ended up picking up this book. Well having read a good bit of these books Paranormalcy is different. While most YA paranormal books are about vampires or werewolves this one has it all. And some lesser seen paranormal entities like water spirits, and hybrids.

      I enjoyed the book enough to read it in one day while I know its not long that doesn't happen often. I felt like Evie was a little different than most the heroines in this genre. Of course she was a slight mary sue, but it seems almost inescapable these days. Her mary sue traits aren't as noticeable as in other books fitting this genre. I really enjoyed the character Lend throughout the series along with Reth. I also enjoyed hearing more about other types of paranormals throughout the book. I really hope the second one includes more of them.

      Besides Evie's horrid fashion sense for the most part the book was really good. I enjoyed it and can't wait to pick up the next one. I think if your into this type of book its a great read and well worth your time. If paranormal YA books aren't you thing then I wouldn't pick it up.

      Evie's been living at the International Paranormal Containment Agency (IPCA) facility since she was eight. She can see through glamours and that makes her valuable to the IPCA, an agency that captures "paranormals." She's great at her job but really bad at what she considers "normal" teenaged life--she gets all her information about that lifestyle from a tv show that she watches with her best friend, a paranormal living in the IPCA.

      I like Evie, I like how she's childlike--because in many ways she's been kept that way--and I like how she tries to make her work into something pretty and sparkly like she sees on her tv show. And I really like how brave she is in stepping out into a new world.

      This book came out when I was about DONE with reading paranormal and thirsty for more contemporary novels. However, I got to meet the author at an event this past weekend. She did a reading from the sequel Supernaturally, and I was intrigued. When she talked about what the book was about, I was even more intrigued. This wasn't your typical paranormal.

      I figured if the book was at least as entertaining as Kiersten, then I'd enjoy it. I was right.

      I LOVED it. Evie is a great character--kick butt and funny. And Lend. Oh Lend. I LOVE that it's a book set in a paranormal world with a girl who just wants to be normal. She gets excited over the funniest things. And it was a page-turner for sure.

      So, not much of a book review per se, but I'm looking forward to picking up Supernaturally and giving it a go.

      Evelyn was abandoned at birth and was shuffled through the foster system until she ran into an agency that keeps paranormals off the street. Now, using her unique gift for seeing past glamours, she works for the agency to keep humans safe.

      If I said, “I love Paranormalcy” and left it that way, would that be enough? Maybe, but I have to count the ways.

      Evie is a great protagonist. Her voice is spunky and her feelings for the people in her life spills out through the pages. She’s not the typical tough girl hero and her quest to live a normal life - or as normal as she imagines - is very endearing.

      The story unfolds rather quickly as Evie tries to learn about who she is, between the detaining of Vampires and Werewolves and the fighting to stay alive. There was a little lag as the romance aspect was being built, but the story itself was still there, keeping me interested enough to turn the pages until I found out what was going on. I’m looking forward to the continuation of the story in Supernaturally.

      I have vague memories that people really loved this when it came out. I might be wrong though… Wouldn’t be a bad thing this time…

      The biggest problem for me was Evie. She was way too naïve and childish. And liked pink more that is healthy in my opinion… She was found as a small child and grew up in IPCA - organisation that monitors all things paranormal – and yet seems totally clueless what IPCA does or about her own past.

      She falls in love with Lend, paranormal who was captured by IPCA. Apart from being practically the only teenage boy she’s met, I don’t see what Evie saw in him. I just thought he was boring.

      The most interesting thing was the fairies. They weren’t as “controlled” as everyone seemed to think. Evie’s ex Reth came at first a bit stalkerish but he turned out to be the most interesting pearson in the book. First you think he’s good, then he seems bad, then good.. And he seemed dangerous. Like he could have killed everyone. Or maybe that’s just me hoping.

      This was quick and easy read and I can safely say that I won’t continue this trilogy.

      An enjoyable story, but nothing special. Evelyn isn't a bad main character, and I kind of like that she's a ditzy teenage girl. Gives me some big Buffy vibes. But it just made me want to watch Buffy, not read more.But anyway. It's an interesting story, and not entirely stereotypical. I'm still curious as to what Evie actually is; I'm not sure they ever explicitly said. I really don't want her to be a brand new made-up creature. It'd be so much cooler if she was something from mythology or fairy tales.Evie and Lend are cute, though it's awfully convenient she falls in love with the very first teenage boy she ever meets. I'm kind of expecting their love to go sour because of this, but I don't think I'd complain if it didn't. Like I said, they're pretty cute.Overall, not a terrible YA urban fantasy romance. It's fun and not too serious; perfect for a good escape.

      Evie is a teenager who works for IPCA, the International Paranormal Containment Agency. This agency catalogues and keeps track of paranormals (vampires, werewolves, faeries...). She has an advantage over the other workers as she can see through glamours.

      Her life changes when she meets Lend, a shape-shifter, and finds out she is related to a mysterious creature that is killing paranormals.

      I had read so many good reviews about Paranormalcy, that I had to check it out. I wasn’t disappointed and I would recommend it to all the people who like this genre.

      One of the reasons why I liked this book so much is the main character. Evie fights against vampires and werewolves, but she is a normal teenage girl who likes to go shopping and watch tv series and who forgets to do her homework. She is not a perfect super-heroine, but a girl that could be in any high school class.

      We see the events through Evie’s eyes and at first she doesn’t know much more than the reader. Evie thinks that she is just one more normal person in the IPCA and that she has just an advantage over the other workers. Her surprise and questions are understandable when she finds out that she is not just one more worker but a paranormal of a very high level. She starts to question her whole life and her relationship with IPCA and the chief, Raquel, who has been like a mother to her.

      Evie’s view of the world changes drastically when she meets Lend’s family. Their view of paranormals is completely different from the one of IPCA. Most paranormals are just as normal as any human when given a chance. They have feelings and can love, feel sad and enjoy tv series. Like everybody. They are not a threat to humans.

      Paranormalcy is a great story that shows that people, no matter how different, are just people.

      I have been looking forward to this book since finding Ms. White on Twitter and Facebook. Evie is as delightful a character as her author is. I savored this book on my recent vacation and eagerly look forward to many more books from Ms. White. Wonderful dialogue, intriguing characters and quick pacing held my attention from the first sentence.

      Great teen read, with a spunky female Evie, who is still a sweet, in some ways, naive 16 yr old. Mixes up realistic teen romance with fantasy: a very human world but with mythological beings mixed in: werewolves, trolls, vampires, etc. disguised as humans. Our protagonist Evie can see through their human disguise "their glamours" and see the true entity, thus her value to the International Paranormal Containment Agency, ICPA. From Wikiwand: "Evie's allies include a shape-shifting boy named Lend, who she meets as the story begins, and a faerie named Reth, whom she previously admired. Both young men become romantic interests of Evie's as the tale progresses, while the three of them are joined by other companions as well. At its center, Paranormalcy examines Evie's attempts to balance her IPCA duties with her growing desire to lead a normal teenage life" ("Paranormalcy" accessed 22 Nov 2015). Evie's voice throughout the entire novel is the best: irreverent, sassy, by turns wistful and lonely, upbeat and exuberant- we root for her all the way through the twists and turns of the story. Followed by two more books in the series. Definitely recommended to fans of other dark fantasy fiction, vampire stories, with a bit of teen pop culture and more upbeat funny tone.

      I loved this book. Loved loved loved it. Not only were the characters fully rounded and incredibly engaging (even the "bad guys", I love that!), but the main character, Evie, goes through several upsets during the book changing her entire life and the way she views the world.

      While there are your stock paranormals kept at the Center, White also invents a couple as she goes along (including the two main characters), which I found very well-done and enriching. While it may be said that the paranormals the Center pursues are "underpowered", in the context of the book it made a lot of sense - if they were invincible and there were that many creatures all around us all the time, human population would have died out long before the IPCA or the APCA could have been started to contain them. The moral and ethical implications of containment and "neutering" the PNs are also beginning to be explored towards the end, which I found added an unforeseen level of depth to an already exciting and fresh plot.

      Speaking of plot, this book's was perfectly paced, leaving you to wonder at the right moments and offering (some) explanations only when you need them.

      Paranormalcy was, in my book, almost perfect. It was great fun to read, you really come to care about all of the characters and the story was engaging and original. I had to wrack my brain to come up with something I didn't like, and the only thing I could get was that Evie named her taser gun. Tasey. Yah.

      RECOMMENDED FOR: Any fans of spec-fic or YA, and anyone whose soul sometimes craves for just fun and something non-angsty. This book is pretty light and fluffy, so there are no age constraints or worries and is just a general feel-good book. I guess if you think the light side of life and people having fun while in danger is all unicorns and rainbows and stupid, you might want to first lend it from the library or a friend.
