Very strong heroine in this one! Loved that she ended up saving the day in the end.

Wondering what sort of paranormal creature Archer was about drove me crazy.

I barely managed to finish this book. It was just so... boring to me.
I usually love historical romance and paranormal romance books. And I read some that mix this two genres and I loved them. But this book just left me cold. Even an added mystery and murders could not keep me interested.
I will not be continuing this series any time soon.

love this book. love Archer. I went into it with no idea what the paranormal elements were, and that made it so much more fun. This book was different from anything I've read. This is the kind of story I long for and rarely find.

I fell in love with the lovebirds' story and here I thought that the historical romance genre is dead, KCallihan might just revive it singlehandedly with this series. I also love the myth she employed as well as picking Beauty and the Beast as the base for her story. Like I previously mentioned, the supernatural elements are not as prominent as my usual reads but I hardly noticed it. This is more like a love story and Miri and Archer's special powers just added fiery color to the background. Callihan focused on the attraction and their love-hate relationship than their powers which worked well for me.I just found it hard to follow some of the events because it would shift from one scene to another without breaks or much preamble. I'm not sure if this has been corrected in the final book because the one I have is an ARC but I'm hoping that it has been rectified.

While there were parts of this I really enjoyed the author kinda lost me about half way through. I think she dragged out the unveiling a little too long and spelled out some of the details a little too much. It was an ok read. 3 and a half stars.

Might come back to this at some point, if I'm in that sort of dutiful, self-flagellating mood, but at the moment I want this off my currently reading shelf. I found the writing awkward and the plotting terribly cliched.

3.5 because I can't quite bring myself to rate it a 4, but it's quite good, I liked it. It was entertaining, though I'll say at the beginning it was pretty clear Callihan didn't slip into the language of the day very easily. It got better as it went on, or I got used to it. I prefer to think it was the former. I dunno, I was pretty annoyed with Miranda in the beginning, I got to like her better later on, but it was kind of annoying the way everyone bowed to her beauty and the like, which was also true of Victoria, and writing women that way is annoying, like how pretty they are is their only notable feature. It worked for Victoria because that was really the only positive thing she had going for her. But Miranda? She has a really good personality that could of spilled onto her features, there was no need for the constant worshiping of her appearance (that was never fully described other than the fact she's ginger, and slim, with a generous bosom yet is somehow able to pass for a guy on several occasions). You can say she's beautiful a few times and we get it.The plotline was sufficiently amusing and some good action scenes. Callihan writes romance and sex scenes exceptionally well, which I found myself preferring over the "action" scenes which I think could have used a bit of work. There were a few scenes that sort of dragged, but they were necessary to the plot and I trudged through them after taking a break. But like I said--the gem here really is the scenes between Archer and Miranda. The rest is really secondary. If you're looking for gothic fiction though, note this will be disappointing. It really doesn't have the same atmosphere that I expect from gothic fiction.

DNFGot about 2/3 of the way through (with the help of frequent skimming) before I realized all the tension this book provoked in me was due to annoyance rather than interest. The characters were shallow and the insta-lust/insta-love baffled me. The phrasing is frequently awkward or downright nonsensical. The plotting was fine, but the pacing seemed rushed given the Gothic tone the author seemed to be aiming for. Overall, it gave me the feeling of Michael Bay trying to do historical romance with vague paranormal elements. Not to my taste.

Firelight is one of the few historical romances I can honestly say I enjoyed. It wasn't just soft, sweet romance, but thrilling action and mystery. Miranda and Lord Archer were wonderful MCs and I couldn't get enough of them.Miranda was soft at heart, but she could be just as scary as 'The Dread Lord Archer'. I truly admired this character for not paying attention to the rumors of society and letting her heart guide her when it came to Archer. Women who can stay strong in times of despair are ones to make a story even more enjoyable.Archer was shrouded in mystery throughout the whole story, but it was easy to see he wasn't the evil brute everyone thought him to be. Even though he kept his physical appearance hidden to Miranda he was still true to himself, for the most part. I loved Archer for his honor.Kristen Callihan has definitely written a most delightful story that will stay with me for a long while and I'll be sticking around for Darkest London, Book 2!

Miranda has a gift. A strange, yet powerful gift -more like a curse -that she's spent a lifetime trying to control. It seems to matter little when he entire family's fortune is completely destroyed and she's forced to marry to save herself from financial ruin. She falls into the arms of the strange Lord Archer, who hides his dark secrets behind a masks. When Archer is accused of murdering innocents, Miranda must dive deeper into her strange abilities to protect Archer and free him from a horrible curse. At its core, Firelight is a gothic retelling of the classic Beauty and the Beast, set in 1880s London with a paranormal element thrown in, a deeper mystery element and some seriously steamy scenes that would never make it into a Disney movie. The result is an action-packed paranormal mystery packed with great characters and a compelling mystery that pulls readers in and leaves them wanting more. Without a doubt, Firelight is one of the most compelling and well-written gothic romances I've ever read (okay, I read read very many, but this still says something). I found myself just completely immersed in Kristen Callihan's writing, hanging onto every word. Every word, every sentence was woven together so well that it was almost lyrical, and the raw beauty in much of this just amazed me. It's hard to believe that Callihan is a debut author with such an advanced and deep writing style. This serves particularly well in some of the steamy segments, as they come across as romantic and poetic, rather than trashy.Would I read the next book? Absolutely, it's slated for release in July and titled Moonglow. Would I recommend Firelight to others? Sure. If you like paranormal mysteries, gothic romances, or historical romances -and aren't afraid of a little steamy romance -Firelight is a great book for you. Perfect for an airplane book, a beach read, or just an escape from the ordinary.

This is a dark, almost gothic novel (though it's set in the late 1800s). I really enjoyed the strength of both main characters, as well as the premise of the story.

I didn't like how many secrets they kept, however. This is a personal pet peeve. I want the main characters to spend the novel working together toward the same goal, not working against each other trying to hide things or keep secrets. Though I understood the reasons they were reluctant to share, I became frustrated because they continually got angry at the other for not sharing, when each of them were guilty of hiding something.

All-in-all, I really enjoyed it and look forward to continuing the series. I only wish they had opened up sooner (plus, I hate being kept in the dark).

A 3.5 really. I was in the mood for a paranormal romance & so I decided to begin this series. I liked it. I didn't love it & I'm not exactly sure why. The characters were well done & the story was well written but something just did not rivet me. Possibly it was that I kept wanting to know more about why Miranda had her power & where it came from. That was huge for me & it's never much addressed. She has it & always has & that's it. M'mkay. And then there's Benjamin (Archer). By the time it's revealed what exactly he is, I honestly didn't care as much. It was a long time coming for that one. I suppose he's the more important between he & Miranda so that's why this all revolves around him. I don't know. I did like all of the murderous mystery tied into that quite a lot. I think I was so preoccupied with that that I didn't get swept away by the romance (though it was well done & they had good banter & conversations between them that made it work). I'll continue the series because I'm interested in the world the author's given.

Not sure where I first saw this but after several years I've finally got a chance to read this (and I'm looking forward to the sequel). Miranda Ellis is plagued by fire, it cost her father his warehouse and she feels a lot of guilt for it. One day her father tells her that he's improved his fortune by agreeing to her marriage to Lord Benjamin Archer, who is a mysterious man who wears a mask all the time. She agrees, under some duress, but when she meets her husband she feels an attraction she can't explain. As the relationship progresses they discover more about each other while someone, is killing Lord Archer's friends, Lord Archer is a prime suspect but the tangled web of magic and murder will be a challenge to them both to unravel.I enjoyed the read, I did want to learn more about Miranda and about the world they live in.

This book got just about everything right! The whole story was woven wonderfully into a sizzling hot romance and a great read. Part paranormal romance, part historical and lots of action, mystery, and suspense! To top it all of it even has a stunning cover! What didn't this book have? How about not a dull moment.

Daisy is a great character, bold in a time when women were supposed to be timid. She says what is on her mind and I liked that about her. She is just coming out of mourning for her husband, who really mistreated and abused her (and left her penniless), and wants to start living her life on her own terms.

When Daisy is attacked, Ian Ranulf rescues her and takes it upon himself to keep her safe. Ian has spent the last few decades running from his past and denying who and what he is. Both characters seemed so lonely in their own ways, that I really wanted everything to work out for them, and the attraction between them is apparent from the very beginning. I loved reading through and watching the sparks fly!

The story was fast paced, and kept me wondering what was going to happen next, with just the right amount of mystery & suspense. There were a couple of times in the book where something would happen that I just didn't see coming at all, and I always love it when a book can surprise me!

I didn't read the first book in this series before starting this one, and I didn't have any trouble keeping up. I always recommend reading books in order, but this one does well as a stand-alone. I enjoyed this books so much, I didn't want to put it down, and don't be surprised if you see a review up soon of book #1, Firelight. Anyways, I loved it and can't wait to read more from this author!

This book thrilled me like none other since I first discovered Anne Rice ten years ago. Archer is the love child of Anne Rice's Lestat and Phantom of the Opera's Eric, surrounded by mystery and charm. The author guides us through the thoughts and anguish of lovers divided by hidden secrets, yet so in love that they risk everything for one another.Although Miranda and Archer are attracted to one another upon the first meeting, they are so hesitant to act on their feelings that I found myself yelling at the characters for taking so long to hook up.The romance blossoms steadily, perhaps a bit too slow, but the plot line propels at a constant speed. Archer is framed for a series of murders, and though he proclaim he is innocence of the crimes to Miranda, he refuses to explain anything to her. So, she must discover the truth behind his connection on her own and with the help of some shady characters.I honestly was surprise when I discovered who the murderer was, and then smacked my head for missing all the clues.

I will have to say I was thoroughly shocked. I am one that has never been a fan of books that date back so far. For this one starting in 1881 - I must say I was quite impressed with not only the way it was written, but the story line itself. This book has everything. A leading man who hides his disfigurements with a mask. A leading woman with a tongue about as sharp as mine. And the family dynamic. I WISH I had sisters as crazy as that! :)Most of the time when someone hears the words "forced to marry," you pretty much know it's not going to end well. Miranda and Archer's story is somewhat different from that. Archer and Miranda met 3 years before this story begins.. Although Archer seems to be the only one who remembers this encounter. He ask her father for her hand in marriage and this is where the story picks up.You have Archer, a man full of many secrets, who is fighting against everything to find a cure to fix his disfigurement, all while trying to figure out who is killing off all these people and framing him as the suspect! Then you have Miranda, who is struggling with her own abilities, falls for the man behind the masks and stands by him through everything that is to come. The dynamic between the two of them is so amazing that I didn't want the story to end! Between fighting their affections for each other, figuring out who is behind this secret society and the murders taking place, to just simply living, this book covers everything. Emotion and emotion just pours out of the pages and you feel yourself connecting with the subjects of the story! I believe there is something in this book for everyone! :)

despite my misgivings I picked this one up today. it has been sitting on my shelf for months because I couldn't get into it. today I could, whether because I have no more books to read, or am just in the right frame of mind. who knows,
this one is a supernatural romance set in victorian england. though the setting didn't have all that much to do with most of the story. a crutial part was vital, but that's a spoiler, so you'll have to wait. it wasn't a traditional victorian with balls and dresses and such, but rather wolves and lycans, and, Ghosts in the Machine. made me blink a bit since I've seen the anime let me tell you.
daisy is out of official mourning for her unlamented husband when a sting of murders crosses london. and all the victims wear the same scent as she does.
ian discovers the connection and vows to protect daisy, even if she doesn't want it.

This is the first romance novel that I've read and I came into it with some preconceptions. Frankly, Kristen Callihan blew those away with this book. It's very well written with believable characters (if you believe in werewolves and elementals, that is) that interact in emotionally genuine ways. I am impressed with both the book and the author. It's not quite a 5-star novel but it's close. This is the second book in a 3 book series. I've not read the first book but I didn't find that a hindrence at all. Callihan quite ably works enough information about the backstory into Moonglow so that the reader knows what's going on without boring readers familiar with the first book. This book starts off with a bang when Daisy witnesses a murder committed by a were and then narrowly misses being killed herself. Daisy is soon rescued by the exiled Lord of the lycans which starts an on-and-off romance between the two. The action keeps you reading and the steamy scenes later in the book will really get your attention. REALLY STEAMY Quite a worthy book here. I highly recommend it.

This is the story of Ian MacKinnon/Earl Ranulf and Daisy, Miranda's sister, whom we both met in Firelight. As readers of Firelight already know, Ian -as well as the entire Ranulf clan- is a werewolf while Daisy's a very ordinary human unlike her talented sister. Unlikely as the relationship between them seems, since Ian in the first book was more of a villain than a hero and also infatuated with Miranda, Daisy's forced to accept his protection when she becomes the -almost- victim of a werewolf's attack. Daisy knows better than to trust Ian after the way he tried to ruin her sister's marriage, but she can't help being attracted to him and slowly but steadily, coming to like him when she sees he's more than a handsome facade. Ian on the other hand is impressed by her strength, her intelligence, her courage and her will to live the way she -and not the society- desires. Though she's physically very different from the women he usually favors, he can't ignore her lush figure and sexuality anymore than he can deny his own heritage: that of the destined leader of the Ranulf werewolf clan.Sadly this did not come up the first book's brilliance. The protagonists though likable were not as well developed as Archer and Miranda and I never felt deeply moved by their woes and scarred past lives. Simply said, I was more intrigued by the secondary characters of this story like Winston Lane & Poppy (which I hated -until I reached the epilogue- for withholding such important information from her sisters without good reason), Lena, Lucien and mostly Talent, than the actual hero and heroine. Even though I was initially charmed by the instant and easy connection between Ian and Daisy, the fact that Daisy left her sister when in pain to go and start an 'honest' relationship with Ian, only to forget telling him who she really was until he asked days later, was the beginning of the end for me. The fact that their relationship was also based too much on lust didn't endear it to me either, as well as the abrupt changing of mind that Ian had about accepting his role in the pack when he kept resisting it for ages. The mystery though, the action, the smooth writing style and the glimpses of London's secret world of supernatural beings, kept my interest alive and I'm looking forward for the next book in the series hoping the main characters will have more 'flesh' on them.ARC provided by NetGalley

After being attacked in an alley by a creature that resembles both man and wolf, Daisy Ellis Craigmore finds herself in the arms of Ian Ranulf, Marquis of Northrup. Daisy soon finds out that this thing that attacked her was a werewolf, a sick, dying werewolf that has been killing women that carry her personalized perfume scent upon their skin. And just who is this Ian Ranulf that is determined to keep her within an arms length and safe from this vile creature? A Lycan, who can't help but find the recently widowed Daisy Craigmore attractive & all his. Wheew. Okay. Totally stepping away from my vampire addiction and tooootally falling for this Lycan business! This book was extremely good & aside from me reading this series out of order (and hating myself for going against my OCD self), I didn't feel that I was missing anything while I was reading. Given, there are certain things that were said that totally gives away the first book, but nothing that will keep me from reading it, as I still want to know the details of what happens. Ian Ranulf *sigh* Ian is a Lycan and a mighty sezzy Lycan at that. After living the last 30 some years bedding whores with the resemblance to his late wife, Ian finally finds a woman who awakens him and makes him feel all over again. The problem? She's human & he doesn't want to lose her. Ian will keep her safe and away from this sick werewolf that has her sent stuck up his nose. How? Pure alpha male force of course... Okay, maybe not so forceful, but her options sure are limited with him. Daisy on the other hand will have none of this nonsense from Ian and battles him back wit for wit when the overbearing, sezzy lycan tries to corner her. This book.. If I could go back in time... and jump into a carriage to get down and dirty... I SO WOULD! What I liked about this book is that there's not just lycan's and werewolves, but GIMs, elemental witches, and... well, that's giving away too much. Now, I wouldn't really be into all this, as I've only read one series I absolutely loved with more than one kind of supernatural being in it, but this one really worked out. You knew there were supernaturals at work here, but it was really subtle and not overbearing like "I AM DRACULA AND I WILL SUCK YOUR BLOOOOOD" kinda nonsense on every page. What I didn't like was the slow trot to the sezzy scenes. *sigh* I felt like I was feeling all the tension and build up that Daisy was going through too! Practically screaming for Ian to "Huuur up and stick it in!!" Okay, not all that.. but you know what I mean. Definitely recommending this book. BUUUUUUUT before you read this book, go on ahead and pick up Firelight (Book #1 in the Darkest London series) There's also a third book in this series called Winterblaze, release date: sometime in 2013.

4.5 StarsWhat a beautiful, honest, and intriguing story. Moonglow had my heart pounding through action, devastation, romance, and more. While I wasn't fully immersed until I was about 20% into the book, the 80% that followed was simply incredible.Moonglow is a stand alone novel from the Darkest London series. Although each book includes previous characters in the series, the main characters change with each book, enabling the reader to join in at any point. Each of the female protagonists in all three of the series are sisters who are close and weaved into each other's lives often, which may have attributed for my lack of interest to start...maybe I was missing something from Firelight? Previous knowledge of Ian, or of Archer and Miranda? I'm not sure. However, I do know that while reading Moonglow, the reader was given so much setup and background for Winterblaze (Darkest London, Book 3).Anywho, let's get back to it.I quickly fell in love with Daisy, a feisty, troubled woman, adventuring to conceal her damaged soul with sarcasm, wit, and sex appeal. She is finally finished "mourning" her cruel and vicious husband. In desperate need of flirtation and freedom she hopes to find the piece of herself that has been deeply buried since "the incident."Ian Ranulf is a mindlessly handsome rogue, bedding copious amounts of women and caring not for the holds placed on him in society. After being in exile from the Ranulf Clan, he yearns for a social connection while not daring to attempt one, having reaped consequences far to terrible to bare. I adored Ian, faltering with his thoughts of immortality and concealing much pain behind his humor and brashness.Daisy and Ian's relationship begins in a difficult place. A murderer is scavenging the streets of London, following a very particular scent - a perfume that Daisy herself created. Drawn to protect a woman who hides more than she shows, Ian begins to feel alive once again. Keeping constant secrets from each other while trying to keep the other alive, may end up causing the death of them both. The depth of storytelling and world building in this novel is just amazing. Ms. Callihan easily weaves her historic tale of the London streets and the creatures living among us. There were so many little treats to uncover throughout this novel that simply left me breathless. Beautiful writing, an honest and believably love story, and excellent adaptations of the paranormal intrigued and riveted - the best part? I now can go back and read book one. :)

Daisy is finally finished with the mourning period for her awful dead husband. Now she has the freedom to do what she wants. Unfortunately on her first night of freedom she witnesses a werewolf attack and is able to save herself by hiding. Lycan, Ian Ranulf, comes upon the scene too late to stop the werewolf, but takes Daisy to his home to let her recover and clean up. He is very attracted to Daisy, and once it becomes clear that the werewolf is after Daisy, he becomes very protective. Ian left his pack many years ago. Being alone has taken a toll. He has become jaded of late. Daisy becomes someone he can see settling down with. But her mortality is an issue. Daisy also has her own issues. Her husband really did a number on her and she does have some self worth doubts. She is trying to push past those negative feelings, but it does make her reluctant to get close to Ian.This book had a very different feel to it than the first book in the series, Firelight. There was a lot more mystery to that book. We, and Miranda, had no idea what Archer was hiding behind his mask. In Moonglow, we know Ian is lycan from the beginning. Also, Daisy easily accepts the fact that there are lycan and werewolves because she grew up with a sister who has supernatural powers. Ian pretty much tells her right away what he is. It also didn't feel as dark to me. Ian's flirting and teasing is probably the main reason for this. He's just too adorable to be dark and broody. I did enjoy this one just about as much as Firelight. I wish we could have explored Daisy's discovered power more. This book seemed to focus more on Ian's supernatural side. But overall, it was excellent and I relished getting back into Callihan's magical world.ARC provided through NetGalley.

Firelight starts with a prologue, which gives Archer’s view of his first meeting with Miranda. She changes his life, gives him hope, only, she doesn’t know it or who he is.

The romance between Archer and Miranda builds slowly and realistically. They connect and see each other for who they are, not the masks each wears, although only Archer’s is physical. I did get tired of secrets and was glad when they trusted each other enough to reveal themselves. Archer’s secret reveal is especially touching-I really felt for him. The sexual tension is well written, so by the time they finally get to it-the reader should be as ready as they are. Archer and Miranda have been married for several weeks anyway-it’s past time! The ending was satisfying. I am ready to read the next book, Moonglow, about Ian, Marquis Northrup, a werewolf.

Oh I love the Beauty and the Beast Tale ! The author takes the well told story and whips into her own vision, beautifully. Miranda the strong women and the Super sexy Archer who hides behind his mystery.

Archer has decided that Miranda is the one for him. He will marry her ! She accepts the proposal, grudgingly. Not out of love but obligation. He is framed for murders that he did not commit. She believes him, but his secrets soon drag her into more troubles.

Both are hiding things, both believing it for the best. Secrets have a way of reveling themselves in terrible ways with harsh outcomes.

I loved the world building and scenery developed through the story and look forward to more from this author in the future.
