About this audiobook

Love is just around the corner . . .

Sweet, shy Mara Hanover is in love with her neighbor. For four years, she has secretly watched her dream man from afar. Handsome police detective Mitch Lawson is way out of her league. She's a girl from the wrong side of the tracks, and there's no way a guy like Mitch would want anything to do with her. But when Mara has a leaky faucet that she can't fix, it's Mitch who comes to her rescue.

Mitch has been eyeing his beautiful neighbor for a long time. He jumps at the chance to help her, and soon their formerly platonic relationship gets very hot and heavy. But when Mara gets a disturbing phone call from her cousin's kids, she gets pulled back into the life she's tried so hard to leave behind. Can the hot law man convince Mara to let go of her past-and build a future with him?

Kristen Ashley

Kristen Ashley grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana but has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multi-generational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland and existed amongst the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

I LOVED the beginning of the book, with Mara's intense shyness and awkwardness and insecurity. I loved her rating system and pining after her neighbor. It was geared up to be one of my favorite tropes, but I think it just got too serious. Also, it turns out that she is not overweight or plain really, just insecure about coming from a "trashy" family, which is a bit less interesting to me but still made for some decent angst. I think it just went on too long. After the relationship got settled, I started to lose interest. Plus kids are not really a theme that appeals to me. But I loved the angst and insecurity in the beginning! (3.5 stars)

Reading LAW MAN came on the heels of a week of mainlining Kristen Ashley. I was already glutted on the alpha-dialect of Ashley's heroes, and unfortunately, found this heroine pretty unlikeable. Ashley gives ample reason for her hang ups, I just wasn't particularly interested in her endless scoring and low self-esteem. I'll be back for more Ashley, but I need a break.

Mara was obnoxious, whiny, and annoying. Mitch was a great character but no man would have put up with her attitude and stubbornly dimwitted personality. I love Kristen Ashley and the Colorado Mountain Series but this particular book was not at all her best work. Listen if you want to pull your hair out and scream.

I have read this book many times.
I liked the person who was narrating. I felt that her Billy voice was a little too babyish, and I felt her Bill voice was more like a druggy, spaced out voice. I have never thought of Bill as that person (although he is a druggy and thief). The voice she used for Bill was more like the voice of the KEVSTER in the Rock Chick series. But at least this narrator wasn't monotone.

For a book that was fairly light reading, there was a surprising amount of plot and character development. Most the book was good, but I found the final chapter a bit mushy for my taste. The narration by Kate Russell, was excellent

I'm definitely agreeing with other reviews in that Mara's rating system was silly (especially the way she clung to it) but it was definitely a way to commmunicate her self-esteem issues (even if she was definitely blind to what was going on around her - maybe it's the old 'you see what you expect to see')

I really liked this one and yes.. I now want to read more KA books.

I couldn’t finish this book. The heroine was whiny and too lacking in self-esteem. Just when I thought he finally got through she’d be whining again. She annoyed me. Hopefully she grew up by the end but I wasn’t going to stick around to find out.

This heroine is utterly unlikeable, unfortunately. I've stopped and started so many times because I really and generally enjoy this author. But the heroine and her hangups were not fleshed out and the repetitive nature of the telling of these hangups was a major turnoff.

If it wasn't for Mara being so infuriatingly dumb (Mitch referred to it as "head stuck-up your ass") I'd have given this book 4.5 stars. When I spend half the book shaking my head I have to subtract stars.

Mitch was a wonderful character throughout but Mara took to the last quarter of the book before I stopped cringing at her attitude. Characters need a flaw or flaws to overcome but this particular "I'm not worthy" routine really irritated me.

Secretly in love with her neighbor, Detective Mitch Lawson, for four years, sweet and shy Mara Hanover has never gathered the courage to speak two words to him. All of this changes, however, when Mara’s bathroom faucet packs it in and Mitch jumps at the chance to finally become acquainted with his adorable neighbor. Mara is convinced that Mitch is out of her league and would be better off far away her and her nightmare relatives, but Mitch has other ideas…

The best installment in the series so far.

Much has been said in numerous reviews about Mara’s rating system and low self-esteem. Personally, this tendency did not irritate me as much as expected and it is impossible not to admire Mara for her strength of character in overcoming her awful childhood and upbringing. She not only succeeds in making something of herself, but is also a truly generous and caring person.

Mitch is a simply yummy hero! He has all of the wonderful alpha qualities of the other heroes in the series without the arrogance of Brock and the domineering of Hawk. Not that these traits are a turn off in their books (although they had their asshat moments), but sometimes you just want a hero who is sweet and loving without all the macho bravado.

Mara and Mitch’s slow burn romance is sweet and sexy, and it is wonderful watching Mara come out of her shell and grow in confidence. The couple’s relationship with children in Mara’s care is an added bonus and leads to some amazing heartwarming moments.

Kate Russell’s narration of the audiobook takes some getting used to as her accents are more in line with New Yorkers rather than Denver, but she has slowly become THE voice for the series for me.

Looking forward to Tack Allen’s book next and hope it lives up to expectations.

I wasn't such a fan of this series as I am of Rock Chick or Colorado Mountain, but I have to say that now I so totally am! Mitch and Mara were AWESOME together and this book is definitely the best one of the three so far. Crazy hot chemistry, some swoony dialogues and scenes but I have to say that the best thing about this was the epilogue. Brought tears to my eyes it was that good.

let me just say I love Mitch , any man who can step up to the plate and do what he did for a woman and children is amazing in my book .. this story got me from start to finish , maybe because a little of my own life was in it , but it truly was an amazing Book. KA kicks it with this series bigtime

Mara drove me insane. I wanted to smack her upset the head. She didn't act like a survivor, she acted like a victim. I kept reading because I liked Mitch. I especially liked when Mitch told Mara she had her head up her ass.

I've been reading Kristen Ashley's books for a few months now, and she definitely has a certain flavor, a formula she almost follows exactly. However, she still manages to keep all her stories just fresh enough that I can't help but keep reading.

In this story, we get Mitch Lawson. Mitch is a cop, but he isn't quite as rough around the edges as KA's usual heroes. He has a nice apartment with fancy furniture and dresses well. But he's still a KA guy, alpha at his core. I loved the way he wanted Mara, but was so patient in waiting for her. No, he wasn't a monk, he didn't spend all his nights alone, but once Mara finally opened the door to him (with a wonderfully timed broken faucet), Mitch wasted no time in walking right in and slamming that door shut behind him. He knew what he wanted, and he wasn't going to let anything stop him from getting it. He didn't blink when Mara suddenly found herself with three kids to raise, and I loved the way he took them in as his own, and really FOUGHT for them like they were his. It wasn't just to impress the woman, he genuinely fell for them, and I think he would have been a part of their lives, even if it hadn't worked out with Mara. But since they were so good together, of course it worked out.

My only nitpicks with this story was Mara and her insecurity. I know she had a rough life, but how she did NOT see herself as even a little bit attractive is beyond me. I know we women have our hangups, but dayum, Mara was really mess. I loved watching her grow to see herself as others saw her though, a wonderful, caring, beautiful woman, worthy of the love of a good man.

I liked it. I didn't love it, but I did like it. For one thing, the heroine was such a mouse that it was difficult to find any point of interest in her. And the whole rating thing? That was weird. I did love Mitch though. He was dreamy, wonderful, and awesome. Kristen Ashley may have some problems with editing and such, but man, she can create unforgettable alpha males. I think this fact is what keeps me coming back for more, no matter how frustrated and annoyed I get with her writing style.

My Rating: Five stars!Release Date: December 17, 2013Genre: Suspense Erotic RomanceABOUT THE BOOK:Four years ago, Mitch Lawson moved across the breezeway from Mara Hanover and she fell in love with the tall, good-looking police detective who had an uncanny ability to dress well even though he’s single. It was not a stalker kind of love; she knows she has no hope since Mitch is way out of her league. That doesn’t change the fact that he’s her dream man. Then one day Mara’s faucet won’t turn off and she knows nothing about plumbing. Being a good guy, Mitch offers to help then he invites himself over for pizza. Mara gives it a go but finds herself running away from him (literally) on their first date, standing him up their second and then she runs into him (again literally) on her way to save her ne’er do well, criminal cousin’s kids who’d just run away from their ne’er do well, criminal Dad.Suddenly, Mara finds she has on her hands the guardianship of two kids and a gorgeous police detective who’s willing to do anything to help out… including giving fabulous foot rubs. But Mara knows who she is and where she came from and she knows Detective Mitch Lawson is better than her. Hot law man Mitch disagrees and his challenge is to convince Mara to let go of her past and he sets about building a family at the same time he finds he also needs to protect them all against known and unknown adversaries that would tear them apart.MY REVIEW:So wow, there are some books that you read and like, then there are some books that you read and love. Then there are books that you read and won’t ever forget. Of course this book sticks in my head as all of the above. I loved the story told by Ms. Ashley. A lot of real world is seen in this story, and there are some tough spots to get past, ones that aren’t typically seen in a romance, but I think that is what makes her stories so lovable—because they are so real. This story seems to go beyond that realness for me, because a lot of it I can relate to from my childhood. I have to say, living the life some of these characters did, I can personally vouch that Ms. Ashley has caught the feelings and worries of the characters spot on. The love story running along the side with everything else was just as touching. And the love between the two leads, and the two minor characters was just as fulfilling. I won’t lie and say the story won’t cause you anguish, because any reader who can get as deep in the head of someone as Ms. Ashley aims to keep, will find themselves struggling right along with everyone else. But this is a story you won’t soon forget. And it’s one you’ll love.

    I feel shame.

    -----

I really didn’t care for Mara too much. She had major ass confidence issues – too many to count.

Mitch was cool. What killed me (the most) was the plot moppets. God bless! The damn reason that Mitch and Mara slept in the bed together for the first time was due to a plot moppet screaming. The reason that Mitch had a “better” excuse to hang around more was due to a plot moppet. Save me from plot moppets.

The heroine didn’t get kidnapped this time – this time it was the plot moppets. Ha!

But at least this one didn’t have a crazy bitch ex-wife who was married but still making her ex-husband’s life a living hell. (Though I always wonder where KA gets the idea for these spineless ass men. It’s unlikely that a man with any self-esteem at all would put up with his woman tracking down some old boyfriend/husband like that. That shit wouldn’t fly.) In this book we have the plot moppets’ grandma and aunt be the crazy bitches. So we still have crazy bitches.

After the plot moppets Gwen infuriated me the most. I am so happy I DNF’d her book. She’s an annoying bitch in everyone else’s book. Can’t take more of her. Let me be real real honest. Any bitch that my man is willing to fight another man over is NOT going to be my fucking friend. We are NOT going to be “girls” and hang out. And DT for DAMN THAT if that kind of bitch is going to be “checking to make sure” that my man is with the right kind of woman. Fuck that shit. She would have caught a beat down of epic proportions.

So obviously we can tell that the Dream Man series is not too much more than total wish fulfillment. It’s an entire series of books dedicated to making the bad boy good, making the bad boy into an excellent father and husband; making the women in to mini starlets with hot clothes and a reason to be kidnapped. Dafucq?

The sexy, super Detective Mitch James Lawson is back and his caring, attentive, sensitive, super alpha ways make him a tremendous hero in the Law Man.

Mara Hanover has been “in love” with her neighbor Mitch for the past 4 years. He is her dream man but she avoids contact with Mitch because she believes he is way out of her league. Mara comes from trailer park trash, escaping that life by moving to Colorado, she has spent years building her new life. She is a very successful mattress sales person, has a great group of core friends and pines after a man she can never have because she feels she can never be good enough for him.

The only thing that Mara has from her past is her cousin Bill, criminal, and his 2 children, Billy and Billie. Although she loves Bill she knows his life is a mess but she never realizes how bad until she gets a call from a convenient store saying Billy (boy 9) and Billie (girl 6) have run away, are hungry and are at the store waiting for her.

Mara literally runs into Mitch rushing to get to her cousins. Mitch being his detective self immediately realizes something is wrong and pushes himself into Mara’s situation. Mitch and Mara take the kids out to eat and when they go to return them to Bill they find him surrounded by illegal drugs and stoned out of his mind. Mitch calls it into police head quarters and he helps Mara take the children into her custody.

Mara fights Mitch’s help all the way … which is kind of annoying but OMG Mitch’s awesomeness totally overshadows any of her “I’m not good enough to be with you” stupidness. Mara does eventually realize her worth, seeing herself through Mitch’s eyes.

Kristen Ashley, once again, hit that emotional cord that tied you to the characters. The kids were wonderful, Mitch fabulous, Mara eventually got her “head out of her A&*(“ and some of the great characters from pasts books make a good showing. I had some issues with Mara, but she still had lots of funny and the way Mitch handle her crazy was brilliant. Overall I’m still giving Law Man a five and its going down as one of my all time favorites because this really flawed heroin who grew to overcome just worked for me.
