About this audiobook
Ruined beyond repair and shunned by London society, lovely Miranda Rohan rebelliously embraces the freedom that comes from having nothing left to lose. However, this dangerous course throws her under the power of the darkly enigmatic Lucien de Malheur-known to many as the Scorpion.
Seeking to destroy the Rohans, Lucien traps Miranda in a marriage she thinks is based on friendship but instead is rooted in vengeance. Yet even when she realizes the truth, their enmity fuels a shocking passion-and perhaps even more.
Such a man might drive anyone to murder.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5good story but too long. very abrupt ending.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5If you like twisted, evil heroes, then Lucien de Malheur is for you (full disclosure: I love Lucien). He's determined to seek revenge on the Rohan family for what happened to his sister and plans to use Miranda Rohan as the instrument for that reprisal. Miranda is a resilient young lady. She was ruined by a cad and has lost her place in society, but makes the best of it. But she's lonely, and when Lucien throws out his lures, well, you can just imagine (or read the book).I really love this series. Ms. Stuart has written a wonderful set of characters here, and what would you expect with the parents they had if you read Reckless, the second book of the series. Jane, part of the secondary romance, was a quiet counterpoint to Miranda, but her love story makes a lovely contrast to the wildness of Lucien and Miranda. Lucien is the man you love to hate and I loved how Miranda stood up to him and brought out the best in him but didn't change his character too much. Oh, and the Lake district setting! In my opinion, Cumbria doesn't get used enough in historical romances and it should with the wild loveliness of the peaks and water. I can't wait to keep going in this series and see what Ms. Stuart has ready for me next.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Damn, this book was rather screwed up. I don't even know what to say about it. 4 stars because it kept me interested.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Favorite Line: "You can get an erection less than an hour after I've tried to kill you?" she said in disbelief. "Just how perverse are you?" "Let me show you."
After having such an enthusiastic to the first of the Rohan novels, "Ruthless", I had resigned myself to the rest of the series not being able to meet my expectations. When "Reckless" was an enjoyable, but not spectacular, read, I was convinced my initial prediction would be correct. And then came "Breathless." With so many of the elements I adored in "Ruthless," yet in an of itself utterly unique, "Breathless" just may unseat it's predecessor as my favorite historical romance. Once again, Stuart takes familiar themes and takes them to new and interesting places. Miranda Rohan is strong and clever, outsmarting villains where she can (and refusing to be devastated when she can't). My reaction to Lucien de Malheur was as mixed as Miranda's own, and I found myself caught between wanting him to get his comeuppance and wanting him to get his happily ever after. I enjoyed how Stuart kept me entertained and guessing the whole book through.
One warning to potential readers, however. "Breathless" includes mention of a rape, a subject which, justly so, illicits varied and strong reactions amongst readers. For this reason alone I know "Breathless" may not be for everyone. For those readers I recommend picking up "Ruthless", where Stuart creates plucky heroines and nefarious heros and a less controversial story line. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Almost a four star read. Miranda Rohan was kidnapped and raped by her kidnapper, a man who was trying to force her to marry him. She escapes and braves aprobrium to avoid marrying her kidnapper. Her family support her but her actions put her beyond the pale for society.Lucien de Malheur, known to many as the Scorpion, lures her into his clutches. He had put her kidnapper up to it he is determined to make the Rohan family miserable, his sister killed herself because one of them rejected her because she was not sane. The two of them have to work at the relationship, once it's established, and it's interesting to see the two of them at work at it. It's fun to watch Lucien try to resist his feelings for her and to watch her decide that if she must she might as well have fun.I enjoyed the read and will be looking for more by this author.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Having heard of but never read an Anne Stuart book before, I really found myself liking this one. Okay I found Lucien to be a little over the top when he was first introuduced. I kept thinking Lord Voldermort when he he first met Miranda in the carriage. I also had a few issuses about how he could be so heavily invovled in the criminal world and still be the hero. That being said I liked him and Miranda, although at times I found some of actions really kind of dumb. After all that , it is just a romance novel and the purpose of a romance novel is to take you away fro a few hours and make you forget the world. I forgot about the world. I found myself wanting to know what was going to happen and if these two would fall in love. I liked how the darkness was infused with parts that made me smile. I loved the riduclousness of it all. I am now a fan of Anne Stuart and will now buy her books when I see them in the book store.
