A Cat Was Involved(Chet and Bernie Mystery)By Spencer QuinnI loved how this story unfolded. It introduced the characters in a unique fashion and it was mostly told by the point of view of the dog, Chet. Since Chet is a smart dog but still a dog, he can't talk. So many chances go by if only Chet and Bernie knew each other's cues better.Excellent mystery for such a small story and a great taste of what is to come!

This short story explains how Chet flunked out of the police canine school and how he and Bernie came to be a team. It wasn’t Chet’s fault that he failed the last test; he was distracted by what turned out to be a bigger case. It’s a delightful tale, told by Chet, and who, since he is a dog (although an extraordinary one), doesn’t always understand human nature and language. This fun tale is the “purrfect” beginning.

Fans of Chet and Bernie will know that Chet often mentions, but never fully explains, how he flunked out of police dog school on the very last day, the very last test, the leaping test, his best thing--and all because of a cat.

    This is that story.

It's also Chet's first meeting with Bernie, and recruitment into the Little Detective Agency. The two soft-as-mush tough guys begin to get acquainted, and start to learn how to work together.

If you're a fan of Chet and Bernie, this is a sweet, charming addition to their story.

    Recommended.

    I bought this story.

A cute story for young readers about a PI and his dog, Chet. Narrated by Chet, the author has captured his voice beautifully and with humour. A fun read.

Very short little appetizer of a tale that was a very fun read. My first intro to the Chet & Bernie series and am looking forward to reading more soon. Worth the $.99 for the chuckles I got.

This is really a short story, the prequel to Dog On It and the entire Chet & Bernie mystery series, but it fills in a blank for me & it’s important enough for me to record as book. (Count it as a novella: honestly, it’s hard to know how long it was since it was on my Kindle.)This series is my very favourite. It’s light-hearted enough to be narrated by the dog, which device is a source of much humour. But it’s always a good, serious mystery too. This short story filled in the blanks of Chet & Bernie’s meeting – and it has a mystery to boot. Loved it!Read this if: you’re a Chet & Bernie fan (obviously); you like dogs and mysteries and are looking for a new series to read; or you want a small taste of what the series is like – if you like this story, you’ll like the books. 5 stars

As fans know, Chet first met Bernie on that fateful day when he flunked out of K-9 police school. The details of that day though have always remained a little vague (like so much in Chet’s doggy brain). All we know is that Chet had been the best leaper in his K-9 class, but for some reason he failed his final leaping test...and that a cat was involved...and that there was some blood. But whose? The test, the cat, the blood—all pieces of a puzzle that, when solved, will bring down a dangerous gang of thieves—and signal the start of a beautiful friendship. This fateful day has been alluded to in every book in the series, and now fans of Chet and Bernie will finally get to find out what actually happened. For these two beloved characters, it was something like love at first sight—and, for Chet, at first smell, too.A great start to this series. Very clever that the action is from Chet's point of view...and smell.Looking Forward to reading them.

This is a short story, not a whole book. It would have been a 4 star, but I was disappointed in the length. I knew it would be short, but it seemed really short. This is a prequel to the Chet and Bernie series that I love. For the uninitiated, Chet is the dog partner of private investigator Bernie Little. The stories are told from Chet's point of view. This prequel tells the story of when Chet met Bernie, when Chet flunked out of K-9 training. I've listened to the other Chet and Bernie books as audiobooks, but this story was only available on Kindle. I still heard narrator Jim Frangione's "Chet" voice in my head as I read. I see it just became available on Audible today.

This is as enjoyable as all the Chet and Bernie mysteries. However, I think this prequel contradicts statements from other books.
