About this audiobook

For five pounds sterling, the convict was hers. Though Cassie hated the slave trade, her Virginia plantation demanded the labor, and she knew this fevered man would surely die if she left him. But as his wounds healed, and as his muscled chest bronzed from the sun, Cassie realized Cole Braden was far more dangerous than his papers had indicated-for he could steal her breath with a glance or lay siege to her senses with a touch.
Abducted, beaten, and given a new name, Alec Kenleigh went from master of an English shipbuilding empire to fourteen years of indentured servitude in the American colonies. There, he was known as Cole Braden, a convicted ravisher and defiler of women. While he longed to ravish the auburn-haired beauty who owned him, he knew his one hope of earning her love-and his freedom-was to prove his true identity. Only then could he turn the tables and obtain his sweet release.
Contains mature themes.

Alec Kenleigh is a wealthy shipbuilder from England. One night he is set upon by thieves and knocked unconscious. In a daze of pain, he is sent to Newgate where he becomes a victim of mistaken identity and is sent to the Colonies.Cassie Blakewell is running her father's plantation under the guise of her father being "out of town" for awhile. She's good at it, but knows she will be unable to retain her authority if people found out the truth. In the midst of all this, she purchases the Indentureship of Alec- although he's now known as Cole Braden. When he's finally on his way to healing and awakens he's shocked to find months have gone by and that everyone is laboring under the impression he's a criminal. Cassie is smart enough to not believe his claims out right, but she does agree to send word England to make some inquiries. In the meantime, Alec and Cassie find an unwanted attraction exists between them and, despite the interference of a local rich boy who desires Cassie's hand in marriage, they discover neither is who the other thought they were.Pamela Clare's Historicals are classic Historical Romance Novels, to be sure. They retain the familiar themes, but they also add the spice we've come to expect from more recent entries in the romance genre. But even given that, they have a way of making you feel like you've arrived home after being away for a very long time. And just like when I visit home after a long time away, I discovered I had much the same feeling when it was time to leave this book as I do when it's time to leave my family- It's a nice place to visit, but I can't live here anymore. You see, time away has made me nostalgic for the "good ol' days", but when I get up close to it again, I realize there is a reason why I moved away!In Sweet Release, Clare has written a thick, rich historical novel. It has a fierce hero, wrongly imprisoned and sent to the colonies for indentureship, A feisty heroine who runs an entire plantation for her indisposed father and enough atmosphere to make plantation life during the early days of the colonies come alive without overburdening us with mundane details.Unfortunately, our heroine is a naïve virgin. Ugh. How out of touch is THAT character trait right about now? In the past, I was able to brush over the shy machinations of a virgin too scared to handle the far more knowledgeable hero. In fact I scoffed at others who brought up this issue in the past, thinking them elitist snobs. Not anymore.Sigh.I also felt like I was watching these two from afar. I'm not sure what was missing, but something kept me at a distance. Perhaps a lack of depth? Not sure but Ride the Fire by Clare was a much better read, imo.I guess I'm growing up, because these issues really bugged me in Sweet Release. Still, it wasn't a bad read. So, although I can appreciate the magic she puts in her historicals, perhaps it's best to relegate them to occasional visits. That way the love I once had for the sub-genre won't die out- even if it means admiring it from afar for now!

A modern book that reads like a 1980s romance novel complete with adventures across two continents, a ton of secondary characters, a really evil villain and an insane plot. An OK read but I'd rather read a book from the 1980s instead of one written like it was.

Read for Fun/Listened for Review (Kindle/Tantor)Overall Rating: 4.25Story Rating: 4.00Character Rating: 4.50Audio Rating: 4.50 (not part of my overall rating)First Thought when Finished: Sweet Release by Pamela Clare was such a slow-burning romance with an emotionally wrenching backdrop of a story. I loved how Pamela did not shy away from tackling slavery, society differences, and romance between two different stations (though not really). It was just a wonderful read/listen from beginning to end. Alec and Cassie were a fantastic match and their slow-burning romance was perfect for the time!Audio Thoughts: Narrated By Kaleo Griffith / Length: 14 hrs and 46 mins I admit that this is only my second Kaleo G narration (I listened to one of the MacKinnon's Rangers books on audio). I love his voice! I am going to now have to tackle the iTeam series. He has such a rich voice and his women's voices are strong not wimpy. Overall, I adored the narration. He may have made me love Alec more!Part of my Read It, Rate It, File It, Reviews!

I wasn't overly bowled over by the story, a bit too angsty for my liking and drawn out a bit too long for us to find out if the truth will ever come out about Alec. English nobleman is kidnapped and sent to the colonies as a convict (it's 1730). Turns out his brother planned the whole thing so he could inherit. While in Virginia, Alec must try to convince everyone who he really is while also falling in love with the mistress of the plantation who has bought his indenture. I liked it overall, but Geoffrey, the villain, was over the top with his awfulness, as the same with Philip, Alec's brother. Still, not bad and the love scenes sizzled.

Not a huge fan of historical romances, but this book managed to hook me in and refused to let go. I loved the story Ms. Clare set up here and felt as though how it came to be was completely original. The writing was superb and the action enough to make you sit on the edge of your seat in fear. I loved the basis behind the plot and found that the sensuality scenes in the book didn’t distraction, only enhanced, the overall story. These two characters really gathered my attention and the secondary characters only made the entire experience that much better. I won’t spoil the second book review in this one, but Ms. Clare had deemed that one her favorite. This would be the only time I would have to disagree with her – I found this piece so enthralling that I have set it as one of my favorites.Steamy, funny, fantastic read for five stars. Run, don’t walk, to get this now!
