      Suddenly one summer by Julie JamesVictoria Slade is a divorce lawyer. After the breakin she decides to move into a new apartment. One of the tenants is Ford. Ford Dickson is an investigative reporter and he's just helping his mother bury his father.He's upset about his sister Nicole who is raising a baby without the husband and no child support. Victoria decides to help Nicole out with Ford being the investigator. They pretend to be out on a date-looking for Peter.Hot steamy sex and you wonder if that will get in the way of them solving the missing baby daddy case...I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

      I liked it, but it didn't wow me like some of the other books by Julie James. The characters were extremely fun and had some crazy good chemistry and sexy banter. I was actually surprised by how the whole baby thing turned out. Zoe is a cutie.

      Suddenly One Summer by Julie James is a 2015 Jove publication. This is an enjoyable contemporary romance, which centers around high powered divorce attorney, Victoria Slade and her sexy, but irritating neighbor, Ford Dixon. Victoria survives a home invasion robbery, but is now dealing with a panic disorder as a result. Feeling uncomfortable in her townhouse after the break-in, she moves into a loft only to discover her new neighbor has a 'cavalcade' of women coming in and out of his apartment and he's also doing renovations which are disrupting her already fragile sleep patterns. But when Ford's sister, Nicole, needs the advice of an attorney, Ford and Victoria step up to help her out, but spending all that time together is making it awfully difficult to deny the sexual chemistry between them, but what could it hurt? After all, both of them are casual daters, they 'don't get serious, and especially don't do it together.'While the banter between Victoria and Ford is witty and at times pretty funny, there is a more serious undertone at work in the story, which helps to give it more substance than you might think. Victoria's upbringing was sort of grim from an emotional standpoint, which could be why she has trouble with committing to a long term relationship. Ford is also carrying around the burden of regret after losing a family member, and the effects of growing up with an alcoholic father. The quest Victoria and Ford embark on, for Nicole, had them behaving kind of silly at times, and I couldn't help but wonder why they were going about it the old fashioned way instead of using the ease and power that comes from a few clicks on the internet , but it was still fun, and I liked the way everything came together in that storyline. Victoria's panic disorder was handled well, and I thought bringing this issue to the forefront, via a strong, independent woman, was a nice touch, and goes to show there is a lot to be said for getting help when you need it. Both Victoria and Ford enjoyed character growth, but of the two, Victoria seemed to shine the most, facing her worst fears, admitting her mistakes and learning from them. Overall, this is a solid contemporary romance with just a little tiny bit of angst, a nice mix of humor, sexy times, and romance proving that fate and love might be working together in the big scheme of things. 3.5 stars

      This book hit the right notes at the right time. When the author could have taken a trite step in the storyline, she didn't. The H/H's pre-loaded predispositions were not ignored, and a side storyline was not trivialized by a nice little bow in its conclusion. A very refreshing read.

      4.5 "New Perspectives" Stars! Lovers of smart, witty, self-independent heroines will not want to miss Suddenly One Summer. I loved the tension between this duo and the way that their strengths and weaknesses complemented one another. Being a lawyer myself, I could totally get how a legal professional--especially a divorce lawyer--could develop a jaded perspective towards HEAs. The inspiring message that even the most jaded of the jaded individuals are capable of falling into their own perfect match--even when they are wholeheartedly determined to run in the other direction--is a message that a romantic like me, just can't help but to fall in love with.When you combine the philandering ways of her father, and her never ending divorce caseload, Victoria Slade has seen enough marriages fall apart to know that she should avoid falling into that trap like the plague. As a woman does have needs, however, Victoria is perfectly willing to satisfy those urges with casual no strings attached relationships. Frankly, with her demanding career, she is also convinced that's all she has time for anyway.When she first meets investigative journalist Ford Dixon during a night of drinks at a bar, she assumes Ford may just be the right guy to scratch that itch for at least one night. But when she later finds out he is her new next door neighbor, a man who seems to have an endless "cavalcade" of willing females to entertain him, Victoria's initial interest turns sour, leading to some rather feisty, spite filled interchanges.When it turns out that one of the women in Ford's "calvacade" is actually his sister, who got knocked up during a one night stand, and now can barely support herself much less the child, Victoria's altruistic side can not resist taking on her case pro bono. However, that means teaming up with none other than her hot, cocky, annoying neighbor, who will perform the services to track down the MIA baby daddy. Soon they are experiencing success both in their joint venture and their personal interactions-- a fact which only reconfirms their initial attraction. However, getting physically involved can only complicate their working relationship and could never lead to anything anyways given their mutual desires to stay away from any form of a long term relationship. When they each begin to realize that the other may very well be the sole exception to their rule against a HEA, will they be brave enough to explore what they always strived to avoid?Wow, what a story. I loved Ms. James' attention to the development of each character's background and intense psychological and past history barriers towards commitment. The joint tackling of Ford's sister's case also provided an interesting side story to add to the suspense and complexity of the central romance. The combination of both these story lines converges to form a satisfying romance with depth.This was my first experience with Julie James. I kept hearing such great things about her writing, that when I got an opportunity to review Suddenly One Summer, I jumped at the chance. I am so glad I did! I now know that there is a vast backlist, including Ms. James' highly rated FBI/US Attorney Series, that I can't wait to sit down and explore!Source: Review copy provided in exchange for an honest review.
