About this audiobook
‘Tahir spins a captivating, heart-pounding fantasy’ – Us Weekly
Read the explosive New York Times bestselling debut that’s captivated readers worldwide. Set to be a major motion picture, An Ember in the Ashes is the book everyone is talking about.
What if you were the spark that could ignite a revolution?
For years Laia has lived in fear. Fear of the Empire, fear of the Martials, fear of truly living at all. Born as a Scholar, she’s never had much of a choice.
For Elias it’s the opposite. He has seen too much on his path to becoming a Mask, one of the Empire’s elite soldiers. With the Masks’ help the Empire has conquered a continent and enslaved thousands of Scholars, all in the name of power.
When Laia’s brother is taken she must force herself to help the Resistance, the only people who have a chance of saving him. She must spy on the Commandant, ruthless overseer of Blackcliff Academy. Blackcliff is the training ground for Masks and the very place that Elias is planning to escape. If he succeeds, he will be named deserter. If found, the punishment will be death.
But once Laia and Elias meet, they find that their destinies are intertwined and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire.
In the ashes of a broken world one person can make a difference. One voice in the dark can be heard. The price of freedom is always high and this time that price might demand everything, even life itself.
Editor's Note
Intricate relationships…
This brutal fantasy dystopian novel’s greatest strength is its characterization — all the relationships are so intricate. Narrators Aysha Kala and Jack Farrar bring the inner turmoil and outer nerves of steel to life.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I enjoyed the book. The plot was alright, although it moved at a snail's pace. The character development and "romance" I found very lacking, but, overall I can say it was an acceptable read. I am on the fence as to whether I should continue with the second book of this series or find something else...

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Interesting and fast paced. I care more about Helene rather than the main characters
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I absolutely loved this book and the voices of Laia and Elias. Off to read the second one!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The chapters read for Elias were great, and it was interesting having 2readers for this book. I really disliked the main female character in this story and really wish that Helen had the main role.. The whole story I felt like I was yelling kiss her to Elias, and yet he never listened..
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Really nice audiobook. Good story and also really well read
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This was just bad. Simplistic morality, Elias was annoying from beginning to end. Laia was more interesting and believable but not quite complex. Helen was the most complex but I'm not reading multiple books just for her. The villains were caricatures.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I would almost give this book a five star rating; It is very well crafted and an alluring world. For some reason however, I found it a bit frustrating, as though I, the reader, already knew what should or would be happening and the characters have stupidly not yet cought on.
In all it is definitely worth reading. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I really enjoyed this audio book. I thought both narrators did a fantastic job
