Fate and fortune. Power and passion. What does it take to be the queen of a kingdom when you're only seventeen?
Maya is cursed. With a horoscope that promises a marriage of Death and Destruction, she has earned only the scorn and fear of her father's kingdom. Content to follow more scholarly pursuits, her whole world is torn apart when her father, the Raja, arranges a wedding of political convenience to quell outside rebellions. Soon Maya becomes the queen of Akaran and wife of Amar. Neither roles are what she expected: As Akaran's queen, she finds her voice and power. As Amar's wife, she finds something else entirely: Compassion. Protection. Desire...
But Akaran has its own secrets -- thousands of locked doors, gardens of glass, and a tree that bears memories instead of fruit. Soon, Maya suspects her life is in danger. Yet who, besides her husband, can she trust? With the fate of the human and Otherworldly realms hanging in the balance, Maya must unravel an ancient mystery that spans reincarnated lives to save those she loves the most... including herself.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book felt like something out of an ancient myth. It was absolutely stunning. The atmosphere was amazing
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I adored the start of the story. The way the author wrote made the setting and characters captivating. However the beginning also made me expect the main character to be more immersed 'politically' with palace politics before the next phase in her life started (which I found slow, and disappointing). While the beginning was fast paced and emotionally intense the middle-end experienced an excruciating slow build up of events. By the end of the story I was disinterested in how it ends.
The main character aspired to be involved with palace decision making after years of secretly watching the king during meetings. It would have suited the story well if much more in depth glimpses of what she learned from those observations corresponded to current events and decisions made in order to further develop her character and the story. The few times the author made these connections were my itty bitty favourite snips of the story. One being along the lines of "the illusion of power holds great power". The romance felt underdeveloped and insincere.
Developing the main character more by extending the time spent in the beginning setting (the original palace) while being gradually supported/encouraged openly/secretly on the side by her male counterpart would have made for a sincere budding love line. Instead the romance felt so forced - and severely diluted the main character's initial personality. Overall I did take home some meaningful messages out of it, but I wouldn't re-read it.
