      This book grasped me from the beginning and I read into the wee hours to finish it. Bailey Carpenter is a Private Investigator for a Law Firm. While out doing surveillance one night she is brutally assaulted and raped. Her purse with her gun, identification, keys etc. is stolen and her life of fear begins. Every man she sees could be the rapist. She is also dealing with her half-siblings, suing her and her drug addled brother for part of their father's estate. When Clair, her oldest sibling begins to help her things start to settle down. Claire convinces her to see a counsellor and that spurs Bailey on to try and investigate her own situation. Claire and her daughter Jade eventually move in but Bailey's anxiety attacks and hallucinations continue. As the three of them watch the apartment across the way through binoculars and see beatings and rapes, the police begin to think Bailey is more and more unstable. This book has some great twists to it. The characters were believable and my feelings about them changed constantly as my suspicions changed. I did not figure this one out until the end. Suspenseful to the end. A great book.

      This book was not up to par with books I read in the past. I finished it but it was better the more you got into it. The characters came together nicely and made the story flow with ease.

      It has been quite a while since I have read a Joy FIELDING book. Several years back In had pneumonia and was stuck in bed for a week. I read all the books she had out at the time and really enjoyed them. "Someone Is Watching" is a fantastic suspense thriller. It kept me turning the pages as fast as I could.Bailey Carpenter is a very likeable character. She's an investigator for a Miami law firm. She is raped one evening while staking a case. As she goes through the stages of grief and recovery from the case strange things start happening. A la Hitchcock's "Rear Window" she starts watching a neighbor across the way. Her estranged family, children from her father's other marriages, are trying to block the estate. Bailey becomes close with her half sister Caroline and he daughter, Jade.I can't say anymore without revealing the plot. It was A suspenseful read and I hope we see Bailey again.

      This book is about Bailey Carpenter, a private investigator for a Miami law firm. The book starts with her being attacked and raped. She then retreats within her condo, afraid to leave. She is unable to remember much of the attack, but slowly starts to remember some things. Her brother, Heath, comes over and helps her out. Her real help comes with her half-sister Claire and niece, Jade. Even though Claire and her brother are suing Bailey and Heath over their father's will, Claire comes over and takes care of Bailey. She fills the kitchen with groceries and is there to offer support. To pass the time, Bailey picks up a pair of binoculars and starts spying on her neighbors across the street. She starts watching one man in particular. The more she watches him, the more she wonders. At one point, she thinks he may actually be watching her in return. She continues to watch, even if it means losing credibility with the police and her family.As I was reading this book, parts were hard for me to read. Not because the writing was bad, but just the opposite. The author's description of how Bailey felt about her mom and her mom's passing was realistic and hit a little close to home. I wet through the same emotions not to long ago and was hard to read them.The author did a fantastic job of putting you in Bailey's mind. You went through all of her emotions even if you didn't want to at times.Though the book started off about her attack and trying to remember her attacker, it turned out to be more about the mystery of her neighbor. I feel as though the attack portion of this story took a back seat and only served as a way to get her to stay in her condo. The ending seemed like the author remembered the attack portion of the story and rushed to tie up that loose end. The main story arc was the neighbor, I think that the B story could have been anything that kept her in the condo, didn't have to be the assault. I feel that the book would have been better for it. The ending wouldn't have been left feeling like a side note. That would be why I only gave it 4 stars. I do have to say I wouldn't mind more stories with Bailey and Jade, who I really liked.

      Someone is Watching is my first Joy Fielding book. I like the review copies for a chance to read a new (to me) author. I felt the book started out slowly, perhaps this is the style of her other books.Then the main character, private detective Bailey Carpenter, is raped while on a stake out. I was hooked following the lead character's rape and the exploration of emotional response following the event. I appreciated how the emotional reactions to her dysfunctional family intertwined with her own reaction to the violence perpetrated on her physically and the emotional turmoil that followed. I can understand the two reactions relayed in other reviews. We rarely move outside Bailey's condo except as a voyeur. We share Bailey's uncertainty as to what is real and what is imagined. Predictable ending as others have complained? Probably. Disappointing? Not for me. Joy Fielding did not make it to the top of my reading list, but I will pick up another of her books when the opportunity arises. I should note that her's is the first book I have read on an airplane (where I read most of the mysteries and suspense novels I enjoy) where I had another passenger ask if it was her new book. The woman gushed about Fielding's book and said she has read them all. I would have passed the book along had I finished it before the end of the flight.

      This is a quick reading fascinating look at what happens to private investigator Bailey Carpenter after she is raped on the job. There are so many twists and turns in this tale; one never knows who did it or why Bailey seems to be losing her mind. Her half-sister comes to her aid, bringing her quirky teenage daughter, the real star of the book! The ending is one not to be expected. I am looking forward to reading more tales with this character!

      Very readable novel featuring investigator Bailey Carpenter whose life is taken from her by a rapist. I expect that Fielding's depiction of the anxiety a rape victim experiences is dead on, but after awhile the main character's paranoia got to be too much.

      I didn't really like this book, the entire book was mostly Bailey dealing with her rape. Only did in the last 20 pages or so did the book move on. I was sad to see that everything I thought was exactly as it was. I finished this book only to see how it ended. This book wasted to much time on her rape and then all the sudden time flew ahead. I truly think an attack and not a rape would have been just as effective and the book could have moved quicker and been more interesting.I didn't really even understand how it could play out the way it did...but then it did make sense BUT then kind of dropped...I may try reading the next in the Bailey series if I run into it at the library but it is going to take that to pull me in. Maybe, Bailey can grow on me.

      A good suspense story about a rape survivor getting her life back after the attack despite many obstacles. Few of the characters are "nice" people, although surprisingly the police come off looking good. My experience is that authors tend to demonize the police as being unsympathetic but in this case they are supportive in the face of some bizarre behaviour. It's not a comfortable read but a good suspense story.

      Wow! That was an incredible story. It's been awhile since I've read a Joy Fielding novel, but she never disappoints! It was a tough story and I wondered about the betrayal before it happened, but it wasn't what I was expecting at all. And the ending, the last two lines left me with a smile on my face.       I can never resist glancing at the other reviews and was shocked to see everyone didn't love this book! For me it was a real page-turner right from the beginning. I believe the sign of a good writer is when they can take an old storyline (watching from a window and seeing a crime) and make it new and exciting. Bailey Carpenter, an investigator for a law office, engages the reader immediately when she's raped while observing a suspect.Traumatized, she holes up in her apartment and begins watching . . . This story has many interesting characters and plot developments.Highly recommend for suspense readers.

      Bailey Carpenter is an investigator for a top notch law firm in Miami. During an investigation, Bailey is brutally attacked by unknown assailant. Bailey becomes a prisoner in her home and suffers from terrible nightmares about her attack. Bailey suspects just about every man she encounters as her rapist and this leads police to doubt her credibility. With help from some family members, Bailey tries to move forward with her life, but it isn't easy.I very much enjoyed this book by Joy Fielding. It is suspenseful and I really had no idea who the predator was until the very end. I look forward to reading more of Fielding's books...

      I enjoyed Someone is Watching which I received as an Early Reviewer. Ms Fielding was able to give the reader the thougt process of someone who experienced a traumatic event and how gradually they were able to get their life back. Bailey, the main character, is more resilient and stronger than she realizes at first. Some of the family in her life were manipulative, some giving and supportive. The character development was quite good, especially with Clair, for whom there is conflicting feelings about her motives and true feelings. I liked that a teenaged neice was thrown into the mix who had more integrity and insightthan most of her adult counterparts. I would recomomend this book.

      Someone is Watching by Joy Fielding gives amazing insight into how a rape or any assault on a person can shatter their lives and self confidence. This is the story of how Bailey puts the pieces of her life back together after a rape and beating left her terrified of everything and fearful for her sanity. At first every man she sees is suspect but she slowly gathers her confidence and starts investigating a neighbor she has been spying on. I enjoyed this book, but at times it did seem like the author was repeating the same scenario over and over. I had the plot figured out half way through.

      Fielding's homage to 'Rear Window' is a winner. Briefly, it's the story of Bailey Carptenter, a young female private detective, who is raped while doing surveillance on a case. Recovery is made difficult by her family history - both her parents have recently died, her step siblings are suing for a share of the estate, her brother seems to have a drug problem, her married lover has been unfaithful with his now pregnant wife, the rapist remains at large, and not least of all, she keeps getting hang up phone calls.Potential readers should know one important thing: suspense builds with (for me) unseen twists and turns, so DON'T READ AHEAD. Fielding is a master at her craft. And this is Fielding in her prime.

      I thought this was a good book. The beginning started a little slow and then it improved somewhat but always kept me wanting more. It definitely had a lot of twists and turns. If you are looking for a mystery it is worth a try.

      2.5 out of 5 stars - A private investigor is raped and her world is turned upside down as she tries to figure out who did this to her and why.Meanwhile, the reader is treated to an unending stream of consciousness internal dialog. Bailey Carpenter completely falls apart, becomes a prisoner in her condo and sees every man as her rapist and a threat. She's a total mess and it got old quickly. Bailey stalks a man in another apartment with her binoculars, deals with her brother, Heath (a total loser), her half-sister (who comes to her rescue bearing food and a precocious niece), and her married lover. The resolution is a long time coming and by the time the conclusion is reached through a completely predictable climax, the reader is sick and tired of the character of Bailey and disappointed in the whodunit and th whole mess.I've read other Joy Fielding books and enjoyed them, so I was quite let down by what started out as a compelling and interesting story. The main character of Bailey totally annoyed me and I disliked her. The pat ending will probably satisfy some suspense thriller fans but I really didn't like the direction the story line took. I hope this is not the beginning of some kind of series based on this character. I'll probably still try another of this author's books, but won't really be recomminding this one.Thanks to LibraryThing for a copy of this book to review.

      Inspired by the voyeuristic suspense of Rear Window, Someone is Watching follows Bailey Carpenter, an investigator for a large law firm in Miami. She is a strong, independent young woman who loves her job and is confident in her abilities. While on a stakeout in search of a deadbeat dad, she is brutally attacked and nearly killed. She comes home from the hospital a changed woman, fearful and unable to leave her apartment. As she recovers physically, her psychological and emotional recovery are much slower and she struggles to discern what is real and what she has imagined. The police investigation seems to be making no progress and Bailey's fear and numerous 911 calls cause the detectives to start doubting her sanity and ability to know what is real. With the help of her half-sister Claire and a therapist, Bailey starts feeling more in control and starts an investigation of her own. Who attacked her and why? What is real and what is she imagining or worse, hallucinating? How will she ever regain her life? Someone is Watching is Joy Fielding's 23rd novel and this master of suspense is still going strong. This novel kept me wondering up until the very end. It is definitely a page-turner. Well written and tautly plotted. Every suspense or thriller lover will not be able to put this one down.(Review based on complimentary Advance Reader copy.)

      Some of the more recent Joy Fielding's haven't wowed me, but this one sure did. It has been a while since I have read one of hers and this one made me remember why she's one of my favourite authors.Bailey is a recent rape victim. She was working as an investigator and a night of surveillance ended in her worst nightmare. The event haunts her and she can't let go of the terror. She never saw the rapist, only remembers certain features and the words "tell me you love me". Her life is falling apart, she can't work , she can't eat, she can't sleep, her whole existence is reliving the event in her head and seeing every man she meets as her possible rapist. She has no one she can rely on. Not Heath, her irresponsible brother who lives every day as a party. Travis, her old boyfriend, almost as irresponsible as Heath, and Heath's best friend? Or her married boyfriend? One of her five half siblings, they are currently suing her, so that isn't likely and she doesn't seem to have many friends. Then her half sister Claire, swoops in to put the pieces of Bailey back again. And while her first notion is that Claire is sucking up to get on her good side so she'll share her father's fortune, she soon finds that Claire is a godsend. She feeds her, takes care of her, stays with her, does her laundry, gets her to a therapist, and the two sisters develop a closeness that surprises Bailey, as they have never had any relationship in the past. Heath and Bailey are products of their father's third marriage, they had it all, while it seems their father forgot about his families before them. Bailey had a doting father, grew up in a beautiful house, had whatever she wanted, and his entire fortune was left to Heath and Bailey. But it seems that Claire has only Bailey's best interests at heart, is helping her to recover and Bailey becomes close to Claire's daughter Jade. Now Jade is a gem, little bit troublemaker, lot bit outspoken, but hilarious, and really a big hearted girl of 16, I'd love a Jade in my life.But Bailey is still having nightmares, there's phone calls in the night, flashbacks make her crumble, she can't move on; every man she sees "is that him?" She is losing all credibility with the police as she suggests suspect upon suspect to them, and her life as an investigator gets the best of her as she can't leave it alone, she gets herself in trouble imagining that it's this man or that, and calling the police constantly. And still with binoculars from her old life as an investigator, she stumbles upon some strange goings on in an apartment across the way. This book was so hard to put down, I wanted to devour it all right to the end and read it in a couple of days. Times I found myself reading faster, I had to know what was going to happen. Couple of things I correctly suspected, but a few surprising twists as well. I highly recommend this edge of your seat thriller

      Bailey, private investigator, is burtally beaten and raped. Her life is a mess. She tries to figure out the perp, but in the mean time is having a family dispute over her father's estate. The half brothers and half sister are sueing her. The half sister becomes friends with her and unknowingly tried to make Bailey and everyone else, including the police, think she is crazy. Interesting story.

      Thanks to Random House Pub for an ARC to read and review via Netgalley and librarything. Bailey Carpenter starts out the book as a kick ass investigator but after an investigation involving a dead beat dad she is attacked and left for dead. Her ordeal is horrible but I'm left wondering if her family is worse. Both her parents are dead and she is the product of her fathers final marriage. When her father passes he leaves millions to his final two kids but not his children from other families which is strange. So after the attack Bailey is afraid of everything now and can't leave her apartment or disaster seems to strike. It almost feels like she is going crazy but she has moments of lucid clarity. She starts watching one of the neighbors that fit the description of her attacker and becomes obsessed with him.I could not put this book down. I sat up until the wee hours of the morning just to finish it. The ending blew ME AWAY! Warning: rape situation and disturbing scene contained in book!

      Bailey Carpenter is a successful private investigator for a large law firm in Miami. While still reeling from the deaths of both of her parents, her life is fairly benign, until she is attacked one night while investigating a client.

      Suddenly, Bailey's life is turned upside down. She's unable to sleep, eat, or work. She spends her days (and nights) trapped inside her condo, suffering from crippling anxiety and nightmares, and wracked with guilt from the attack. She starts watching her neighbor in the building across the street using binoculars, but things get even more out of control when she realizes he may be watching her, too.

      First of all, a definite trigger warning that this book depicts a pretty brutal rape. It's tough to read about, and I would hate for anyone to pick up this novel without realizing its subject. I do applaud Fielding for trying to cover such a hard subject, though I'm not sure it's always accurately portrayed.

      The book gets off to a slow start - I almost put it down. It's a hard subject to read about, and Bailey is a little hard to like and understand at first. The storyline gets a bit incredulous, but it certainly picked up, and I tore through the second half of the book. It ties up a little easily - and I'm not sure I buy Bailey going from completely devastated to seemingly okay, but I appreciate Fielding trying to show how much rape can hurt and leave its victims feeling powerless.

      Overall, it's an interesting read and Bailey's niece, Jade, is a fun character. It would be great to see the two of them appear together again.

      I went into this book open-minded but not expecting too much where the book was concerned. I didn’t think that I would hate it though I wasn’t entirely sure that I was going to like it either. Books that focus merely on a character going through an emotional trauma can either be boring or lacking for the most part. But that book exceeded expectations. Bailey's struggle to deal with her rape felt very real and sucked you in; the fear that she felt knowing whoever attacked her was out there felt very visceral as well. While the ending was a bit lackluster in my opinion (the reveal of whom attacked her wasn’t the most satisfying but somehow seemed extremely real all the same) the book was exceedingly enjoyable and the trauma Bailey felt- both due to the ordeal and her family issues- was riveting. I read the book in one sitting so at the end of the day I would most definitely recommend this book. Because though the ending lacked a certain punch to it (or should I say twist?) it was a very real way for the story to end. And the process of getting there was a well written ride.

      After many fits and starts in the career choices department Bailey Carpenter has settled on being a private detective for an elite Miami law firm. She excels at her job and more importantly she really enjoys it – well most of the time – she could do without trying to catch errant spouses and deadbeat dads. It is on just such an assignment that the unthinkable happens. Bailey is on surveillance when suddenly she is attacked from behind, a pillowcase pulled over her head and she is brutally raped and beaten. Lucky to be alive she remembers very little about the actual attack and virtually nothing about her assailant, except that he was wearing Nike athletic shoes, his breath smelled of mouthwash and his words still play over and over in her head, “Tell me that you love me”.

      Her physical injuries are healing but the emotional ones are taking a little longer to scab over. Bailey cannot face going outside much less back to her job. She cannot bring herself to leave her apartment and fears she is beginning to lose her sanity. Every man she sees is her potential assailant, so even a simple elevator ride to the apartment gym is a nightmare.

      Her support system consists solely of her brother Heath, a frequently unemployed actor and very frequent drug user, until she gets a surprise visit from estranged half-sister and her teenaged niece. She and Claire have never been close but being a nurse, Claire swoops in and takes over Bailey’s life. Claire is ultimate caregiver, while her niece Jade is the epitome of a sassy uncensored teenager. Between the two of them running intervention and forcing her back into a semblance of reality Bailey seems to be getting her life back. Until one night a pair of binoculars gets them all into trouble. Is it possible someone has been watching Bailey all along and the attack was not random? Could he still be watching her?

      This book had me hooked from the first few pages. The plot itself was a good one and add to that the fact that I liked the characters, how could I not enjoy the book? I liked Bailey and found her reaction to what happened to her a believable accounting. I mean who wouldn’t want to hide from the world? I could feel her anxiety as she wandered around the apartment checking every nook and cranny holding a lethal sounding pair of scissors in her hand.

      Without giving anything away let me just say that despite the author’s cleverly disguised hints throughout the whole book (easy to see now that I’ve read it all) I was quite astonished when the rapist’s identity finally came to light, so well-done Ms. Fielding, but even better was the second twist that totally caught me off guard. As I turned the last page and closed the book I was nodding my head and thinking that I should have seen it coming. I’m glad this book ended up on my shelf. I enjoyed it very much.

      Bailey Carpenter is a smart, strong, independent woman who works as a private investigator for a large law firm. Right from the beginning I really liked her character! One night, while on a routine stakeout Bailey is jumped from behind and brutally attacked and injured. Despite all of her years of training and experience she was powerless to fight back & could only give the police the slightest of information to go on regarding her attacker.

      Overcome by a constant state of fear and anxiety, Bailey is now unable to leave her apartment and spends most of her nights in a sleepless panic. Her only solace comes in the form of Claire, her older half-sister, and Claire’s teenage daughter, Jade. They show up several times a week to offer support and a reprieve from Bailey’s constant loneliness. To pass the time, and in some ways to keep her sanity, Bailey begins observing the lives of other people through her binoculars. Her attention becomes drawn to a peculiar yet handsome man living in the apartment building across from her bedroom window. She begins watching him, immersing herself into his sordid life, she’s disgusted & terrified by what she’s sees and yet she can’t seem to stop. The more she watches him, the more she begins to wonder…….. is he watching her too?

      When Bailey sees this enigmatic man do something suspiciously violent, she calls the police. They pay him a visit, search around a bit, yet they report back that nothing happened; they couldn’t find a single shred of evidence to back up Bailey’s story of what she saw. Since Bailey’s the narrator of this story you become lost in her perceptions of what is or isn’t happening, you start wondering right along with her if she’s going crazy and losing touch with reality, or is there truly something or someone to truly be afraid of. I absolutely loved the whole Rear Window vibe to this book, it’s what drew me in and kept me reading!

      Someone Is Watching was such a hard book for me to rate and review. There were so many aspects to this story that I absolutely loved, other aspects left me scratching my head. I don’t mind a story that’s paced slowly, especially in a psychological thriller but there were too many pages here dealing with Bailey wandering around, blaming every man she saw on the street as her attacker. The scenes that worked best were the ones in which she was watching her neighbor; trying to figure out if what she saw was reality, some sort of PTSD or herself slowly going crazy. I wish the book was more focused around this storyline and cut out a bunch of the rest. When I noticed myself getting bored with what she was doing outside her apartment I kept wishing she’d go home and watch her neighbor to see if he was doing anything creepy or suspicious!! There are several mysteries to figure out here; who is Bailey’s attacker, what’s really going on with the mystery man she’s watching, whether or not these two things are connected and if so, why? I felt this story could have been way creepier if it was told entirely from the inside of Bailey’s apartment with her sister, niece and mystery man her only links to the outside world. In the end there were too many missed opportunities for this book to have been great and I was a little let down.

      Overall I liked this book; only felt it could have been better. I would recommend this to people who like slower paced mysteries or haven’t read other books with a similar plot before. I really enjoyed Joy Fielding’s writing style and would absolutely read another book by her!

      I have read this author many times before and have always enjoyed her books, and this one was no different.

      Bailey Carpenter is an investigator for a law firm, and while she’s on a stakeout, she is attacked and brutally raped. Her life will never be the same. She sees her attacker in every man she meets, so she rarely leaves her apartment anymore.

      She’s also in the middle of a lawsuit with her half siblings who were left out of their father’s will, and has a full brother who is stoned or drunk most of the time. So she didn’t have much keeping her anchored as it was.

      She starts spying on someone in a neighboring apartment and begins to see things that she’s told aren’t real, over and over again by the police who seem to think she’s just crying wolf each time she calls to say she saw something. She randomly accuses men of being her attacker, even though she never saw his face. Is she going crazy?

      Bailey tries to determine if she’s really going crazy or if someone is trying to make her seem that way and if so, how can she prove it? And who is it? Is it tied to the rape, or something else altogether. The police don’t believe her since she’s cried wolf so many times, but she has to take back control of her life and find out for herself why this is happening to her so she starts investigating on her own.

      This book is a page turner and kept me guessing right from the start.

Some of her over-the-top actions belie her supposed smart investigative skills; readers might find themselves wanting to scold her or giving up on her before the resolutions play out. While most things are nicely tied up by the ending, readers are likely to wonder about the catalyst that set this whole story in motion. Nevertheless, the author has created an atmosphere so real that Bailey’s anxiety is palpable, her vulnerability almost painful. And Jade is a delightful character; her growing relationship with Bailey is a highlight of this story.
