- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Must read!! Francine Rivers is the epitome of Christian fiction, and this is one of her best. She brings Ancient Rome to life and weaves a tale of tragedy, courage, forgiveness, loyalty, sacrifice, and love. Beautifully written, the plot and characters rope you in and keep you there all the way through. Make sure to continue to the second book in the series, An Echo in the Darkness, because the story does not end here. I’ve read these books multiple times in 20 years, I always see or understand something new each time.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Absolutely outstanding ?My favourite Francine Rivers series for sure? Read it many times, now love to sew whilst someone reads me the story? Vivid scenes of the decadence and wretchedness of the Roman Empire… now, so like the scenes we see everyday… lions replaced by movies on our lounge room screens… So many parallels with today… Please, help us Jesus… to be more like Hadassah???

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The best book I’ve ever read in the time after the destruction of the Jerusalem temple. The main character serves as an example for me to imitate.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book keeps you intrigued from beginning to end and evokes a myriad of emotions. I found myself pausing at intervals to pray for those still in slavery and for the persecuted church because of how very real the characters felt to me. I am still sobbing at how it ends and I'm clearly not a pro at writing reviews, but this book is amazing. I'll highly recommend it for lovers of historic romance or just lovers of good books in general

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Second time reading, Spirit-filled and captivating. Absolutely love this book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is the second time I am listening to this book. Haddasah's faith blossomed through trials. How many times have we avoided trials because it feels uncomfortable? Whereas the Bible says 'count it all joy when ye fall into diverse trials and temptations' Oh Lord help my faith!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I knew this book was in the top tier of Christian Historical Fiction, but I wasn't prepared for it.
It starts a bit slow but after pushing through the first few chapters I was utterly enthralled. This book made me feel all the raw emotions, and the ending.... Well I'll let you find out for yourself.
I loved how every person's perspective was shown, not in the "chapter per pov" style, but short and relative snippets of their thoughts in the moment.
Hadasah was so wholesome and her inner and outer struggles absolutely relatable.
I also loved the time period, she knew the apostles! I mean... I sort of forget they had a life after Christ, and this was done so perfectly.
The Narration was also fantastic!
I 100℅ recommend this book. It is quite hectic at times,(no sugar coating here) but it is a great representation of life in thriving Rome.
Thank you Recorded Books and Scribd for this life-changing performance.<3 - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I LOVE the way you have woven God`s plan for salvation into the story. Sooooo very well done, as only you can do. Keep up the great job. I`ve read this book before, and it`s just as good the second time aeound.

Oh, God !! what can I say, this book is sooo real. This is so true, God is real. Jesus is real. Not believing in him doesn't change the fact. What will I say in front of people like Hadassah and many other martyrs who died for his love!! This made me cry , may God have mercy on me and give me the faith and strength to "let go of what I can not keep and hold on to what I will never loose" - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It brings encouragement to strive for God's approval than the world's. Not the first time to read it, always brighter.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5What an amazing, compelling story! Hadasseh - a little bit over the top but a great example of faith. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5What a beautiful story. I love the way the author handled the many dynamic emotions and situations that the main characters found themselves in. I cant wait to start the next book in the series!

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is one of my favorite historical fiction novels of all time.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5One of my favorite series ever! This is my first time listening to the audiobook, have read the books 3-4x before. I love this author & her books, but this one feels different.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This review should really be a 3 but I don’t want to discourage anyone from reading it. The narrator is a terrible fit. I don’t know who thought, “you know what this Christian romance series is missing?! That deep/dangerous voice guy who intros action adventure trailers!” He’s a fine narrator, just a ridiculous pick for this.
The story: it’s alternately good, convicting, deeply encouraging but also redundant, long winded, predictable and cheesy. Some chapters I would describe as beautiful. Some repetitive and unnecessary.
This story encouraged my faith as an adult teen during a dark and painful time- Hadassah was a model to me, showing me how to withstand suffering, isolation, and persecution. I read it now over 15 years later and I love her still and am still encouraged but I’d like give the book a good cleansing edit ?? - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5After having read this book for the first time over fifteen years ago, it was amazing to read it again. This time, experiencing it quite differently as an adult.
I love Francine Rivers’ writing and must admit that this series is possibly her best, well at least everything that she’s written that is “period” fiction.
It is such a special book and reminds one of their sweet love for the Lord, which is a gift, to be honest. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5ABSOLUTELY the best Christian fiction I have ever read/listened to (and my audiobook library tops somewhere over 1,000!!) and possibly, the best of all time! I’ve listened to the series three times and can’t wait to listen again!!! The storyline is beyond masterful! Filled with suspense, romance, nail biting intensity and of course, the rich, historically accurate details that Francine Rivers is so famous for. Those details bring it to life, make it 3D and provide an education about history-that makes me sound smarter than I am when re-telling the story, haha. I mean, how could it NOT be the best book ever?!
* My only complaint is that she hasn’t written more using these characters and this story line : (((
