About this audiobook

Orange Is the New Black meets Walter Dean Myer’s Monster in this gritty, twisty, and haunting debut by Tiffany D. Jackson about a girl convicted of murder seeking the truth while surviving life in a group home.

Mary B. Addison killed a baby.

Allegedly. She didn’t say much in that first interview with detectives, and the media filled in the only blanks that mattered: a white baby had died while under the care of a churchgoing black woman and her nine-year-old daughter. The public convicted Mary and the jury made it official. But did she do it?

There wasn’t a point to setting the record straight before, but now she’s got Ted—and their unborn child—to think about. When the state threatens to take her baby, Mary’s fate now lies in the hands of the one person she distrusts the most: her Momma. No one knows the real Momma. But does anyone know the real Mary?

Masterfully written, this book is both riveting and heartbreaking all at the same time. Ms. Jackson’s writing gives an unapologetic understanding the behavior of both adult and children dealing with trauma. Absolutely one of my favorite books!

I have just found Tiffany Jackson. I’m smitten, challenged, shocked and affirmed with her storytelling. This particular story, painful and raw, peels through layer after layer of character grief to arrive at a terrible, wonderful truth. Please read this book....and you’ll fall in love with her honest stories.

So many twists and turns. Just when I thought I knew a person— damn. This was completely riveting and I felt so empathetic towards the main character, Mary. I loved the little quirks about the book that made it unique, like how she kept mentioning that she committed the crime ‘allegedly’, how she referred to her daydreaming as ‘Alyssa-ing’ and the excerpts from psychology books and interviews about the case. Don’t miss out on this incredible read.

Compelling and well written. Excellent narration. A bit repetitive but after conclusion I understand why certain points were harped on. Not sure I felt closure at end and there was a bit of confusion as well which made me want to reread book to ensure I understand subversive clues. Feelings I’m left with are hard to describe - partly impressed with authors style while partly feeling story isn’t finished.

Loved the book for these main two reasons: a profound explanation into the juvenile criminal justice system. The main character, Mary is beyond intriguing. I was rooting for her every step of the way.

I really don’t know how I feel about this book. I’m left feeling underwhelmed and I normally never feel like that about a Tiffany D. Jackson book. It wasn’t a mystery it was just an unfinished ending.

Tragic and sad. So awful what mental illness, neglect, poverty, abuse and grief can do to people. Our entire criminal system sucks. Our social system sucks. The way we "take care" of  kids, the elderly, and the mentally ill sucks. This book brings all that to life in the story of a 16-yo black girl who has been locked up since she was 9 for killing a 3-month old white baby.

This is the second book I've read by Tiffany Jackson, and by far the BEST book I’ve read this year !!! It's EXTREMELY eye opening pertaining to the juvenile detection system. Mary was 9 years old when she was sentenced to "baby jail" than a halfway house at 16. It draws you in and keeps you. The ending took me completely by surprise, but it's not like I kept wondering about Mary.
