About this audiobook

The enchanting story of a bookshop, its grieving owner, a supportive literary community, and the extraordinary power of books to heal the heart

Nightingale Books, nestled on the main street in an idyllic little village, is a dream come true for book lovers—a cozy haven and welcoming getaway for the literary-minded locals. But owner Emilia Nightingale is struggling to keep the shop open after her beloved father's death, and the temptation to sell is getting stronger. The property developers are circling, yet Emilia's loyal customers have become like family, and she can't imagine breaking the promise she made to her father to keep the store alive.

There's Sarah, owner of the stately Peasebrook Manor, who has used the bookshop as an escape in the past few years, but it now seems there's a very specific reason for all those frequent visits. Next is roguish Jackson, who, after making a complete mess of his marriage, now looks to Emilia for advice on books for the son he misses so much. And the forever shy Thomasina, who runs a pop-up restaurant for two in her tiny cottage—she has a crush on a man she met in the cookbook section, but can hardly dream of working up the courage to admit her true feelings.

Enter the world of Nightingale Books for a serving of romance, long-held secrets, and unexpected hopes for the future—and not just within the pages on the shelves. How to Find Love in a Bookshop is the delightful story of Emilia, the unforgettable cast of customers whose lives she has touched, and the books they all cherish.

Though the plot evolves from a sad death which deeply affects the main characters, it moves merrily along in familiar sad to glad directions. With the title, readers will of course expect at least one good and dramatic Happy Ending.Unfortunately, there are too many falling neatly into place and leaving no opportunity for a sequel.Bookstore flooding was too much of a plot stretch - hard to believe no one noticed this possibility before...And, where is THE famous Nightingale BAY WINDOW for the cover?!? This one is flat.

When Emilia’s father dies, she inherits his bookshop in a picturesque Cotswold village. She’s unsure if she wants to make the bookshop her life -- let alone if she’ll be able to make a profit. The shop’s customers include: Thomasina, a lonely cookery teacher; Bea, a bored new mother who misses her London job; Jackson, who works for a property developer who wants to buy the bookshop; and Sarah, the lady of the manor who knew Emilia’s father better than anyone knows. This doesn’t shy away from Emilia’s grief but otherwise it is very much a cosy, optimistic story in which friends are made, relationships are mended, mistakes are overcome and everything turns out all right. Which definitely has its appeal. I wanted just a few more sharp edges -- or else slightly more uncertainty -- so that everyone’s happy endings felt more realistic. I keep brainstorming all the ways the book could have managed that. (Top of my list would be how Emilia finds out about, and reacts to, Sarah’s secrets.)Although I didn’t love this book, there was a lot I liked about it, like Jackson reading Finn Family Moomintroll to his son, and Emilia’s experiences playing cello in a local string quartet. A movie, please? So that was why people read. Because books explained things: how you thought, and how you behaved, and made you realise you were not alone in doing what you did or feeling what you felt.

A heartwarming story in cosy settings, not only about Emilia, who wants to keep going her father's bookshop, Nightingale Books, after his death, but also about the other people living in the village. They all have different stories, but they are all somehow linked in Emilias bookshop.
A really enjoyable read about people you like, with a special main character, Emilia.

Books are many things to many people: entertainment and enlightenment, comfort and companionship, suspenseful thrills, romance, and a certain satisfaction of the soul that can't be found anywhere else. Bookshops and libraries, now bobbing like little islands in the ever-encroaching digital seas, offer a personal connection for book lovers--a face-to-face rapport for those who drink words and keep reaching for books like candy in a dish. "How to Find Love in a Bookshop", by Veronica Henry, is a charmingly poignant tale of "Nightingale Books", long a treasured haven for its loyal patrons and now threatened by the pressures of property developers after the owner's death. Emilia Nightingale made a promise to her father to keep the bookstore open and keep the "family" of customers well looked-after. Those customers may as well be book characters themselves--each has a unique story to tell, and there are surprises and secrets and unpredictable outcomes all around. Can Emilia find a way to craft a happy ending for them all? Read on, and you will be enchanted by this captivating tale which celebrates the love of books, all things books.Review Copy Gratis Pamela Dorman Books via Blogging for Books

Lovely happily ever after story but not schmaltzy. Takes place in a village in the Cotswolds where a daughter returns from abroad as her father is dying and then takes over his bookshop. Filled with a wonderful cast of characters, trying to find their way to happiness. Which they seem to do on Christmas Eve. Loved it.

How to Find Love in a Bookshop by Veronica Henry is a 2018 Penguin Books publication. It goes without saying that any book about books will appeal to me. A bookshop with a regular clientele, each with their own story, a few well- guarded secrets, and a healthy dose of sweet romance and you have an irresistible combination. When Emilia inherits her father’s bookshop, she decides to brush off any attempts to persuade her to accept a buyout. But, unbeknownst to her, there is a plot afoot to make sure she does just that. In the meantime, Emilia gets reacquainted with Peasebrook, and works hard to keep the bookshop many rely on open for business. First off, the setting: The English Cotswold – enough said. Then we add “Bookshop”- enough said. Then add in secrets, and multiple love stories- well, you get the idea. This is the kind of book that is hard to find much fault with. It's just to charming and sweet. It might even play well as a Hallmark Channel Movie. It’s THAT kind of book. Most anyone can enjoy this novel, anytime, anywhere. It’s the perfect type of story to enjoy while lying in a hammock, under an umbrella at the beach, or sitting beside a cozy fire, or curled up in your favorite reading nook with a nice glass of wine or a cup of tea. I loved all those wonderful romances, Emilia and her crush on the 'cookbook' guy. Dillion and his unrequited love, and Jane, who finally reconnects with the guy who broke her heart many years ago, for starters. But, even with all that romance in the air, there are sinister forces at work, and Emilia will be faced with nearly insurmountable odds, which makes selling out more and more tempting every day. Obviously, this is a very light, easy to read story, one that exudes charm and warmth. This is a book meant for book lovers who already know the importance of bookshops and the magic that can be found there. 4 stars

How to Find Love in a Bookshop is #instalove! I just loved this book. The book was made that much better by the characters. Everyone that I met was enjoyable. There wasn't one person that I didn't really like. Although, Emilia's father made a short appearance, I felt the love he had for Emilia as well as the bookshop. I am so happy that Emilia realized the importance of the bookshop and the joy that the shop brought everyone. Books really are magical. Example when Jackson started the tradition of reading with his son. I could not read this book fast enough but at the same time I wanted to savor every moment as well. I finished this book in a matter of several hours. I look forward to reading the next book by this author.

An ensemble romance in which all characters get paired off happily. You know pretty early on who is going to find love with who, but it's a relaxing read watching them all get there. The bookshop is a common factor to all the characters. Yes, it's unlikely that so many people would volunteer to help the book shop in different ways, but who cares. It's nice to read about people being helpful.

When Emilia Nightingale's father passes away after a very brief illness, Emilia finds herself back in the small village of Peasebrook. Emilia always loved living there but finds taking over her father's bookshop, Nightingale Books, more of a challenge than expected particularly in the wake of his death. However, the whole village is there to support her and as she finds her way, the villagers who come into her shop find more than just books.Quiet, charming, and sweet, this novel is a lovely read that allows you to drop into the life of a small English village. With a sizable cast of characters whose lives intertwine over the course of the book, all of them are compelling and believable and you'll find yourselves rooting that all of them find their happy endings. Excellent, cozy reading.

How to Find Love in a Bookshop is my first Veronica Henry book for quite a while. I'm always drawn to books with shops in them and a bookshop is just a dream for me. The book is set around Emilia Nightingale and the bookshop that her late father, Julius, set up in the Cotswolds. It's a quaint place, full of charm, but it's a place that people come to spend time, not always to buy books. Emilia has to decide whether to keep it going. There are also a large cast of other characters, linked with Emilia or the bookshop in some way. This is a really heart-warming and feel-good story. It's light and easy to read but still explores depth of feeling. I really liked Emilia and also Thomasina, the local cookery teacher. There are quite a few characters to keep track of but all of them have interesting stories to bring into the mix.I hope not to leave it so long until I read another Veronica Henry book. I liked this one a lot.

This book appealed to me because it centred around a bookshop. Emilia has come to the bookshop because her father Julius has died. The bookshop is the heart of the community and Emilia is struggling to keep it going.I should have really expected this book to be sugurary. The characters are all connected somehow to the shop, with their own little stories. The book was nice and quirky and not at all taxing. As I am a big crime fan it did make a nice change. The trouble with these type of books is that for me they don't really go anywhere. I read a book similar by Jojo Moyes about a shop where characters stories interwinded. That book was similar as in again not much happened. However there was something compelling and I wanted to see if the character's had their happy ending.A sweet little book for a change but not really my genre.

Fun, light reading. Set in a small English town, this book tells the story of a bookshop that impacts the lives of many local residents. The intertwining stories make for good reading & all end with a happy enough resolution.

When Emilia Nightgale's father Julius dies, she inherits Nightingale Books in the small English town of Peasebrook. Discovering that the shop was in more financial trouble than she realized, she struggles to stay afloat and finds out just how much the shop - and her father - meant to the small town.Peasebrook is a small English town with a lot of heart and several characters, many of whom essentially have their own vignettes in each chapter. The bookshop is the center of it all, as Emilia does her best to cope with her grief and her new job running it. This was a charming sort of read you may enjoy if you liked Major Pettigrew's Last Stand or The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry.

I do love my mysteries, but every so often I crave a sweet, feel-good read with a happy ending. How to Find Love in a Bookshop by Veronica Henry was all of the above and the perfect read for a lazy Sunday.Nightingale Books has been a fixture in the village of Peasedale for almost thirty years. "After all, a town without a bookshop was a town without a heart." Julius, the owner, is just as beloved by the residents. When he passes away, his daughter Emilia returns home to take over the shop she grew up in."Millions - there must be so many millions - of words. All those words, and the pleasure they had provided for people over the years: escape, entertainment, education...He had changed minds. He had changed lives. It was up to her to carry on his works so he would live on...."Well, starting off with a bookshop at the heart of a tale had me hooked without turning a page! And then I met the inhabitants of Peasedale and became totally immersed in Henry's imaginings. Her characters were so warm and real. They're people you would like to have in your circle of friends. Many of them are holding on to secrets, running from or wishing for love and happiness - and some of them don't even realize it....Henry's emotional descriptions of her characters and their wants and wishes was very well done. The memories of Julius had me reaching for a tissue more than once. I could only hope that they all would find what they needed by the end of the book. There are lots of miscommunications, missed cues and missteps along the way. But, this being a chick lit type of book, we know we can expect some happy endings by the final pages....and the journey there was so very enjoyable. There were so many great book quotes and references throughout the novel. Bibliophiles will appreciate them all. "There's a book for everyone, even if they don't think there is. A book that reaches in a grabs your soul."I really enjoyed How to Find Love in a Bookshop - it was charming, sweet and a lovely read. Five stars for pure escapist enjoyment reading. I'll be checking out what else Henry has written. Fans of Jenny Colgan would enjoy Veronica Henry.

Mitford meets soap opera full of cliche & stereotype with a syrupy sweet ending at Christmas. The story coming together through the bookstore has some charm. Lots of references to books, cheeses, recipes & Designer fashion. I finished it after plodding through the first third of the pages.

This light romantic comedy is perfect for curling up on the couch, especially now that Daylight Savings Time is over.In this charming story, Emilia Nightingale has returned home from Hong Kong to be with her beloved father, Julius, at his end. Julius owned and operated Nightingale Books, “a cozy haven and welcoming getaway for the literary-minded locals,” of whom there are plentyEmilia loves the bookshop as much as the readers in the quaint English village an hour or so outside of London. She knew her father was having a hard time making ends, but she had no idea how bad his finances were or what a mess they were.As she struggles to decide whether or not to sell, the lovable cast of character bring her their own unique reasons why the bookshop should stay open. “There's Sarah, owner of the stately Peasebrook Manor, who has used the bookshop as an escape in the past few years, but it now seems there’s a very specific reason for all those frequent visits. Next is roguish Jackson, who, after making a complete mess of his marriage, now looks to Emilia for advice on books for the son he misses so much. And the forever shy Thomasina, who runs a pop-up restaurant for two in her tiny cottage—she has a crush on a man she met in the cookbook section, but can hardly dream of working up the courage to admit her true feelings.”I couldn’t put this one down. How to Find Love in a Bookshop gets 5 out of 5 stars in Julie’s world.

How to Find Love in a Bookshop by Veronica HenrySource: NetgalleyMy Rating: 5/5 starsEmilia never once suspected her father’s beloved bookstore, Nightingale Books wasn’t and isn’t a smashing success. Given the number of people who come through on a daily and weekly basis and her father’s lack of communication on the topic, Emilia is as shocked by the state of the bookstore as she is by her beloved father’s death. For Emilia, it wasn’t supposed to be this way. Oh, sure, Nightingale Books is her inheritance and some day she fully intended to return home and run the shop in her father’s stead, but not this early, not this soon. As we well know, Fate is a fickle b*tch and when Emilia is forced to return home to her dying father’s bedside, she is shocked to find just how much of a mess he has left her. With nothing to do, but get on with the living and the working, Emilia doggedly decides to right the ship and make Nightingale Books her father’s legacy more than just her inheritance. The instant she is back in the shop, Emilia is surrounded by love and support from the long-time customers who were also her father’s friends. The men and women of her small hometown are thoughtful and kind, willing to lend a hand, and encouraging of Emilia’s efforts to get the bookshop back on track. There’s her best-friend and accountant whose efforts are geared toward the numbers, there’s the wizened old woman who retired quite well-off and is more than willing to donate financially to the cause, and there’s the wasting her talents stay at home mom who’s perfectly situated to help Emilia re-launch Nightingale Books. In her personal life, there’s the return of the beautiful musician whose interest at first seems totally professional (his group needs a new cellist!) and there’s the married woman/manor owner whose life was, unbeknownst to all, intimately linked to Emilia’s father and the bookstore. With so much love, support, and enthusiasm, it’s hard for Emilia to turn her back on the old bookstore, but there are so many obstacles to overcome and grief is a powerful thing. With every gain/victory, Emilia also experiences a setback, whether it be personally or professionally. Some days the setbacks are manageable and others, well, giving up just seems like the best option. What’s more, Emilia’s life isn’t the only life tied to Nightingale Books, and as she experiences the roller coaster ride, so do her customers/friends. Each experience and each event that occurs in every character’s life is somehow tied to Nightingale Books and losing the store would mean losing a piece of their own lives for everyone in town. The Bottom Line: This is one of those books where I can’t quite wrap my head around the lower star rating on Goodreads. I absolutely adored this book, it’s intricate relationships, it’s complicated design, and its ultimately triumphant message about managing grief. Emilia is young to be carrying such a heavy burden, but because of her location, and her history with the people of the town, she has a built-in support system and that system comes shining through in this read! As all the help is rolling in for Emilia, there’s also a great deal going on in the background with those same characters who are helping the young woman. I love how intricately tied together the plot, sub-plot, major and minor characters are. Though not everyone knows and/or interacts with each other, they are all tied to the book store and Emilia which makes for a much deeper, more involved, and thoroughly enjoyable read. I’m adding this one to my highly recommend list and hope y’all enjoy this one as much as I did!
