About this audiobook

Winner of the 2020 Audio Publishers Association Lifetime Achievement Award

From legendary master storyteller Stephen King, a riveting story about “an ordinary man in an extraordinary condition rising above hatred” (The Washington Post) and bringing the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine together—a “joyful, uplifting” (Entertainment Weekly) tale about finding common ground despite deep-rooted differences, “the sign of a master elevating his own legendary game yet again” (USA TODAY).

Although Scott Carey doesn’t look any different, he’s been steadily losing weight. There are a couple of other odd things, too. He weighs the same in his clothes and out of them, no matter how heavy they are. Scott doesn’t want to be poked and prodded. He mostly just wants someone else to know, and he trusts Doctor Bob Ellis.

In the small town of Castle Rock, the setting of many of King’s most iconic stories, Scott is engaged in a low grade—but escalating—battle with the lesbians next door whose dog regularly drops his business on Scott’s lawn. One of the women is friendly; the other, cold as ice. Both are trying to launch a new restaurant, but the people of Castle Rock want no part of a gay married couple, and the place is in trouble. When Scott finally understands the prejudices they face—including his own—he tries to help. Unlikely alliances, the annual foot race, and the mystery of Scott’s affliction bring out the best in people who have indulged the worst in themselves and others.

“Written in masterly Stephen King’s signature translucent…this uncharacteristically glimmering fairy tale calls unabashedly for us to rise above our differences” (Booklist, starred review). Elevation is an antidote to our divisive culture, an “elegant whisper of a story” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review), “perfect for any fan of small towns, magic, and the joys and challenges of doing the right thing” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

Editor's Note

Timely, upbeat, and eerie…

After decades being one of the biggest writers of our time, King continues to tread new ground in this surprisingly slim, uplifting novel. Filled with more hope than horror, it’s a melancholic, supernatural story about rising above differences and divides.

Two stories had nothing to do with each other. Disappointed.

A charming tale of humanity, no real horror here, just regular people in unusual circumstances. King’s narration was top-notch. I enjoyed this.

Very light and fluffy. Not bad, but I had a hard time seeing the point of “Elevation.” A cute conceit, but that was all. As for “Laurie”...again, hard to see this as anything but average.

When I first heard this book I was surprised that it was a Stephen King book. I'm so use to his horrors and instead I got a whole different sense. It was uplifting and nice. I would have thought he wasn't the real author not his style but the book is never the less pretty awesome! I liked it and enjoyed hearing it from King himself.

    but unexpected, was satisfying.

These stories fell flat for me. The concept of Elevation was interesting and sort of reminded me of something Joe Hill might have come up with (thinking Strange Weather here). Unfortunately it felt very rushed in terms of how relationships evolved and didn't go very deep into Scott's experiences.

Laurie was an ok little short but not my cup of tea.

This audiobook contains 2 stories, Elevation and Laurie. I was happy to listen to it because it was narrated by Stephen King himself.

Elevation reminded me of a book King wrote years ago, Thinner. In both stories, an overweight man loses a great deal of weight. In Thinner, the weight loss was retribution for an insult, while in Elevation there was no explanation for the condition. I have to admit that Thinner had a more interesting plot than Elevation. Thinner also had a delishisly evil ending while Elevation was entirely character-driven. And, as Forrest Gump would say, that`s all I have to say about that.

Laurie is about the relationship between an old widower and a puppy. There is an adventure with an alligator. I`m not entirely sure what the point was about this story, except possibly how the relationship between a dog and a man can add meaning to a life that has become meaningless.
