About this audiobook

From international bestselling author Marc Levy comes a witty and beguiling novel of one woman’s unexpected journey to follow her destiny.

Alice Pendelbury believes everything in her life is pretty much in order—from her good friends to her burgeoning career. But even Alice has to admit it’s been an odd week. Not only has her belligerent neighbor, Mr. Daldry, suddenly become a surprisingly agreeable confidant, but he’s encouraging her to take seriously the fortune-teller who told her that only by traveling to Turkey can Alice meet the most important person in her life.

What’s more, the peculiarly insistent Mr. Daldry has even agreed to finance Alice’s trip—one that against all reason seems to be predestined. It’s on this journey, crazy from the outset and strangely irresistible, that Alice will find out that nothing in her life is real, that her past is not true, and that the six people she’s about to encounter will shape her future in ways she could never have dreamed.

Revised edition: Previously published as L’étrange voyage de Monsieur Daldry, this edition of The Strange Journey of Alice Pendelbury includes editorial revisions.

This story was so well-written. It had twists and turns that kept me wanting to know what was around the next corner. It had such a clever plot and well-developed characters. The audio book’s narrator had a wonderful voice and although there were both male and female characters, she didn’t use hugely different voices for them, which can sometimes be so distracting. There was just enough difference that it was easy to tell who was speaking while maintaining a wonderful cadence to the narration. Kudos to the author. I will be looking for more books he has written.

Although the writing seemed good, I couldn’t get past the first chapter due to the narration. Her voice is beautiful but the narration was too soothing and yet too dramatic. Every sentence was drawn out. It was annoying.

A wonderful story! I was enthralled with the characters, the mystery, and the historical details. The author paints an evocative mental image, giving the book that "sense of place". The narration was a little irritating in that almost all of the speech is a little breathless, dreamlike, whispery. Otherwise, perfect.

This tale was beautifully written and masterfully performed. I was initially hesitant when the credits state that it had been translated, but was soon convinced the translation hadn’t mangled the beauty of the authors original work. Maybe the original IS better…. I’ll never know. This version is lovely.

it was wit-fully written that became utterly interesting, I believe It was originally written in french and was translated in english so I guess we owe one too the translator after all. Aha! ? it was so hilarious that sometimes sarcasm was so on point in full wits ?? a little drama ofcourse, yeaa I did shed some lightly ball of tears in the corners HAHAHA! but non the less it was ‘merveilleux’ as what they say in french ? oh! and one more thing though the setting was 1950’s I love it how it doesn’t weird me out when the writer chooses to use modern slangs like ‘brunch’ ‘thirdwheel’ ‘KJ’ etc., I know it sound so inappropriate given the year setting but I don’t know it doesn’t feel unnatural at all thats how beautifully and cleverly it was composed you’ll never make a deal out of it you’ll just enjoy all the way the strange journey of Alice Pendelbury ?

It’s rare to find a book that is unpredictable, yet every time I thought I had figured out what would happen, I was pleasantly surprised by an unexpected twist that added another layer of complexity & intrigue to the story and it’s rich vivid characters. Highly entertaining and captures your attention immediately. The way it is vividly descriptive in it’s beautiful attention to detail allows the reader to picture a wide variety of wonderful places in which the story unfolds.

I enjoyed the story's twists and slow reveal of story and build of intrigue. The only thing I did not like is that the VO artist whispers the last couple of words of 90% of the sentences, which I found to be, not only be annoying, but to give an unintentional melodramatic affect that killed a lot of dramatic moments by turning them almost comic. If you are one of those people who sits and listens to ASMR, you may like this odd affect in the VO. Otherwise, I really enjoyed the story.

What a brilliant book. Excellent narration. Great characters. As a Turk, it was lovely to hear the descriptions of Istanbul, and painful to hear about a particularly horrible point in our history. Highly recommend this book.

I rarely give a book five stars, but I truly loved this story and didn't want it to end. That's saying a lot considering that I didn't think I would care for the book when I first read the synopsis, but I thought I'd give it a chance. The narration was excellent as well. This was my first Marc Levy book, but certainly will not be the last.

Starts off very slow but it’s a very nice story of friendship. The ending is great and it really picks up about halfway through

Very predictable, and yet confusing. I knew where it was going from the very beginning. Still, the plot line manages to make no sense at all. Not a fave.

It was interesting. It was obvious how the ending was going to play out but I wanted her to end up with the other guy, not him.
