About this audiobook
“A beautifully told story about justice, sisterhood, and warrior women.” —Shea Ernshaw, New York Times bestselling author of The Wicked Deep
“Epic in the truest sense.” —Quill and Quire
An Ember in the Ashes meets Three Dark Crowns in this lush debut fantasy novel about a girl who disguises herself as a boy to join a secret group of warriors that ride phoenixes into battle.
I had a sister, once…
In a world ruled by fierce warrior queens, a grand empire was built upon the backs of Phoenix Riders—legendary heroes who soared through the sky on wings of fire—until a war between two sisters ripped it all apart.
I promised her the throne would not come between us.
Sixteen years later, Veronyka is a war orphan who dreams of becoming a Phoenix Rider from the stories of old. After a shocking betrayal from her controlling sister, Veronyka strikes out alone to find the Riders—even if that means disguising herself as a boy to join their ranks.
But it is a fact of life that one must kill or be killed. Rule or be ruled.
Just as Veronyka finally feels like she belongs, her sister turns up and reveals a tangled web of lies between them that will change everything. And meanwhile, the new empire has learned of the Riders’ return and intends to destroy them once and for all.
Sometimes the title of queen is given. Sometimes it must be taken.
Crown of Feathers is an epic fantasy about love’s incredible power to save—or to destroy. Interspersed throughout is the story of Avalkyra Ashfire, the last Rider queen, who would rather see her empire burn than fall into her sister’s hands.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Wish I could give it a higher score loved the folklore type writing but was very slow building and once it got good it was a blink and it was over. Will still give the series another shot

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A phenomenal book, keeps you interested all the way through. Plays with the cliches of gender but not quite in the pathetic and annoying way you usually see. Really looking forward to reading the second book. The readers do a really good job as well, though the multiple readers trips you up at first

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I loved it. It had so many twists I always had my mind thinking and got me very emotional at times. I'm hoping Heart of Flames will give me the same reactions if not better.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Absolutely amazing! I don’t think I need it say much because many of the previous reviews relay my own thoughts. I really enjoyed the concept, every beat of the story felt fleshed out, the emotional blows were earned, and gosh darn it were there some emotional blows. This is one of the those rare occasions where the main character is not my favorite in the beginning, but she grows and I actually end up liking her by the end (normally I hate them the whole time, or I’m obsessed with them the whole time). We start with our MC being naive, but she has heart and she is kind. She finds her courage and her independence and I was truly rooting for her by the end. Even Val, who is painted as a monster since the beginning is one of those characters that I know to be a villain from the start, but who I desperately want the best for. I also really loved the intermittent history bits, by the end they weave together and you’re going “WOOOOAH” like a classroom of small children.
I agree with everyone else - at first the multiple narrators are kind of jarring, but you grow to love them all. Which also upsets me a bit because there are some books with some truly subpar narrators - don’t get me wrong, I understand the art is taxing and it is no easy feat - BUT every single one of these narrators were great and fit their role so well. This is the first time I can say I genuinely enjoyed each narrator, instead of the usual having to slog through one POV due to bad narration (looking at you Serpent & Dove, Reed could NOT read with proper inflection).
SO go forth readers and read this book, it’s action packed, heart wrenching, and beautifully written. Also, phoenixes! You NEVER get those in books, so it was super fun having a new animal sidekick I had yet to enjoy. - Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5It is so incredibly slow to start. I just could not keep going with it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great YA fantasy book! At first I was confused with the different readers, but you get used to them and then you depend on them.
The story is interesting and full of great descriptions, it is easy to imagine it all, and the readers are so fluent in their rythm that makes a good storytelling experience.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Highly recommend. I started off thinking, "show, don't tell," but it developed into a great read that was able to surprise me on a few points.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I was really amazed by the world building and characters in this book. That ending also really blew me away. I need the next one ASAP! Great, wonderful, beautiful book!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This world! This story! The characters! Everything is so vibrant and engaging… worth a read or a listen!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was a unique story of two sisters. It brought up questions of family, real and found. It brought up questions of loyalty to each. Who deserves it more? It was about learning when to be independent and when to rely on others. Most importantly it was about finding yourself.
