He has been CEO of a family welfare agency, the first director of AOA and Archdeacon of Melbourne, and has served on many government committees and boards in Australia.
He has been involved with the Karen people and with Burma/Myanmar for more than 25 years, including with the Jesuit Refugee Service based in Bangkok 1991–93, and with World Vision 1993–97. Alan and Denise Nichols met Daw Aung San Suu Kyi at her home in University Avenue, Yangon, in 1998 during a brief break in her house arrest. Later, at St Mark’s Anglican Church in Camberwell, Victoria, he conducted, at her invitation, an Australian memorial service for her late husband, Dr Michael Aris.
Among his books are David Penman; Rescued by Angels: The Story of Miracles during the Rwandan Genocide; Reluctant Conscience; Life and Death Decisions; and Escape from West Papua.
He is Archdeacon Emeritus of the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne and Canon of St John’s Cathedral, Diocese of Gahini, Rwanda.view less
