    Introduction

    Autism spectrum disorder, or autism, is one of the Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDDs), a category within the text revision of the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders (DSM-IV-TR), that are characterized by severe and pervasive impairment in social interaction and communication, as well as the presence of stereotyped behaviors or restricted activities and circumscribed interests (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2000). This category of disorders includes Rett’s disorder, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, autism, Asperger’s syndrome, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder–Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS). In the current literature, the PDDs often are collectively referred to as autism spectrum disorders or ASDs (Mesibov, Shea, & Schopler, 2004; National Institute of Mental Health, 2008).

    The prevalence rates for autism and related disorders have been on the rise. A recent epidemiological review reported rates at approximately 1 per 1,000 children (Fombonne, 2003), whereas the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention currently estimate prevalence rates at 2 to 6 per 1,000 (or from 1 in 500 to 1 in 150 children; National Institute of Mental Health, 2008). Risk for a diagnosis of autism or a related disorder is approximately 4 times greater for boys than girls (APA, 2000).

    This category of disorders has been associated with a number of neurological signs and symptoms and sometimes co-occurs with a diverse group of general medical conditions, including chromosomal and central nervous system abnormalities, among others. Approximately 25% of individuals with autism or a related disorder experience seizures, a rate much higher than that of the general population (APA, 2000; Mesibov, Adams, & Klinger, 1997). The significantly higher prevalence rates of these disorders among siblings, as well as the transmission of a broader behavioral phenotype among families, underscore a possible genetic etiology (Mesibov et al., 1997; Pennington,
