About this ebook

A Boston firefighter is shot and killed in the line of duty while rescuing Amina Diallo and her fifteen-year-old son, Malick, from their burning store. Diallo, a Senegalese Muslim immigrant, is arrested for arson and murder, and will likely be convicted in record time.

Attorneys Sarah Lynch and Buddy Clancy face more than racial and religious prejudice in this impossible courtroom battle. Diallo is targeted by a gunman in open court, a key defense witness is attacked, and documents are stolen. Someone is trying to stop Sarah and Clancy from winning the case. They must find out who and why. A dangerous pursuit of the truth becomes Amina's only chance in Margaret McLean's Under Fire.

Margaret McLean’ ‘Under Fire’ is a courtroom drama set in the aftermath of a fatal fire. A Boston firefighter is shot while rescuing a Sengalese Muslim immigrant and her teen son from the fire burning their small grocery. Amina Diallo and her son Malick are rescued, but Amina is charged with both setting the fire and shooting the fireman.Amina’s only hope rests with her attorney, Buddy Clancy, who entices his niece, Sarah, into acting as his assistant. Together the two (who are obviously set for further adventures - and books) must solve the crime themselves in order to save Amina. The issue in all thrillers is whether or not tension and suspense are built and maintained throughout the novel. It was not a compelling read for me; I found it all too easy to walk away and actually difficult to return to the novel. Rather than ‘thrilling’ the novel is a bit predictable. But both Sarah and Buddy are interesting creations that deserve another outing. However, they deserve a better, perhaps more original, plot.Three Stars. The bottom line: While a promising debut, ‘Under Fire’ is more lackluster than thrilling.

I had high hopes for this book, which I received from Amazon Vine.It promised a thriller, and at first looked like it was headed in that direction. There was a fire in a store owned by Amina Diallo.Amina is an African woman who wears clothing by which she is often identified as an "Arab" or Muslim. This book does an excellent job of pointing out just how oftenour society points fingers and shows intolerance of those who are not instantly identifiable ( supposedly) at a glance as American. This has been much worse since the occurrences of 9/11/2001. Her attorney is the quirky and highly enjoyable Buddy Clancey. You can tell what his feelings are by the design on his bow ties. ( watch out for "mice")Buddy's niece is on the legal team as well. She is a strong, yet vulnerable woman who played Hockey on the American Olympic team, and has considered leaving the legal field, after an event that is connected with her former partner. Buddy is by far my favorite character. He is smart, endearing andas I said quirky. HE takes his dog, and snacks with him everywheremuch to the consternation of others who work with him. When you read this, you will find that you spend much of the timein a courtroom. The case ebbs and flows, now seemingly in favor of the defense, other times in favor of the prosecution. The defendant's main focus is the safety and well being of her teenaged son, who has been left without family since her arrest. In my rating system 3 stars equal a good solid read, but nothing special. I found this to be interesting enough to hold my attention, partly due to my fondness for Buddy. I felt it moved rather slowly in places. Whileit is a worthy enough read, it holds nothing special in its pages, in my opinion. , Buddy Clancy, a brilliant legal performer. Amina Diallo is the defendant, an African woman who wears Muslim garb
