- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Fantastic. Good pace, great story. Glad there's more in this series!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5FANTASTIC!! Started to feel a little long at the end...but it was over 600 pages, so that makes sense! :)
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is one of those books that seem to be divided into good parts, bad parts. The initial story is wonderful - a set of twins living with their Grandmother and Great-grandmother, home schooled, generally living a very restrictive life. Things change on the approach of their 15th birthday, strange relatives appear, odd things keep happening, the kids being kept in the dark...So, as they learn about their family, they are given challenges to determine which side of the family they are on. As the twins pass these tests, the book takes a downside. I found myself loosing interest in the children, as they become social awkward teens to demanding and whiny teens. The family members were not that likable, and once I figured out what was happening, I lost interest in the book. Generally, ti starts off as one story, but becomes a different one at the end.So, I suspect its a great book for teens who want a more complicated book after the Percy Jackson series, but for the most part, I think there are better books like this out there.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book tells the story of Fiona and Elliot Post. The twins live with their strict grandmother and loving great-grandmother, sheltered and naive to the outside world.
On the twins fifthteenth birthday, they get their world turned up-side down suddenly finding out they are children of and unlikely, and against all rules, pairing of an Immortal and an Infernal. Secrets start coming to the front as one family sends them on heroic trails and the other throws temptations in their paths to find out which, if either, family the twins belong to.
This is a young adult book, but I found it enjoyable and interesting, and a refreshing change from all the YA supernatural-type stories today. There are even references scattered throughout the book (Eric Nylund makes note of this in the front of the book explaining the reason for it)to point out specific things. Overall, I found the story enjoyable and with enough action to keep me wanting to find out what happened next. The only down part was that the ending kind of slipped for me. It went from an emotional scene pertaining to the twins, to me thinking "wait..what just happened?" as it shifted rather quickly from that back into a state of normal, which it certainly hadn't been right before the chapter switch. Other than that, I found it a rather engrossing read. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A decently entertaining adventure mixing a number of different mythologies together with a coming of age story. I found the footnotes a bit much, and I never really connected to the main characters.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The book takes quite a while to get going. It's definitely a kids' book - around age 14-17 I'd guess - but reading as an adult, the plot is fascinating, and the characters are absolutely wonderful.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Pretty decent book. It reminded me a lot of Percy Jackson and the Olympians just because of the whole 'children of immortals' thing. I didn't really feel like either side of their family was important or cool enough to interest me.I really liked Fiona and Eliot as well as the three trials they have to endure. The end just tappers off a lot, until I really no longer cared what happened.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Fiona and Eliot are twins who have been raised by their grandmother and great-grandmother under the confines of a list of extraordinary rules. They may read only non-fiction books, they may not listen to music, etc. Their only connection with the outside world is their work at the neighborhood pizza shop. On their fifteenth birthday all this begins to change as they learn of their powers, and eventually realize that their mother and father are members of the Immortals and the Infernals, two bands of gods and goddesses who have warred against one another for time immemorial. Suddenly the twins' lives are filled with tests of their power, terrifyingly dangerous situations, and frightening new family members. Mortal Coils is populated by many memorable characters, most notably Fiona and Eliot who must come to grips with their differing magical powers, and Louis, the homeless man with the gift of music. When the author focuses on the two teens, the story fairly flies along. The political machinations of the gods and goddesses become a little long, and complex. Over all, Mortal Coils is a fine fantasy novel. It failed to reach the five star rank because it is far too long. It would benefit greatly from careful editing to remove about a hundred pages.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Eliot and Fiona must prove themselves in a series of 3 tests and temptations. As they race to succeed and survive, each discovers their special powers and struggles to stick together, even though others try to tear them apart. What makes it harder for Eliot and Fiona is that no one is exactly who they seem and that makes it harder to know whom they can trust to help.Honestly, I would refer everyone to the Fantasy Book Critic's review to get a better idea of what to expect from Mortal Coils. The intricate details just blew me away as I raced through the book, and it reminds me somewhat of Pier Anthony's Incarnations Of Immortality series except on a grander scale. It was interesting to see how the Immortals and Infernals adapted to the present and what their modern-day names were.I look forward to the sequel if Eric Nylund does indeed continue this as a series!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Still in the middle of reading; about halfway through. I love the story and the background, and I hate hate hate what had better be the editor's idea and not the author's, of beating me over the head with over-explaining any vocabulary over four syllables (the twins' verbal sparring is fun because they, and please you, we, need to reach to one's own reading background or maybe even a dictionary to get the joke.) Still: storyline excellent enough that this dumbing-down only knocks one star off.
