Introduction
The period when the day draws to an end, the sun sets and night descends is my favourite time of day for photography because you can create stunning images using long shutter speeds. The only problem is that taking photos in the evening will (quite literally!) confuse your camera and, unless you use your camera’s manual settings, your photos will all turn out too dark and/or blurry. This eBook is designed to help you feel confident at using these manual settings as quickly as possible.
In this introduction I will be taking you through 4 basic times to take photographs in the evening and the manual settings of your camera.
There are different times of the evening to consider when you take photographs. To keep things simple, the main stages are; golden hour; sunset; twilight and night.
Evening Photography – The 4 Stages
Golden Hour
This is considered the best time to take photos, because the sun is low and not as harsh as it is in the middle of the day. This softer light places a warm glow over the scene you are capturing. There is less contrast, shadows are less pronounced and highlights are less likely to be over exposed. It is the perfect time to take portraits and land/cityscape shots.
Sunset
As the sun sets the sky is filled with lovely colours; oranges;
