Ryan T. Cragun (1976-) is a husband, father, and sociologist of religion (in order of importance). Originally from Utah, he now lives in Florida and works at the University of Tampa. INTRODUCTION
Mitt Romney has been hounded by questions about his membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as the Mormon or LDS church) since he entered the national spotlight. Pundits and commentators across the political spectrum continue to argue over whether his arduous slog through the Republican nomination process was made even tougher because many Americans have misgivings about his religion. According to Gallup, about one in five Americans say they are unwilling to vote for a Mormon. Some of these people are Republicans, and others are Democrats and independents. Hesitant Republicans tend to cite theological issues as their main stumbling block. They’re concerned that Mormons are not Christians, and they don’t want to put a heretic in the White House. Democrats and independents tend to worry about where a Mormon might stand on social issues like abortion and gay rights. Some on both sides worry that if Mitt Romney is elected, the Mormon prophet in Salt Lake City will be calling the shots. Others are reluctant to vote for anyone who believes the weird things Mormons say they believe. Polls show Americans generally have negative views toward Mormons. Among religious groups, only atheists and Muslims are less popular.
This book is designed to demystify Mitt Romney’s religion and address the major concerns – raised by both liberals and conservatives – about Mormonism. We aim to make the weird familiar. And you won’t find many people more familiar with purported Mormon weirdness than us. Both of us are sociologists with PhDs who specialize in the study of Mormonism. Both of us have written extensively in scholarly journals on Mormon issues. Both of us are former presidents of the Mormon Social Science Association, a professional society comprised of scholars who study the church.
Aside from our academic credentials, we have an insider’s perspective. We were raised Mormons in Utah. In fact, we grew up fifteen miles from each other, but didn’t meet until our paths crossed at a meeting for sociologists of religion almost a decade ago. We are descended from the early pioneers who founded Mormon settlements in Utah. Our extended families on both sides consist of active members of the church. Both of us served full-time Mormon missions just like Mitt Romney, donning white shirts and ties and riding our bikes through town and country searching for potential converts. Ryan’s mission was in Costa Rica, and Rick’s was in Louisiana and along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Both of us married Mormon women in a Mormon temple and participated in the sacred rites and rituals reserved for those in good standing with the faith. Ours was an archetypal Mormon upbringing. We were marinated in Mormonism from birth. That’s why we’re pretty confident that we know more than most pundits and commentators about Mitt Romney’s religion, and how it might affect the way he would govern as Commander in Chief.
Now, we know what some of you are thinking: If these guys are Mormons, how can I trust that what they say about Mormonism is unbiased and objective?
That’s a good question. Here’s our answer.
While we were once completely devout, these days both of us are estranged from the religion of our youth. Ryan severed all ties with the church when he was in graduate school and no longer considers himself a Mormon. Rick’s situation is more complicated, but most church-going Mormons would consider him an apostate, even if he doesn’t apply that label to himself. Our years of study and research led us (independently of one another) to conclude that the truth claims of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are no more plausible than those of any other church. We don’t believe that the visions and miracles attributed to Joseph Smith happened the way they were described to us in Sunday school. We don’t believe that the Book of Mormon narrates actual, historical events, and we don’t think it is any more inspired than the Bible, the Koran, or the Bhagavad Gita.
We’re not beholden to the church in any way. We’re not afraid that we’ll get in trouble with ecclesiastical leaders if what we write deviates from the party line, and we don’t think anything we say has an impact on our station in any afterlife. We’re guided by the facts, and we’re going to call it as we see it.
Of course, just as we’ve assuaged the concerns of those who might worry that our Mormon upbringing could compromise our objectivity, we’ve now upset those who think our disaffection from the faith will make us hostile or reflexively critical of the church. Is this book going to be some sort of anti-Mormon screed? No, that’s not the case either.
Since we study Mormonism for a living, we constantly rub shoulders with first-rate Mormon scholars who know just as much as or more than we do about the church, but who nevertheless believe and practice their religion with the dedication and enthusiasm we had for the faith when we were young. We admit we haven’t the foggiest clue how they pull this off, but we respect that they do, and we don’t think they’re deluded or disingenuous. Moreover, we love our Mormon relatives, and we recognize the important role the church plays in their lives. Being anti-Mormons would make us anti- some of the people we care about most in this world.
Besides, our commitment to calling it as we see it means not only dissenting from the church’s party line when the facts dictate, but also defending the church when it is unfairly maligned – and that happens a lot. One of the things that prompted us to write this book was the egregious distortions of Mormon theology we’ve seen splashed all over the news. Reporters, politicians, and other public figures who should know better have been guilty of grossly mischaracterizing the beliefs of our family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues. We’re happy to set the record straight when that’s what the facts require.
