    TOPIC #1

Used Lies As The Basis of His Presidential Campaign

Lie #1 – President Obama Apologized For America:

Mitt Romney accused President Obama of apologizing for America throughout the 2012 Presidential campaign. Unfortunately for Mitt Romney, there is just one problem; there is no video, transcript, memo or secret recording of President Obama ever apologizing for the United States. Here’s what the fact checkers found:

Politifact, September 2011: We think it’s a ridiculous charge. There’s a clear difference between changing policies and apologizing, and Obama didn’t do the latter. So we rate Romney’s statement Pants on Fire.

Politifact, January 2012: Obama made no secret during the campaign that he intended to set a different course on foreign policy than Bush had pursued. Yet it’s incorrect to portray these early speeches as part of a global apology tour. Using this standard, you could argue that any change in foreign policy that’s undertaken after a presidential transition and announced to the world would constitute an ‘apology’ for the previous policy. Obama's speeches contained criticisms of past U.S. actions, but not one full-throated apology.

The Washington Post - The Fact Checker, February 2011: The claim that Obama repeatedly has apologized for the United States is not borne out by the facts, especially if his full quotes are viewed in context. Obama often was trying to draw a rhetorical distinction between his policies and that of President Bush, a common practice when the presidency changes parties. The shift in policies, in fact, might have been more dramatic from Clinton to Bush than from Bush to Obama, given how Obama has largely maintained Bush's approach to fighting terrorism. In other cases, Obama's quotes have been selectively trimmed for political purposes. Or they were not much different than sentiments expressed by Bush or his secretary of state. Republicans may certainly disagree with Obama's handling of foreign policy or particular policies he has pursued, but they should not invent a storyline that does not appear to exist. Note to GOP speechwriters and campaign ad makers: The apology tour never happened. *Romney’s bogus apology claims were awarded Four Pinocchios (the strongest false rating possible).

President Bush Apologized! Where was the outcry from Romney?

Politifact: Bush apologized to King Abdullah of Jordan in 2004 for U.S. prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. Bush apologized privately, but the two leaders appeared together at a Rose Garden press conference soon after their private meeting. President Bush said,

"We also talked about what has been on the TV screens recently, not only in our own country, but overseas - the images of cruelty and humiliation. I told His Majesty as plainly as I could that the wrongdoers will be brought to justice, and that the actions of those folks in Iraq do not represent the values of the United States of America. I told him I was sorry for the humiliation suffered by the Iraqi prisoners, and the humiliation suffered by their families. I told him I was equally sorry that people who have
