An Inside Job - Walter Jakubowski
CHAPTER 1
______________
The night is pitch-black in an old abandoned warehouse district. One orange streetlight beam reveals buildings with broken out windows, rusty old dumpsters, and garbage littering the ground.
Robert Murphy (early 40's) resembles a bum, though he's dressed in a suit and carrying a briefcase. He paces, repetitively looks at his watch, and becomes increasingly irritated.
A figure appears from the shadows. Robert squints into the darkness for a long moment until the shape of a woman is seen.
...It's about time! Where have you been?
Robert saids.
Bonnie, (thirties), an attractive corporate woman who is also carrying a suitcase, comes closer to Rob. She looks at him with scorn.
Do you have the money?
Bonnie asks.
Of course I do! Do you have the goods?
Robert saids
Bonnie nods her head. Show me the money!
Bonnie demands
Robert slides the briefcase on top of a closed dumpster, and clicks open the briefcase. Robert steps back to allow Bonnie a peek inside.
She flips through stacks of money! One million, right?
Bonnie asks.
Of course! That's what we agreed upon. Now let me see the goods!
Robert saids.
Bonnie closes the briefcase, sets it on the ground next to her feet, picks up her briefcase, and places it on the same dumpster. She opens the briefcase.
Robert rummages through, counting the containers of pharmaceutical drugs.
Great. Done deal.
Robert saids.
Robert closes the briefcase, extends his hand, but Bonnie ignores his gesture.
If this gets out, you know what will happen to you, don't you?
Bonnie saids
Is that a threat?
Robert asks.
If that's what you want to call it.
Bonnie saids with a tone of sincerity.
She abruptly turns away each going their separate ways. Bonnie opens her car door, and shakes her head as she watches Robert disappear into the shadows. Bonnie climbs into her car, opens the briefcase and pulls out the money shoving it into her handbag. She finishes and closes the briefcase, starts her car and pulls away.
CHAPTER 2
_______________
Were in Chief Mason's office. This is a large office with a mahogany desk, a computer on it a, a laser printer and a phone, there is a set of filing cabinets a coat rack and a private bathroom. Across from his desk sits two mahogany leather arm chairs.
Mason (50) is well dressed in a designer suit, sitting behind his cluttered desk.
Across from him sits Johnson and Bright, both smartly dressed. Johnson, fifties, is straight as an arrow, a hard nose, and street smart. Bright, late thirties, is easy-going, somewhat naive, but is strong-minded and keenly intuitive.
You two have been chosen to investigate Mobie Pharmaceuticals.
Mason declares.
Bright asks. Why is that? From what I know of them. They have been around for years and we never had any complaints about them.
Chief Mason responds. About a year ago the CEO retired and they have a new CEO and Vice President. Rumor has it they are dealing in the black market. Now this is only a rumor that's why I want you two to look into this.
Johnson retorts. Guilty has charged!
Get busy.
Mason demands
Johnson and Bright stand. We're always busy.
Johnson declares.
Walking toward Mason's office door, Johnson looks at Bright.
Another crooked pharmaceutical laboratory.
Johnson saids seriously.
Mason interjects. We don't know that yet.
Mason saids rhetorically.
Johnson glances back at Mason. I can feel it.
Johnson saids.
Well feel your way to Mobie, will you? And close the door behind you
Mason saids.
Johnson opens the door for Bright they exit the office.
Everyone is crooked in your eyes.
Bright saids sarcastically.
Not everyone, just most of them.
Johnson saids with a serious tone.
As we enter Mobie Pharmaceuticals we see The reception area which is large, expensive, and comfortable with a couple of sofas, end tables, a glass coffee table, and a television. Behind a large counter sits the receptionist JILL, early 20's.
Johnson and Bright flash their badges. We're Diversions Investigators and need to see all your records for the past year immediately.
Johnson saids.
Jill looks at them inquisitively, wondering what they are doing here? She looks down the hallway, hoping to see Bonnie, but to no avail.
You'll have to talk to our VP, Bonnie Deville.
Jill's saids.
Is she in at the moment?
Bright saids.
Jill picks up the phone and dials an extension. She turns away from the investigators so they don't hear her. Ms. Deville? There are two investigators here to see you.
Jill saids. Okay.
She looks at Johnson and Bright, as though she is not happy with them being there. Her office is straight back and to the right.
Jill saids
Thank you.
Bright saids.
CHAPTER 3
________________
Bonnie is frantically shoving papers into a desk drawer. There is a knock at the door. She takes a stack of papers and throws them into the garbage can, and shoves more papers under her desk calendar. Come in!
Bonnie calls out.
The door opens. Johnson and Bright enter.
Bonnie looks at them curiously, impatiently and in utter disbelief. May I help you!
Bonnie saids in discord.
Johnson and Bright approach her desk. Johnson surveys the room, looking around, trying to find information.
Yes you can. I'm Johnson and this is my partner, Bright. We're Diversion Investigators from the DEA, and need to look at all your records and documents pertaining to the manufacturing of drugs.
Johnson saids in a gruff voice.
No one told me about this!
Bonnie saids in a soft voice
"With all due respect, no
