The Sydney Rye series of mysteries feature a strong female protagonist and her rescue dog, Blue. It is recommended for the 18+ who enjoy some violence, don't mind dirty language, and are up for a dash of sex. Not to mention an awesome, rollicking good mystery!

UNLEASHED is the first book in Emily Kimelman's best selling Sydney Rye series of mysteries.

When the series begins Sydney Rye is named Joy Humbolt. She does not like people telling her what to do, so it comes as no surprise that she was just fired from her last job. When she buys Charlene Miller's dog-walking business on Manhattan's exclusive upper east side, it seems like the perfect fit: Quiet environment, minimal contact with people.

But then one of her clients turns up dead, and Charlene disappears. Rumors say Charlene was having an affair with the victim--and of course, everyone assumes Joy must know where she is. Joy begins to look into the crime, first out of curiosity then out of anger when there is another murder and threats start to come her way.

When police detective Mulberry is assigned to the case, Joy finds a kindred spirit--cynical and none-too-fond of the human race. As they dig deep into the secrets of Manhattan's elite, they not only get closer to the killer but also to a point of no return. One last murder sends Joy Humbolt hurtling over the edge. Her only chance of survival is to become Sydney Rye.

Talk about introducing some change into your life: Joy Humbolt breaks up with her boyfriend, loses her job and acquires the biggest dog possible from the pond - all in one day. And then she buys Charlene Miller's dog-walking business on Manhattan's exclusive upper east side. It seems like the perfect fit: Quiet environment, minimal contact with people. But from the start things seem fishy: why was Charlene in such a hurry to sell her business? And then she stumbles over a corpse. Her natural inquisitiveness leads her into an investigation of her own, her new business gives her an in to the tenants as well as the servants.
It took me a while to figure out what is so different about this book: there are absolutely no shifts of perspective. The whole book is in the here and now of one person only. This gives the whole story its specific flavor. Though some of the choices she makes are a bit implausible, overall it's a quite enjoyable read.

I obtained this ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. I had wanted to review this author for years as I heard good things about her books, now I'm a HUGE fan! Blue saved Joy from a bullet in her apartment so when she fell in love with the large dog that was part wolf and unknown several other breeds she guessed she save him from the pound. Joy Humbolt had broken up with Marcus, lost her barista job and the next day went to adopt a dog. Joy is not a people person so it wasn't like she cried for serving up coffee, in fact, she enjoyed the look on the old bitty's face when she told her off before her boss came out and fired her! At one point she agreed to buy a dog walking service from Charlene when she learned how much it paid, but Charlene left in a hurry and said she had business out of town. Joy's gut told her to run now, but her feet wouldn't listen and suddenly she was discussing dead men left and right! I can't wait to read the sequel where Joy Humbolt morphs into Sydney Rye a P. I.!!

Recommended by a friend. Camp and kicky, half mystery plus enough mess and mayhem to keep me entertained in this pandemic. I plan to keep reading the series to see if it holds, improves, or declines. I like Blue.

I like mysteries, and I like stories about dogs. So I picked up this novel. I really enjoyed reading it. The mystery was interesting. Lots of potential suspects. Towards the end, it got a little silly, with the hunt for lost treasure. And the ending was very sad. But I still liked this, and I intend to read the next books in the series.

Joy Humboldt is going through rather a challenging patch in life. She's finally broken up with her manipulative jerk of a boyfriend. The next morning, she heads off to the pound to adopt a dog--a huge mixed breed she names Blue--but later that day, at her job at a barista at a coffee shop that's not Starbucks, she mouths off to a customer she thinks is being unreasonable. It's really quite reasonable, given her behavior, when her boss fires her on the spot.

But then a neighbor connects her with a friend of a friend, and she buys a dog walking business. Things are looking up, right?

Then she finds one of her new clients dead. The woman who sold her the business has disappeared. And the police seem strangely interested in only certain aspects of the crime.

Sgt. Declan Doyle is very handsome, very kind and gentlemanly, and very interested. He also warns her about the questionable record of the officer who will be heading up the investigation--Detective Mulberry. Mulberry, it seems, isn't too particular about the rules or due process. At least, according to Doyle, who used to be his partner.

Don't let the dog on the cover lure you into thinking this is a cozy. It's much more toward the hard-boiled end of the mystery spectrum. None of the characters, except possibly Joy's brother James and his lover Hugh, are unambiguously people. I liked quite a number of them, though.

No dogs die in the story, though that's possibly a very minor spoiler for one scene. On the other hand, there is mention and some description of S&M sex, though not anything very explicit.

It was an entertaining read, though not more than that, and as mentioned there may be content issues for some readers.

    I bought this book.

This is a debut novel from Emily Kimelman and I truly enjoyed it, not wanting to put it down!Ms. Kimelman uses a short chapter format for this book which gives the book a fast pace. As a debut novel the characters are just being introduced so perhaps some can use a little more depth however, I was completely taken with the protagonist Joy Humboldt (in the novel you'll learn why it's called Sydney Rye). Ms. Kimelman portrays for the reader a character who is lost in the beginning, a bit immature, but strong. She is quite a believable character. As for the story it's a classic murder mystery. The trick is in how the author uses the characters and their experiences to solve the murder. Ms. Kimelman does a good job of bringing it all together full circle.

Unleashed is the page turning debut novel by Emily Kimelman. The main character Joy Humbolt, who recently broke up with her boyfriend and lost her job, makes the rushed decision to adopt a dog from the pound for company. Little did she know that adopting the large husky mix named Blue would change her life forever.Soon a dog walking business is thrown in her lap and she decides to give it a shot since there is a lot of money to be made. On her first day learning the ropes of being a professional dog walker, her world is thrown for a loop when the dog she is walking discovers a dead body. Joy is quickly thrown into a world she never knew existed where things aren’t always what they appear to be.The super sexy, self-confident Declan introduces Joy to a hidden world of the rich, powerful and greedy. While she tries to uncover who murdered her boss, she will learn just how far some people will go for money but more importantly, how far she is willing to go to protect her family.Detective Mulberry is a great detective who will stop at nothing to solve a crime, even if that means throwing the rule book out of the window and doing things his way. When he finds himself thrown off of the case, he must learn to trust Joy and help her solve the murder before more people end up being a victim.I really enjoyed the writing style of Ms. Kimelman. She told an intriguing tale that kept me wanting to know what happened next. The only thing I wish had been different is how the relationship with Declan played out in the end. It felt rushed and unfinished to me. I would still recommend everyone read Unleashed.
