    Introduction

I love the web. I love designing websites, surfing the Internet for information, and discovering new social media networks. I wasn’t always involved with the World Wide Web. In fact, most of my adult life has been spent in school or in the retail industry. I got a B.A. in Classical Studies, and an M.A. in Latin, and worked for Avon, Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, and Macy’s in various storeline, buying, and merchandise planning positions.

Then...I took some web design classes and was hooked. I began working with Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, and various other graphic design programs. Sure, I was on Facebook and tweeted occasionally. But I had no idea how entertaining and important social media was. I was lucky to be living in the San Francisco Bay Area, where innovative companies like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Apple, Google, and Adobe are located. I started a blog, attended MacWorld, Web 2.0, and other web related conferences, read every design book and magazine I could get my hands on, listened to web related podcasts, and started building websites from scratch and via templates. It’s been rewarding and fun.

I’ve met many people, with little to zero web design experience, who’ve decided to build a website from a template. Although some have been able to publish a satisfactory site, others have needed help choosing a template, working with hosting companies, getting their site recognized by Google, and choosing the right social media networks for their business. It can be an extremely overwhelming process.

I decided to turn my list of frequently asked questions into a book with website and online marketing tips. My goal was to arm people with enough information to make decisions before they started their website project. The initial section of the book outlines my essential points, while succeeding sections give more details. I also sprinkle some information here and there for people who have a little bit of html training. While I’m confident my recommendations will help, I urge everyone to consider their own specific goals before taking my advice.

There are literally thousands of templates out there, with hundreds of new ones being advertised every week. Although most templates and website builders use universal terms and descriptors, some will use different terms than I do. If you come across a term you haven’t seen before, ask your hosting company what it means and what you need to do, if you’re aren’t able to figure it out on your own.

If you fall in love with web design, like I did, check out amazon.com, learnit.com, lynda.com, adobe.com, google.com, and youtube.com for books, videos, classes, and tutorials on web design and online marketing. O’Reilly publishes many useful books too.

Take a look at my tips, and have fun creating your site. Check out some of the past winners and nominees of the Webby Awards for inspiration:

    The Essentials

You’ve decided to build your own website. That’s terrific! A website can be a great resource for both your personal and professional goals. Here’s a list of the most important topics to consider before you begin your website project.

    Domain Names (e.g. amazon.com)

A domain name is the name that identifies your site. Choose a domain name that relates to the overall theme of your website and is easy to remember. Using the name of your business is often a great idea. CNN.com is a good domain name, because it automatically identifies the purpose of the site: CNN and its news stories. Don’t do anything to make your website address difficult to remember. Avoid dashes,
