About this ebook
This Second Edition includes a new Introduction and a Readers Conversation Guide to facilitate group discussion.
Do you know the family that lives in the two-story house on the corner with the picket fence and the dog? You can't tell from the outside that anything is wrong. Under My Roof, A MOTHER'S Story of the Heinous Crime of Incest is a memoir that takes place in the Midwest in the 1970's, prior to Megan's Law. This is both a tragedy and triumphant journey of a mother who is an RN, that comes home early from the night shift at the hospital to discover her husband perpetrating the terrible crime of incest against her young daughter.
She questions, not only how could this happen, but how could a mother let it happen?
The National Center for Victims of Crime cites the most common form of child abuse is incest. It is also the most underreported and least discussed crime, concealed by the victims because of guilt, shame and fear. The numbers of victims are escalating.
King, a registered nurse draws on her experience as a mother of a survivor. This story may change the way victims, law enforcement, teachers, teenagers, clergy and counselors view the mother -- who is also a victim. King offers a list of overlooked grooming behaviors she experienced prior to and during her marriage.
Emalou King
Emalou King, RN, BSN, PHN is a Registered Nurse with a Bachelors Degree and a certificate in Public Health. She has worked in Hospitals, Clinics, Nursing Homes and Drug Treatment Programs. The last 16 years of King’s nursing career involved drug addicted mothers, their babies and preemies from Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford, as well as pregnant and parenting teens from the age of twelve and up. Under My Roof, a Mother’s Story of the Heinous Crime of Incest is a personal experience of deceit. When King started over out West, she kept her family secrets from friends, clients and colleagues because of shame and embarrassment. She hopes to convince you to believe that when a mother knows something is amiss, there is something amiss. When a mother thinks something is wrong...something is wrong. King is a mother in pursuit of truth, justice, advocacy and education in the prevention of child sexual abuse. King published in the Canadian Journal of Nursing, contributed to the Mosby’s textbook Pharmacological Aspects of Nursing, won the NDSNA writing contest twice and is the author of two paperback children’s books, dabbles in poetry and is interested in screenplay/script writing.
