1939 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony
Many of the greatest figures in the National Pastime’s history found their way to the upstate New York village of Cooperstown to witness the first National Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on June 12, 1939. On the same day the institution was formally dedicated, 25 electees from the first four induction classes were honored with bronze plaques. Ten of the 11 living members posed for this photo, including (left to right, front) Eddie Collins, Babe Ruth, Connie Mack, Cy Young, (rear) Honus Wagner, Grover Cleveland Alexander, Tris Speaker, Napoleon Lajoie, George Sisler, and Walter Johnson. Ty Cobb, according to reports, was delayed because he was overcome with indigestion en route to Cooperstown and had to stop off at a hospital in nearby Utica. I was washing up over at Knox College,
