Daydreaming while watching television. Even if it is a favorite program, a Maladaptive Daydreamer may find his or her thoughts drifting towards daydreaming.
What IS Maladaptive Daydreaming?
Maladaptive Daydreaming is still very much in the early stages of study. And since it is a very private and personal activity, many people who may suffer from it are reluctant to share their daydreaming addiction with anyone.
When The Monkees sang Daydream Believer
in the sixties, research was just beginning to reveal the beneficial aspects of daydreaming.
Daydreaming has long gotten a bad rap. For centuries, daydreamers have been considered lazy and unproductive. However, thanks to research conducted by Jerome L. Singer of Yale University and John S. Antrobus of the City College of New York, it was established that daydreaming has beneficial effects. Enhancing creativity and problem-solving skills, relaxation and relieving boredom are just a few.
Daydreaming is part of the imagination process. Ask any writer or artist and you’re liable to get a 30-minute diatribe extolling the virtues of daydreaming for their craft. Without daydreaming as it is part of the imagination process, Walt Disney may never have sketched that little mouse.
What is Maladaptive Daydreaming?
As defined by Dr. Eli Somér who first proposed the phrase, Maladaptive Daydreaming is extensive fantasy activity that replaces human interaction and/or interferes with academic, interpersonal, or vocational functioning.
