    In the prologue and first chapter of 13 Hours, author Mitchell Zuckoff starts by taking readers back to a much earlier attack on the US outpost in Benghazi – the one that took place in 1967, right after the start of the Six Day War between Israel and Egypt.

    The building was overrun, and after a rescue attempt was discussed, a British armored column broke through and rescued the ten Americans who were being held hostage.

    Fast forward nearly fifty years, and the current narrative begins by describing the experience of Jack Silva, the head of a secret US government organization called the Global Response Staff (GRS) that was created after 9/11 to help protect and provide security for US interests abroad.

    It chronicles his arrival in Libya in 2012, starting with a description of Benghazi, which is described as a lawless city, and the US compound where Silva would be charged with the task of keeping Americans safe.
