About this ebook

Never trust an assassin.

Celaena's story continues in this second book in the #1 bestselling Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas.

Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become the King's Champion. But she is far from loyal to the crown. Though she goes to great lengths to hide her secret, her deadly charade becomes more difficult when she realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. Her search for answers ensnares those closest to her, and no one is safe from suspicion-not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a princess with a rebel heart.

Then, one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena's world shatters, she will be forced to decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie . . . and what she is willing to fight for.

The second book in the #1 New York Times bestselling Throne of Glass series returns readers to a land destroyed by liars, where one woman's truth is the only thing that can save them all.

Reread 2018 - still a very good book and I am excited for what’s to come in this series.

    2015/2016 review:

This book is ridiculously good. I hate that I took my sweet time listening to the audio book though! I can't wait to dive into book 3!

The next book in the Thorne of Glass saga was amazing. Along with the action, amazing world building, and drama, Maas brings in a love story and so much angst. My heart broke in so many different places throughout this book.So many things were revealed that have me extremely excited to continue on with the next book. All the stars for this one as well.

Celaena seems a bit more childish in this story but it's still an entertaining read. And I'm jumping right into the next one.

Celaena Sardothien is an assassin, a fact which both men infatuated with her would much rather forget. Prince Dorian is all too aware of this particular affliction of hers, as his father insists upon having him in the room for every gruesome detail. Chaol of course is also painfully aware that not only does her profession provide an impediment; their ranks are unequal. This does not stop either of them from falling maddeningly in love with her.

Crown of Midnight was such a satisfying read, although I had already figured out some of the major plot-twists well before their reveal. Archer can go die in a hole as far as I am concerned, snivelling sack of crazy that he is. Sarah J Maas, just so you know, I am not likely to forgive you for a certain something happening to a certain someone in this book (fairly certain you know which someone, and what something).

I have to say I was a little hesitant to keep reading this series after the first book and it's love triangle...but this second instalment kicked some ass. It was so much better than the first!! Cannot wait to read the last book! So much badassery and just awesomeness overall :)

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I'm excited for the next one. Especially excited to learn more about Celeana and hopefully more about her past. I enjoyed this even more than I enjoyed the first and I loved Celeana more with every chapter.

Team Choal all the way too.

So, I know I join a lot of you when I say that I have been waiting for Sarah J. Maas' Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass #2) for what feels like FOREVER. That being said, I had the amazing and wonderful privilege of being included in Literary Lushes ARC Tour for this long awaited read, and let me tell you, it is definitely worth the wait! Crown of Midnight, which releases August 27th, 2013, will not disappoint you eager readers who are longing for more action-filled adventure, deceit, love and magic. Maas really hits a home run with her second installment in the Throne of Glass series that will keep you urgently turning pages until the very last page (and even after the last page I kept flipping the page hoping there was more)!Crown of Midnight picks up right where Throne of Glass left off with Celaena deep in action as the King's newly appointed Champion, but there is more than meets the eye with this story and Celaena has secrets of her own; secrets from the King, secrets from her friends and secrets even from herself. Who can she trust and where do her loyalties truly lie? Can Celaena finally find something worth for? This installation is so packed with revelations, twists and turns that will keep you engaged from page one until the very end. Mass does an amazing job by further developing the complexity of the characters throughout this novel. There are still remnants of the Celaena-Dorian-Chaol love triangle, but it has dissolved slightly. Don't get me wrong, there are still super steamy moments that will leave you breathless but not as much of the "she's mine" "no she's mine" moments. We learn more about what really is behind the actions these characters make and learn that the trio really do have each other's best interests at heart but they each also have their own separate and distinct drama within their own story that they are trying to sort out. The storyline is so wonderfully complex that you will fall deep into this web and still come out in one piece! Maas is a master at weaving a perfect and seamless tapestry that has such intricate detail up close but when you step away tells a full and robust story that will pull you in, chew you up and spit you out and you will still ask for more!If you liked Throne of Glass you will fall in love all over again with Crown of Midnight! Between Celaena's wonderfully complex and sometimes (ok all the time) arrogant personality and witty banter and her ever-increasing bad-assness and of course the swoon-worthy moments (and let me tell you they are IN HERE) you will absolutely be left breathless by the end. If you are still on the fence and are considering this book (which really, have I not convinced you yet?), stop and add to your TBR pile now! The only drawback is that you will have to wait another year for #3 to release....

Given it has been a bit from reading Throne of Glass, honestly all I remember was that I loved it, Celaena was kick ass and I adored her, and there was a love triangle that I liked and I think I was rooting for the underdog. All my recollection from before I began, but it quickly came back to me. Celaena is tough, smart and witty, and I admired her. She goes about everything in such a calculated manner, and she has this ability to see and treasure the good, and have no limits for injustice. I couldn't believe but thought it was exactly like her in the ways that she was defying the king. I knew that she was walking a very narrow road, but admired her all the same. I honestly had forgotten about the Elena theme from the last one, but it also emerged in this one, and I enjoyed that storyline as it challened Celaena even more. I loved Chaol even more in this one. It is becoming apparent to even Dorian how much he cares for Celaena, and he can't stand it when she is off on the dangerous missions for the king. He wants to protect her and wishes that the line drawn by his position and hers wasn't there. But I lived for their stolen moments, of how steamy it can even be for him to just hold her. It is touching how he cares for her so much he just wants to throw caution to the wind, but I am glad that he is smart about it. Dorian was present in this one, but thankfully wasn't really a factor into the triangle like in the first, but he is there as a friend to Celeana when she needs one the most. He stepped up in many ways, but still has a long way to grow as royalty. But he is harboring a secret in this one that I had no inkling would happen, but it means big things. I will say that Sarah almost made me cry, and def shocked me at some of the turn of events that happened. There were so many twists in this one, things that I never saw coming, and that I am still even at the end, not sure exactly what the implications will be but I know that I can't wait to find out. The climax and ending left me breathless and wanting more from this beautifully written novel with so many layers. Botto-m Line: Layered and exciting 2nd book of a series with an awesome and dangerous femalemain character.

If you thought the first book was amazing, you are in for a surprise because this book is spectacular! From the start it becomes so complex. Many of these characters have their own hidden agendas they are working on, and when some of these agendas intertwine unimaginable things happen. We also flip from moments of bliss to ones that purely mess with our feelings. It's all rather heart stopping and page turning. But that revelation at the very end is eye opening. Definitely the icing on the cake. Luckily the next book is already out, so I don't have to stop this remarkable series.

Where do I start? This book was amazing! I loved this ALMOST as much as the first one, and I loved the first one a lot. This series has forever changed my life. I will never look at another book the same again. My mind was so wrapped up in the story, if I wasn't reading it, I was either thinking about it, or babbling on and on to my sister. I think she hates me now...

    WHAT I LIKED:
Honestly, I don't know what I can say that hasn't been said already. The characters were wonderful, the action was awesome, and the romance! Oh! The romance was so...so...I can't even accurately describe it with words. If you read it, you'll know what I mean. For the first half or so of the book, I loved that Celaena finally picked a guy (Chaol)and from what I could tell, she was going to stick with him, and everything was beautiful and lovely. Yay! But then, THAT happened. And I was absolutely devastated. Why?! Why, why, why, WHY?! I really, really, REALLY hope that Celaena will forgive him, and get back together with him. My heart broke a little every time I read about how Celaena treated him afterwards. In case you haven't noticed, I am definitely on Chaol's side, and I think Celaena treated him way too harshly. Is it too much to ask that two people who clearly love each other, be together?! Apparently, it is...

    WHAT I DISLIKED:
This book is PERFECT. Absolutely PERFECT!

THOUGHT #1: Is it just me, or does the author look a lot like Jennifer Lawrence?
THOUGHT #2: The title though...what does Crown of Midnight have anything to do with the story?
THOUGHT #3: I thought Celaena's hair was gold, why is it white on the cover?
THOUGHT #4: Why do all my thoughts end in ?s?

I adore this series, and I can't wait to read the next one!

CROWN OF MIDNIGHT is epic fantasy at its best. It has a tyrannical king, a handsome crown prince, a loyal captain of the guard, and an eighteen-year-old Champion who does the king's bidding (or at least lets him think so.)Celaena Sardothien has won the contest to become the King's Champion and now has to do what he wants. What he mainly wants is for her to kill his many and varied enemies. Since she loves both Dorian, the king's heir, and Chaol, the captain of the king's guards, the king uses their safety as an incentive for her to do what he commands. But Celaena has a number of secrets - some of which are revealed in this middle book in a trilogy. Among her secrets is the fact that she isn't killing those she is sent to kill but, rather, letting them flee the kingdom. When the king demands that she investigate the rebel movement growing in the city, Celaena encounters an old friend named Archer and learns that her best friend Nehemia is also keeping secrets from her. This was an amazing story about love found and then lost, hidden magic and magical beings, and a quest to determine the source of the king's power and finding a way to defeat it. I liked Celaena because, for an assassin, she is really a girly-girl who loves pretty things and who really wants to just be able to live her life without getting involved in all the convoluted politics of the court. Unfortunately, fate has a role for her to play that will take her out of her comfort zone and into a world she would rather not enter.I can't wait to find out what happens next.

My love for Throne of Glass is well known, but, after reading some reviews, I started wondering if the book was quite as good as I remembered. There were some fair criticisms, things I'd not even considered. In Crown of Midnight, Maas really hits those elements that were missing from the first, and ups the stakes to an incredible degree. This sequel is a must read for those who loved Throne of Glass and perhaps even for those who were on the fence. One of the criticisms I'd seen was of Celaena being proclaimed a heartless assassin, but that not really ever being shown. Instead, she's going to balls and eating candy. Of course, I love that the assassin has a softer side, but I did agree retroactively that it would have been good to see more of her dark side. In Crown of Midnight, you get to see Celaena living up to her reputation, and, when this girl is on a killing spree, it's a thing of bload-soaked beauty. She may like frilly dresses, but she's also totally cool with being covered in blood. Being able to see all of the facets of Celaena really adds depths to her character. The other main criticism of the first book that I agreed with was that the King, clearly the villain, didn't have much of a role. He just sort of cackled evilly every so often. In Crown of Midnight, we get to see more of him and learn about his plans, still only the very slightest understanding, but it's enough to make him one intensely creeptastic villain. The plotting of the story becomes much more complex in Crown of Midnight. Actually, I was really surprised by the direction that the story has gone, very different from the more basic fantasy roots of the first. There are a number of twists, none of which I really saw coming, though I felt really dumb that I missed the biggie, since there were a lot of hints. The plot is full of twists and turns, and full of betrayals. I do have some quibbles with the world building, but they're minor enough I can't really draw a line to any one thing.Of course, there's also the romance. The age of Dorian is over and now it's all about Chaol (as it should be). All I can really say about what happens here is that I approve wholeheartedly. This is why I love guys like Chaol, all cool and collected on the outside, but so much passion on the inside. *sighs happily*Maas impressed me with her willingness to be cruel and heartless to the characters. To be honest, I really didn't get the impression from Throne of Glass that she would be willing to kill off characters, but I'm thrilled to be wrong. Oh, she's brutal. Mwahahaha. And, no, I won't tell you who dies, so have fun sitting on the edge of your seat the whole time. As you may know, I find killing off a beloved main character a mark of good fantasy. Sarah J. Maas really proves her talent in Crown of Midnight, deftly avoiding any sort of second book syndrome. Instead, she greatly amps up the world building, plot and intensity. In my opinion, this series is a must read for fantasy fans. The third book is poised to be epic and heartbreaking, and I am so excited.

Much poking at secrets, some of which bite back.Celaena Sardothien is juggling love and duty, trying to do what she must to survive while at the same time trying to find ways around the orders she has been given to save those who want the best for the kingdom. She's determined that she will succeed and while, sometimes the relationships are a bit overblown, she is a great character.I like this series. I want more of it.

I am absolutely loving the Throne of Glass series so far! This book makes me so giddy I was practically rolling in my bed in glee and then suddenly bam! Everything is ruined and I'm a sad heaping mess on the floor. It was an emotional roller coaster, but I should have seen it coming, there was no way the characters could be so happy this soon. They obviously have to suffer a little more (;-;). There are a lot of secrets and unexpected surprises, even though its started to drag on towards the middle but it was still a fantastic read. I need to finish these books! This may just be one of my new favorite series.

Celaena is now officially King's Champion, and the twisted King of Adarlan has been sending her out to kill his enemies. Her latest assignment: Archer, a young man from her past. Will Celaena do the king's bidding, even if it costs her? And what about the latest assignment she gets from Elena, a past queen whose tomb Celaena can access through a secret passage from her room?I really liked Throne of Glass: this sequel had a lot to live up to, and it delivered in spades. Celaena is a complicated character who definitely has a dark side. I enjoyed getting to know a little more about her back story, even though some of the developments didn't take me entirely by surprise. The whole love triangle thing got on my nerves off and on, but if I have to have one, I guess I'd take it like this with Chaol, Captain of the Guard, and Prince Dorian each loving her in his own way and each having a really good reason why a relationship with her is a bad idea. Despite that minor complaint, I'm looking forward to seeing how the story continues to develop.

There is definitely a love triangle here, but it wasn't too bad. One of the men actually tries to let her go and almost succeeds. A step up from the young adult triangles I've read before. This second volume in the series was intriguing and had a bunch of twists in it that I wasn't expecting but probably should have. I enjoyed listening to this audio book and am looking forward to seeing what happens next in the third book.

3.5 stars. I can see why so many people pushed me to continue the series to this book since it does finally start feeling like solid fantasy with cool magic! The first half didn't really grab me and the second half didn't completely make up for it but I did enjoy it by the end. The romance is getting a bit annoying to me but not as bad as some YA ;). I honestly think the main thing keeping me from loving these books is that I've read so much fantasy that the magic just doesn't seem all that amazing to me. I'll definitely still be reading book three though.

This is book two in the Throne of Glass series. Celaena, having become the King's Champion, now has a little bit of money, and the freedom to move about the castle unescorted. She receives an order to assassinate someone who at one time was a very close friend, and she is trying to find out more answers to the mysteries that appear buried in the glass castle. I enjoyed this book, though perhaps not as much as book one.

Celeana has a job to do and she does it well. Its not cooking or tending a family but a great assassin for a tyrant king. She has become his hidden and deadly sword to his enemy. If working for an evil king wasn't enough she has to deal with a love triangle and supernatural elements that she is only discovering in her past, present and future. She has to decide whether to work toward her future or the future of her people. Pro: - What I LOVE the most about this book and series is the female protagonist. I LOVE, HEART and wanna be Celeana when I grow up. She is so well written and has depth for miles. What i love is that she truly is a strong female character. She does not depend on a male figure to carry her. Nor does her occupation define her or her personality. Yes she is a deadly assassin but that doesn't mean she doesn't like flowing gowns, perfumes, softness and reading. Yes she reads and actually finds most answers in a library...... well and danger but we all know that happens some times ;). She only grows and flourishes in this book. - There is a sorta love triangle and im usually not a big fan of these. Mostly because they seem to overshadow the storyline when there is a female lead. BUT this is not the case here. The love story is second to the actual plot which adds to the dimension of the plot. There is no Bachlorrette style conflict where Celeana is pining for one man or cannot make up her own mine. Likewise the men are not conniving or over bearing. Yes the characters go through emotions and ordeals while trying to sort them....But SURPRISE they tend to do it in an adult way. Not neglecting their duties or friends in the process. - Working together! Yay..... Girls and boys work together! Even through their differences and conflicts Celeana, Dorian, Nehemia and Chaol work together. They try to support each other through friend ship. The girls have an actual friendship that is complicated and not Mean Girls. - Mort..... I want him as my door nob...... NOW!..... to question visitors and suitors Con: -The walking dead.... thats what your going to call it...... Quotes: -The knights gift, of seeing her for who she was, not what she was that won her heart

I still have a hard time imagining the main character as a teenager, given the training and experiences she's had and how quick she is to rise to a "battle rage" pitch. But other than that, I'm enjoying this small detour (from my usual fare) into more traditional fantasy, but with some seriously strong female characters.

Now that's what I'm talking about! Everything about this book was better than the first: It was fast paced, the writing was better, and some of the backstory I was yearning for was filled in.Not to mention that Celaena TOTALLY brought the badassery and, while I love the little Princeling, I am now firmly planted on Team Captain of the Guard! Yay for character development! There were a few plot elements that I guessed early on, but there were also a few more that I didn't see coming at all. I was totally immersed in the story this go around and I couldn't have stopped reading if I'd wanted to. Gah! I can't wait to see what HEIR OF FIRE has in store for me next :)
