MOBILE TOYS
ANY toy that can be pushed or pulled about is a firm favourite with children and this is particularly true if they can ride on it. Strength in construction is of great importance for such toys are subjected to hard punishment, especially when the youngsters are excited!
UTILITY CART NO. 1 (Fig. 20)
This toy is a combination of two things. It is first of all a four-wheel cart that can be pushed or pulled about, the wheels being trolley castors capable of swivelling in any direction. In its secondary rôle it really becomes a static toy because it is lifted up on end to become a seat.
The chassis
of the cart is built up from 2 in. by 1 in. battens, lap dovetailed together at the corners whilst the cross-rail is through tenoned and wedged into the sides. Glue and cramp all joints and preferably use a waterproof glue so that there is no danger of the joints being weakened if the cart is left out in the rain.
For the floor
of the cart you can use 1/4 in. thick hardboard screwed to the chassis frame and brought up flush with its sides. The front edge can be rounded over or nosed
but the others should be left square. The rest of the carcase is made up as a single unit and is screwed to the base.
Cut the sides and back from 3/8 in. thick plyboard, shaping the sides as indicated in Fig. 20. Hand grips should be provided as indicated in the detail sketch. Two 2 in. diameter holes are bored with an expanding bit and the remainder of the shaping is
