About this ebook

CAST IN RUIN

Seven corpses are discovered in the streets of a Dragon's fief. All identical, down to their clothing.

Kaylin Neya is assigned to discover who they were, who killed them—and why. Is the evil lurking at the borders of Elantra preparing to cross over?

At least the investigation delays her meeting with the Dragon Emperor. And as the shadows grow longer over the fiefs, Kaylin must use every skill she's ever learned to save the people she's sworn to protect. Sword in hand, dragons in the sky, this time there's no retreat and no surrender…

I loved this book! It is probably my favourite in the series. Explaining why would get all spoilery, but if you love Dragons (and I do), then this story finally gives you insight into their existence and rules. I also loved how Kaylin grew in this novel. THAT is how you keep a character from stagnating during a series.

I think the only jarring issue for me was that the events in "Cast in Ruin" take place almost immediately after the previous novel, and since I had a delay in reading the two, it felt like it should have been longer. I kept trying to wrap my head around the fact that the People had only been there for a few days, not weeks.

My friend complained that there wasn't enough Nightshade, so I will warn that she is right -- he is limited to one very brief scene. But I really didn't mind as he wasn't relevant to this plot.

I was a little unsure how I wanted to rate this book. Big fan of series but I think all of us readers are thinking later books are "adventures set in world of ..." versus getting on with series and letting her finally meet dragon emperor or discover what all the runes and her powers mean.

One of my favorite books in the series. As always Khristine Hvam does an excellent job with the narration.

The magic of CAST IN RUIN was some of the most accessible of this series, and I love the image of Kaylin sleeping curled around her egg every night.

This one picks up where #6 left off. The Norrins are settling in, and of course, more trouble follows them. Some threads are coming together, and more are laid. I'm trying to resist #8 until #9 comes out... we'll see if I manage.

One dead body is bad enough, but when seven identical corpses turn up in the fief of Tiamaris, Private Kaylin Neya and Corporal Severin are on the job. The barriers at the borders are weakening, and cascading storms are bringing strange things through. Silver lining for Kaylin? Putting off her meeting with the Dragon Emperor means she'll probably stay uneaten longer.Throwing herself headfirst into trouble continues to be Kaylin's preferred mode of operation - but it does make for an entertaining read.

This is the seventh book in the Chronicles of Elantra by Sagara. I had very mixed feelings about this book. The beginning of this book was slow moving and confusing, but the ending was very interesting. This series just moves so slowly I am really starting to question what direction it is heading in.Kaylin is still struggling to balance her life. Between her duties as a Hawk, etiquette and magic lessons with dragons, and assisting the midwifes she has a full plate. Then Sanabalis requests her presence in the new dragon fief; there are murders happening there...strange thing is that it is the same woman is being murdered. Her body is turning up murdered over and over. Then with the arrival of a new stranger called the Ascendant things get even stranger. Kaylin is drawn into it all and has to solve the murders before things get even worse for Elantra.I felt like Kaylin is running around frantic in this book, she never gets a break. She never gets to sleep or eat or have a teeny bit of down time. There isn't a ton of Nightshade in this book, he's in the story just a tiny bit. Kaylin also doesn't spend any time with her midwife duties. Severn remains Kaylin's shadow; he kind of chases her around and keeps her out of trouble. I really wish Severn was developed more as a character. All the above aside, the dragons do have some interesting character development. You learn a lot about the Arkon's past and he is in the story a significant amount. Tiamiras, Sanabalis, and the Lady are also in the story a significant amount. As a result of all of the activities relating to dragons you learn a lot about their race and their past. A new dragon is added to the already volatile mix of dragons; I really enjoyed the addition of this new dragon.Kaylin's powers continue to grow but also continue to remain mysterious. Kaylin doesn't continue any of her magic training in this book but is instead spends time taking etiquette lessons with a different dragon to prepare for her meeting with the Emperor (which still hasn't happened). It's not that these books aren't well written; it's that there are so many little things going on that it makes the story move very slowly. The time period covered in this novel is very short, things are very complicated, and at times very confusing. Despite Kaylin's growing powers she has the same problems from book to book (being late, not getting to eat, not committing to Severn, not being dressed properly, etc) she just seems somewhat stagnant to me. Severn could be an awesome character but, as with the last book, we barely heard from him. I love this world and I think the plot is interesting; there is just too much going on and it is squished into too short of a time...yet it seems like the story is moving so slowly. The characters that I loved from the first few books in this series have grown stagnant. The best part of this book was the addition of a new, and rather snarky, dragon character. The book wraps up okay, there is still a lot left unsettled and I am having a hard time seeing where all of this is going.Overall this was an okay addition to the series. I loved the dragon history and the addition of a new dragon character. I did not enjoy how the story started so slow; how hectic and confusing...yet slow moving the plot has been. I did not enjoy how none of the characters seemed to change or grow. I also didn't enjoy the small parts some of my favorite characters were given. The book is technically well written and the world is wonderful but I am having a hard time seeing where this series is going. If the next book, Cast in Peril, is indeed the last in the series I will read it...if not I think I will hold off for a bit to see if things start coming together a bit better for this series. With the exception of this book and parts of the last book, this has been an excellent fantasy series.

Cast in Ruin was a complex fantasy that is the seventh in the series. Each one builds on the previous books. This one continued the plot thread of Kaylin learning more about herself and preparing for a meeting with the dragon emperor. Along the way she is side-tracked by an investigation into the sudden appearance of seven dead bodies in the fief of Tiamaris. Tiamaris is a dragon who is her friend. So is his tower - Tara. Lord Tiamaris took over this fief and is trying to reconstruct it. However, shadows are still fighting for it.This episode concentrates on the dragons. Kaylin interacts with them in many ways and learns much more about them. Dragons are incredibly touchy and secretive about themselves. She has to have protocol lessons from Lord Diarmat who has a very poor opinion of humans. She is being taught magic by Lord Sanabalis who is rather tolerant for a dragon. She interacts with the Arkon who is the oldest dragon in the Empire and who is the librarian for the Empire. Tiamaris, Sanabalis, and the Arkon are all involved in the investigation in the fief of Tiamaris.Adding to the complexity of the fief are the Norannir who are 8-foot tall aliens who have come from shadows to fight Shadow. They were invited by Tiamaris to settle in his fief but the humans in the fief are still very wary of them. We also learn about the mythology of the Norannir as it intersects with Kaylin's investigation in the fief.I like Kaylin a lot. She is a child of the fiefs who escaped them for the Empire. All she wants to be is a Hawk and uphold the Empire's laws. But she has a sort of magic that makes her more prominent than she would like. Some of the fief lord's want to control her. The dragons are wary of her and her magic because what she is and what she can do is not known to them. And dragons do not like mysteries! It is hard to describe this book because it is so complex and has so many plot threads woven into it. But each episode has excitement and self-discovery and further illuminates a fascinating fantasy world. I can't wait for the next episode - Cast in Peril.

Review: Cast in Ruins by Michelle Sagara 4 STARS MAYBE 5 STARS if I had read the rest.Cast in Ruins is the seventh book in the series and I have not read any of them before. I feel quite lost trying to figure out the different spieces, Who are the leaders, Who are good guys and bad guys. What magic exists. I would not recommend starting this series with book 7. Kaylin Neyas is a private on their police force. It took a long time for me to figure out everything I good understand. I wish I had the time and money to buy and read the first 6 books. I am sure I would have loved the story.I will look for the past books and read future ones. They were complex world who I loved to learn about.Kaylin has her work with the Hawks and as chosen is called away to the fife to look into the deaths of 7 identical women. No one can see why they died and who they were. Servern is her partner in this case.Kaylin before seeing to the case ends up in a battle at the borders with the shadows. She takes control of the one who is fighting her people against his will and gives her his sword which shrinks down to fit her.Kaylin is also taking lessons from Lord Diarmat ln court manners. Diarmat is one of the dragons and does not care for her. She also learns from Lord Sanabalis another court Dragon Who does likes her. Lord Tiamares is over the fife and is considered a young dragon. The tower where he lives and protects from avatar is Tara who can read minds in her tower. The people love her but are scared of dragons.Arkon is a dragon over the library and gets involved with Kaylin case he is over the other 3 dragons but under the emperror. Their is one more dragon that is known as outcast and he his the bad guy and controls the shadows. When Kaylin begins her case it is easier to follow what is happening. Like what I did understand.I was given this ebook in exchange for honest review from Netgalley.
