The Secret of Kite Hill: Lu & Lu, #1
()
About this ebook
Do you know every nook and cranny of your neighborhood? How about UNDER your neighborhood?
Do you let your kids walk home from school? It's just a few blocks, right? What lurks in the shadows? In the bushes? Or scarier yet, under the bushes?
Or is it all just happy-go-lucky Huckleberry Finn and exploring and adventuring in your own neighborhood? When do you know the difference? Maybe your kids know. Maybe they don't. How will you learn?
It began as a simple walk home, the same one we did every day after school. But our dog's ball went into something of a hole, or was it a cave? Maybe a tunnel. But are there tunnels in the city? The ball was pretty close to the entrance, but just far enough to be a little spooky. Should we just forget it?
WARNING TO PARENTS: there are some questionable parenting decisions in this book. It is not intended as a parenting handbook. There's a fine line between making the right decision and making the fun decision. When to choose which? How much do you involve your children in daily decisions? What if they involve danger? But what if your kids think it might be fun? You get the idea. Maybe I need a disclaimer ... ;-)
You know in scary movies when you yell, "Don't go in there!" We went in. Yeah, I know. Ask your 8-year old why.
Bradley Charbonneau
The following is an excerpt from the foreword to Bradley's upcoming book "Every Single Day" (available Oct. 17, 2017). "He no longer resembled the mopey dejected "former writer" I'd known. He became unstoppable. A machine. It wasn't just about the writing, either. It was a deeper transformation. He became much more confident and bold. He was inspiring and even intimidating in some ways. He wasn't the same person anymore. He took risks and wrote books and closed his business and moved his family halfway across the world. He's done so many things I couldn't imagine "2012 Bradley" doing. That he couldn't imagine actually doing. I barely recognize my old friend these days, and I'm glad. He realized his dream and became a professional writer. This book is only a small piece of the proof of that." -- John Muldoon, excerpted from the foreword to "Every Single Day"

I'll Go In If You Go In
K eep an eye on it, Lu! Watch where it goes. If it goes into the spooky brush, I'm not getting it!
I pointed to the edge of the park where scraggly little trees, vines, and bushes grew together like a dark mass of tangled green and brown noodles. I wasn’t joking. The brush was most definitely spooky.
We had been tossing a ball for our dog Pepper and, as anyone knows, some dog balls are just too bouncy. The orange ones with the blue stripes are the worst. Maybe they're good on the beach or in the desert or on the moon, but in small parks — especially haunted ones — they're just too bouncy.
The ball ricocheted like an exaggerated cartoon bouncy ball and went right into the brush. Shoot.
Since I'm the adult, I should be able to say, OK, kids, now don't try this at home, but I'm going to get the ball. I should be able to say that. Well, I can say that, but then I'll have to get the ball. What happens when the adult isn't sure what's in the scary brush? It's not like we have rattlesnakes here
