This book is dedicated to Sir David Attenborough, who, like myself, is a member of the Optimum Population Trust.
For want of a nail, a shoe was lost,
For want of a shoe, a horse was lost,
For want of a horse, a rider was lost,
For want of a rider, a battle was lost,

And all for the want of a horse-shoe nail!
This is a nursery rhyme, repeated by women to their children down the ages, part of our culture, which is disappearing. It is also part of an ancient wisdom, which we are losing. We have so many of these phrases in our culture which—contrary to our present philosophy—we are forgetting: a stitch in time saves nine
; waste not want not
(even more important today). All British parents who have not done so should buy a book of nursery rhymes—preferably by a person called Opie—and start to read them aloud to their children: this is an important part of introducing them to books. We think we are so clever in our age, but we should re-learn these ancient wisdoms.
Science is really only the discovery of Nature’s laws.
Even in the Christian Old Testament there is a whole book called "Proverbs".
An Ethic For Our Time
Introduction
I am very old, and the world seems to be blind. Nobody appears to see that we are killing the ecological world we depend upon: the tiny creatures, and the great predators: the tiger, the Polar bear, the koala, the lion. Then there is the system: who chose capitalism? Seems it just grew
and it is leading us the wrong way. The Market has become a sacred cow, but there is a greater factor, which has been forgotten: it is Nature that should dominate, and its values: they should have priority over all. Then harmony would rule.
I was brought up in the Cotswolds, a beautiful area. My father worked for a garage, and one day took us out for a run in a car (in those days only rich people had cars). Suddenly I shouted out But are they allowed to do that?
Do what?
asked my Mother. I could not explain; I was too young—but I now know what I meant: Build horrid, ugly buildings!
I had never seen ugliness before, and was just shocked by it. Because I was really horrified, but did not know why, that memory has stuck in my mind.
Now, in his book just published: Religion for Atheists, Alain de Botton* suggests that we think up a substitute for religion. While I sympathise with this, I realise that from that day when I was so startled at ugliness when I first sighted it, my whole life has been motivated by that moment: horror at the loveliness destroyed by humanity. But in order to discuss that, let us go right back to the beginning: the stage when life began: the time of the hunter-gatherers. At this juncture we enter prehistory.
They had a religion which has never been improved upon, a goddess recorded in words I cannot better: the words of Ernle Bradford, in his book Mediterranean: Portrait of a Sea: "her groves were in the high places, and her worship is the worship of life itself. She remains for all time the goddess of the Mediterranean peoples. The most ancient of deities, the fertility goddess originally dominated the whole sea. In the Near East and the Aegean her cult had long been paramount. In Crete, the Minoans had paid their tribute to her as a lunar and a snake goddess, and also as mistress of the beasts, the Lady of Wild Things. She had been worshipped in the Maltese islands since the Neolithic period. Fecund and tranquil, her steatopygous images invited men to produce their own kind, to cause their livestock to do the same, and to ensure that the fields grew fertile. She was a peaceful goddess. In the Maltese archipelago, during her uninterrupted reign
