About this ebook

Present Day: Ellie is a young woman who is content with the life she lives. She’s grateful for what she’s been able to accomplish so far, since it allows her some economic stability and lets her help her little sister pay for college. She’s not interested in love, because she saw at a young age what giving her heart away can do to a woman. Her mother was made miserable by her father, a man she loved with all her heart who wound up destroying her. But destiny has a surprise prepared for her, and when she least expects it, she finds herself arriving in an era not her own, in the house of a man she has never seen in her life, with a gruff, bossy personality. All she has with her is a letter in her hands directed to him, informing him that she is the mail-order bride he’d written for some months earlier.

1880: Phillip is a responsible, hard-working, and very handsome man who lives alone and feels the need for a wife. A woman to take care of him and his house, who is obedient and does what he tells her to. Someone strong, who can give him healthy children and not go running at the first difficulty. When he realizes that this skinny woman in strange clothing is the bride they sent him, he is furious and wants to send her away, back to her city, but something in her touches his heart and makes him change his mind. Maybe with a little instruction she can grow to be the kind of woman he’s looking for, but what worries him most is that she seems to be a bit wrong in the head; she keeps saying that she’s from the future.

Ellie just wants to get out of there, and Phillip just wants an obedient wife. What will come out of this mess?

An Obedient Wife - Amaya Evans

    Chapter 1

    ––––––––

    Present Day

Earth to Ellie,  someone said beside her.

It was her sister, who that day was accompanying her at the florist’s.

    What you you thinking about?

I was just giving thanks for what I have, she said, smiling.

Wouldn’t you like to be the owner of this place? she asked her, pointing all around them.

Ellie smiled. Of course, silly, but right now I’m content to be managing it.

I’m not seeing when we’ll be able to work together in the shop.

Would you really like to? She couldn’t see her sister working in a florist’s shop; she imagined her with a beauty salon or clothing boutique. She always noticed her paying a lot of attention to her outfits, buying makeup and watching fashion channels or reading fashion magazines.

Of course! she said, excited, I’ve always wanted to work with you somewhere belonging to the two of us.

But if you’re studying hairdressing, how are you going to run a flower shop?

We could have a place that includes both, don’t you think?

Umm, I don’t know... we’ll see, but first I need you to finish that degree.

There’s not much left, and meanwhile I’ll keep helping you here. She came closer. Speaking of other things, I have something to tell you.

What is it? She looked at her with narrowed eyes. She knew her sister well enough to know she had gotten into some kind of mischief.

It’s just that yesterday I was with my friend Wendy at the mall, and we saw a place with a wedding agency.

Yeah? She’d heard of those places. How crazy was it that people would sell themselves like that?

It doesn’t look so bad to me. After all there are people who don’t have much of a social life, so they go there. In fact... I went inside.

    You did WHAT?

Lizzie, she continued, you don’t need to be in a place like that. You’re young, you have friends, and God knows you have a busy social life.

Yes, that’s true, but I didn’t go there for myself, I went for you.

A sepulchral silence fell. After a minute, Ellie asked her, with a certain foreboding, It was to help someone, I imagine.

Yes, it was to help you.

Are you crazy? I have never said anything about needing a husband or boyfriend.

You don’t say it, but I know you need a love life. You’re very lonely, sis, and I don’t like seeing you like that.

Well it just so happens that I don’t need anything like that, so do me the favor of going back there and deleting everything you’ve given them relating to me.

    But Ellie...

I told you, I don’t want to hear any more about it. She walked away, furious, and entered the storeroom.

Lizzie turned around and left, also furious about having said it to her sister. It would have been better to keep quiet and avoid fighting, but now she’d have to go to that place and cancel everything.

    ––––––––

    Days later...

Ellie, you have a call, said one of the employees.

I’ll get it. She was finishing up with with a customer.

A moment later, she arrived at the office. Well? she answered the call.

Good afternoon, I’m calling for Ellie Drum.

Speaking. How can I help you?

This is Madeleine Crawford. We received your profile a few days ago in our wedding agency, and we have some good prospects for you—in fact there are several interested gentlemen.

Excuse me, the woman interrupted, before the caller could continue. I haven’t given permission for my profile to be used by your agency.

    Pardon? I don’t think I understand.

Yes, it’s because my sister was the one who put in my data and signed me up there, but I haven’t given consent for it.

I’m very sorry to hear that. We are a very serious agency and we aren’t accustomed to this kind of incident. I don’t know how it could have happened, since in general we need the person’s signature to do everything. I beg your forgiveness for the inconvenience.

No worries, I just need you to delete my profile from your agency. In fact, I told my sister to do it, but I see she didn’t listen to me.

Don’t worry, we’ll do it immediately. Anyway, if you’ll do us the favor of coming by the agency’s office in person, you’ll be able to see with your own eyes as we eliminate your name from the database.

Well, I don’t know... the truth is, I’m kind of busy.

The woman insisted, "It’ll only take a moment, I assure you there will be no delays, and in exchange you’ll be able to rest easy, knowing that you yourself saw how your data was removed.

Well, I’ll try to come by for a moment this afternoon. Could you please leave the address in a message on my answering machine?

Very well, I’ll do that. We’ll be expecting you. Have a nice day.

That night, Ellie went to the blasted agency, which was pretty far from where she worked. Everything was dark, and she thought no one was there. Surely it was too late, and they weren’t going to stay there waiting until she arrived. When she was turning around to leave, she heard a noise from inside and saw a light, which came from an office. How strange, she thought she’d seen that that office was dark. A woman appeared, smiling. Good evening.

    Good evening, I’m Ellie.

How are you, dear? I’m Madeleine. We’re under construction, and it looks like a fuse shorted and left us without lights. Follow me this way, she said, showing her the path. They arrived at an office that was pretty cute, with photos of various couples on the wall. There were some dressed in western clothing, and even some clad in outfits from the Middle Ages. How strange, she thought.

These are photos of couples who met through the agency, Madeleine said, excited. I never tire of looking at them and thinking about how this agency has helped so many find the love of their life."

I imagine that makes you happy, she said, trying to hide her discomfort at the fact that she didn’t want to be there, nor had any attention of appearing in any of those sappy photos.

Well, cutie. Let’s get to work. I want you to fill out this form and give me your signature. Take your time looking it over to make sure  you understand what it says, that you’re giving consent to eliminate your information from our agency. She read it and agreed. After signing, the woman left her alone for a moment, saying she’d be back in a minute.

She stayed there, looking over the photos again
