For Ray. Loving you has changed me for the better.
Part One
Krista Howard!
The nurse called her from the open office. You can go back to see the doctor now.
Krista stood up, her legs weak from shaking for an hour straight, and walked out of the waiting room and into the hall beyond it. She followed the nurse and they passed several offices and exam rooms, finally coming to a stop at one. The nurse smiled and walked away. Krista saw Dr. Gaines sitting behind his desk and hurriedly walked in.
Hey, doc. Is there some reason the nurse couldn’t tell me my result?
She tried to remain calm but everything inside her was trembling with fear.
The nurse said you ran in here asking for a pregnancy test. I wanted to make sure you were okay.
He’d been her doctor since she’d come of age, which was a good thing and a bad thing.
I’m fine,
Krista said, waving a hand dismissively.
Well, you’re not pregnant,
He said right away.
She could have fallen over, so great was her relief. She instantly thought of Ruby’s ever-growing belly. She wanted that someday, too, but not under her current circumstances.
But the fact that you worried about it made me want to see you.
I’m good. Everything’s good.
She said the words but she didn’t feel them.
I’ve never known you to take risks in the past. It might be time to discuss going back on the pill.
Doc, you know I don’t want to take any pills. That last one made my hair fall out and made me break out everywhere.
There are different kinds available. And of course, there are other options. There are-
I’m not getting anything inserted into me,
She said, holding up a hand. He’d discussed IUD’s with her before but she refused to go through with something like that.
I just want to make sure you’re safe, Krista. The nurse said you were in a panic. Which tells us that the pregnancy would not have been a welcomed one.
Krista slowly nodded her head. No, it wouldn’t have been a welcomed one. Not when she’d recently broken up with the potential father and had no clue what to do with her life. At least, her career was straight. She loved her job at Jonah’s gym. But her personal life was doomed.
She resented herself for showing her fear when she’d first arrived. And she resented the nurse’s big ass mouth. Nanette, the receptionist and office manager, would have been discreet had she been there.
I had a moment of weakness,
She told the doctor. "For the first time in my life, I didn’t make sure we used protection. It’s never happened to me before and I’m confident it won’t happen again."
She’d been stupefied when it had happened but not really very troubled. Stupid of her, she realized now.
Okay.
He nodded, apparently satisfied. His dark brown skin scrunched on his forehead. The std results won’t be back for a couple days. We can call you. Or you can come back in.
Just call me,
She said quickly. For some reason, she wasn’t concerned about that. As much time as she’d spent with Zach, she just knew he was clean. He cared too much about himself to let himself get anything.
Once she’d left the doctor’s office, she hurried back to the gym. Jonah was home with Ruby. She’d left Rob covering. He was a great manager. She just didn’t like to ask too much of him if she didn’t have to.
After she was locked in her office, she fell back against her chair, the relief hitting her once more. Her periods were mostly regular but when she was stressing about something, they were sometimes late. She was a few days late already and knowing that she’d slipped up with Zach, and that he was the cause of her stress, had sent her running to the doctor’s office.
She only wished she’d gone into the office calmer. But all she’d thought was that she was pregnant and that she’d broken up with Zach the week before and that she didn’t have what it took to be a single parent. Thank god it wouldn’t come to that.
Thinking of Zach brought tears to her eyes. Of course, she wasn’t over him; it had only been about five days since she’d dumped him. But she wished she could hurry and get over him already.
She tried to focus on work but ended up taking her phone out. She had several missed calls and messages from Zach but she ignored them and texted her mother about any desserts. Stacee replied instantly, saying that she’d baked a strawberry cake. She’d just replied to her mom, asking her to save her a slice, when a knock came at her office door.
Come in,
She called, still holding her phone in her hand.
Her brother walked in, a concerned smile on his face.
Hey, Jonah,
Krista said, blinking quickly to get rid of any stray tears. What are you doing here?
Checking up on you.
He sat on the edge of her desk and stared down at her.
You should be home with Ruby,
Krista protested.
She’s the one who made me come,
He said with a short laugh. Jessica called her earlier and said Zach’s a mess. Why didn’t you tell me you two broke up?
You have enough to worry about,
Krista said, putting her phone down and needlessly shuffling papers. She didn’t want to know how Zach was doing.
I’ll never stop worrying about you or caring about what’s going on with you.
She swallowed the lump that
