Press Release from the Lafayette City Police Department:
Detectives with the Lafayette Police Department have received new information regarding 2 bank robberies in 2011, causing the release of Kimrick Lewis of Texas. Lewis was initially arrested and charged in connection with two Hub City bank robberies that occurred in 2011. Investigators had obtained evidence to include Lewis being picked out by eyewitnesses in a photo line-up and also being recognized in photos released to the media by a previous relationship partner.
In January of 2012, Lewis appeared before a judge for a probable cause hearing and the case was found to have enough evidence to proceed with a trial.
In April of 2012, a bank robbery occurred at the same location with many similarities in the case, which investigators questioned and consulted with the Assistant District Attorney assigned to the case. Lewis remained in jail at the time for the previous arrest. Investigators could not produce sufficient evidence that would eliminate Lewis as the suspect who committed the bank robberies.
On Friday, July 13, 2012, the Lafayette Police Department was contacted by the Sulphur Police Department regarding information on a suspect they had arrested on two armed robberies within their jurisdiction. Sulphur Detectives indicated their suspect may have been involved with the Gulf Coast Bank robbery that occurred in April of 2012. Sulphur Police had arrested Malcom Jarmal Scott (27) of Houston, Texas.
On Monday, July 16, 2012, detectives with the Lafayette Police Department traveled to Sulphur with a warrant for a DNA sample from Malcom Scott and to conduct an investigative interview. At the completion of the interview, investigators believe now that Scott is in fact, the suspect responsible for the three robberies that occurred within the City of Lafayette. Investigators immediately notified the Assistant District Attorney handling the case to begin proceeding regarding charges being dropped against Kimrick Lewis.
Today Investigators will issue three arrest warrants to be served to Scott for Armed Robbery. The investigation remains ongoing.
