Common Nouns usually name things in general while, Proper Nouns name specific things.

Example: girl, house, car, motorcycle, horse, tree, books, schools, stores are general things and Ms. Kennedy, Chevrolet, Red Mahogany, Bible, Ateneo De Cagayan, Jollibee are specific things which usually capitalized words. but, nouns can also be abstract in form they name cooncepts, qualities, or emotions such as love and honesty.

The police read Jack Rayburn his rights. The police read Jack and Sue Rayburn their rights. The police must read the defendant their rights. The police must read the defendant his/her rights. The police must read defendants their rights.

such as court, jury , or team, are singular ( unless referring to the members of the court, jury, or team) so they take singular pronouns. After the court heard the testimony, they dismissed the case. After the court heard the testimony, it dismissed the case.

Rule # 1 SINGULAR NOUNS REQUIRE SINGULAR PRONOUNS AND PLURAL NOUNS REQUIRE PLURAL PRONOUNS. -The defendant may claim that the police officers violated his constitutional rights. - William McDonald and George Smith may claim that the police officers violated their constitutional rights.
