Audito Ulwanisyaf 072.10.010 English 3 (Make own abstract) The Mega-Tsunami of July 9, 1958 in Lituya Bay, Alaska ABSTRACT

The biggest tsunami in present times struck at Lituya Bay Alaska on July 9, 1958. This was so big that it is known scientifically as a megatsunami. The wave was brought on by an enormous 8.2 magnitude earthquake, some source say it was a 7.9 on the richter scale that hit the Fairweather Fault and caused massive earth landslide. Definition of tsunami is water waves caused by the displacement of a large volume of a body water, from ocean or large lake by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, explosions, landslides, glacier, and other impacts all have the potential to generate a tsunami waves. In most cases, the tsunami waves occurred most caused by earthquakes or movement of tectonic plates and destroyed beachfront. However, the Lituya Bay tsunami occurred caused by large earthquake along the Fairweather Fault struck in Southeastern Alaska and a combination of disturbances triggered by the earthquake, made a collapse of tidal glacier and rockfall slided down in Gilbert Inlet. Lituya Bay is a long narrow inlet with cliff (fjord) located on the Fairweather Fault, it is T-shaped bay that in the top side of the bay are the Gilbert and Crillon Inlet. The earthquake caused a rock fall in the Gilbert Inlet. When the debris went into the water it created a massive wave that washed 500m high over the headland around the area. The events generated the highest wave ever recorded on Earth, 1.720 feet. However, rock fall or landslide were not the strong cause mechanism to generate 1.720 feet tsunami by the energy imparted to water body and this case still questionable to be further investigated.
