Tickets Increase Since Expansion of New Jersey Snow Removal Law More than 3,645 tickets have been issued to motorists in New Jersey since the amended Snow and Ice Removal law went into effect in October of 2010. Prior to the amendment, law enforcement officers only issued tickets where snow or ice flying off a vehicle resulted in property damage or injuries. Under the amended law, simply driving with snow or ice on the cars roof, hood or trunk is now punishable. Fines under the amended statute range from $200-1,500 when the snow or ice results in injury or damage. Fines range from $25-75 where no apparent harm is present. As of January, approximately 78% of tickets issued resulted in a guilty plea or verdict. Officers in Bergen County issued the most tickets, reporting 1,487 tickets issued for violations of the snow removal law. 269 tickets have been issued in Camden County since the amended law took effect. According to one police officer, ticket rates are higher in industrial areas that use tractor-trailers and other large vehicles. Under the law, motorists are required to remove all snow and ice from their vehicles before the vehicle is put in motion. Failure to remove snow and ice build-up can be quite dangerous to motorists. In one incident, an icy mix flew off of a large truck striking the windshield of the vehicle travelling behind it. The windshield shattered causing the driver serious injuries. In addition to the fines under the statute, drivers who fail to clean off their vehicles may also be subject to civil litigation for their negligence. If you or someone you know has suffered serious injury or death as a result of driver negligence, you may want to consider contacting a personal injury attorney to explain and protect your rights.
