How do Detectors Work?

How do Detectors Work?

Integrating ionisation smoke detector This type of detector works on the same principles as the ionisation smoke detector, but has modified signal processing circuitry which allows an alarm threshold to be present for up to 20 seconds without initiating an alarm. This type of detector is suitable for use in areas where transient high levels of smoke may be expected. Integrating effect in analogue addressable systems In XP95 systems, the integrating effect can be mimicked in both ionisation and optical smoke detectors by adjusting the control equipment software to cause an appropriate delay. Discovery smoke detectors should be set to Mode Two or Mode Four to achieve this effect.

Ionisation smoke detector The sensing part of the detector consists of two chambers - an open, outer chamber and a semi-sealed reference chamber within. Mounted in the reference chamber is a low activity radioactive foil of Americium 241 which enables current to flow between the inner and outer chambers when the detector is powered up. As smoke enters the detector, particles become attached to the ions, causing a reduction in current flow in the outer chamber and hence an increase in voltage measured at the junction between the two chambers. The voltage increase is monitored by the electronic circuitry which triggers the detector into the alarm state at a preset threshold. An externally visible red LED lights up when the detector changes to alarm state. Ionisation smoke detectors are good general-purpose detectors which respond well to fast-burning (flaming) fires and are widely used for property protection.

Optical (photo-electric) smoke detector Optical smoke detectors incorporate a pulsing infra-red LED located in a chamber within the housing of the detector. The chamber is designed to exclude light from any external source. At an angle to the LED is a photodiode which normally does not register the column of light emitted by the LED. In the event of smoke from a fire entering the chamber, the light pulse from the LED will be scattered and hence registered by the photodiode. If the photo-diode sees smoke on the two following pulses, the detector changes into alarm state and the indicator LED lights up. The detector housing is identical to that of the ionisation detector but has an indicator LED which is clear in quiescent state but produces red light in alarm. Optical smoke detectors respond particularly well to slow-burning (smouldering) fires. They are widely used for life protection.

How do Detectors Work?

Heat detector Most conventional heat detectors operate by using a matched pair of thermistors to sense heat. One thermistor is exposed to the ambient temperature, the other is sealed. In normal conditions the two thermistors register similar temperatures, but, on the development of a fire, the temperature recorded by the exposed thermistor will increase rapidly, resulting in an imbalance of the thermistors, causing the detector to change into alarm state. Rate-of-rise detectors are designed to detect a fire as the temperature increases, but they also have a fixed upper limit at which the detector will go into alarm if the rate of temperature increase has been too slow to trigger the detector earlier. The Series 65 and AlarmSense CS (static response) heat detectors have only one thermistor. They change to the alarm state at a preset temperature. Externally, the heat detectors are distinguishable from the smoke detectors by having wide openings to the surrounding atmosphere to allow good movement of air around the external thermistor. A heat detector may be more appropriate than a smoke detector where the environment is dirty or smoky under normal conditions. It must be recognised, however, that any heat detector will respond only when a fire is well established and generating a high heat output. Multisensor detector A multisensor detector is basically an optical smoke detector - so it will respond well to smouldering fires. The addition of a heat sensing element allows the multisensor to give a response to fast burning (flaming) fires which is comparable to that of an ionisation detector. Multisensor detectors are general purpose detectors which respond well to a wide range of fires.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) detector Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas produced by combustion and a CO fire detector is used to indicate the outbreak of a fire by sensing the level of CO in the air. The detector has an electrochemical cell which senses CO, but not smoke or other combustion products. The cells do not require much power, so the detector can be made electrically compatible with ordinary smoke and heat detectors. Apollo manufacturers a CO detector as part of the Discovery range. CO detectors are particularly good at detecting deepseated, smouldering fires. Beam detector A beam detector is made up of three main parts: the transmitter, which projects a beam of infra-red light; the receiver which registers the light and produces an electrical signal; and the interface, which processes the signal and generates alarm or fault signals. When a fire develops, smoke particles obstruct the beam of light and, once a pre-set threshold has been exceeded, the detector will go into alarm. Beam detectors are designed to protect large open spaces such as atria, museums, churches and warehouses. Flame detector A flame detector is designed to detect either ultraviolet (UV) or infra-red (IR) radiation emitted by a fire. The XP95 Dual IR flame detector is sensitive to low-frequency, flickering infra-red radiation. This means that the detector can operate even if the lens is contaminated by a layer of oil, dust, water vapour or ice. Flame detectors are effective in protecting areas where flaming fires may be expected.

Intelligent Fire Detection

Intelligent Fire Detection

In an Intelligent system all devices have unique addresses and are connected in loops to the control panel. Intelligent systems give advanced warning of a developing hazard and can pinpoint the individual device raising alarm. There are two types of intelligent system those with distributed intelligence and those with centralised intelligence. In systems with distributed intelligence the detectors incorporate processors which can determine whether alarm levels of smoke or heat exist and can initiate action accordingly. Detectors in systems with centralised intelligence monitor the air around them for smoke or heat and transmit the data to the control panel on interrogation. The processor in the panel compares the values with stored values and determines whether a pre-alarm or alarm should be signalled. The advantages of distributed intelligence are local adaptation to environment and reduction of traffic on the supply and data wires. The advantage of centralised intelligence is the ability to upgrade a system very quickly and easily by upgrading the control panel.

DISCOVERY

Discovery is a range of high-specification, intelligent fire detectors developed to meet the requirements of sophisticated systems while providing engineers with an additional dimension in fire protection capability. Discovery has a distributed intelligence system where decisions are made in the detector head as well as at the control panel. Drift compensation is also incorporated into the detector, allowing it to adapt to dirty or dusty environments, which reduces false alarms.
Each detector in the Discovery range can operate in one of five response modes, which can be selected from the control panel or hand held programmer. The response characteristics have been carefully set so that the detectors comply with the requirements of the relevant part of EN54 in all response modes. Mode One will give a higher sensitivity to fire than Mode Five. Discovery gives you total reassurance in installations where adaptability to changing conditions and protection against unwanted alarms is paramount. Key features of Discovery include: Rejection of transient signals Flashing LED option Five response modes for ease of optimisation to changing environments Drift compensation to ensure constant sensitivity Four bytes of non-volatile memory for user data Alarm flag for fast alarm reporting Conventional alarm facility during control panel processor fault 360 visibility in alarm Compatible with XP95 systems Insect Resistant

NEW FOR 2009!

The Discovery range has been subjected to a thorough revision of the electronics and this has resulted in significant improvement to the Multisensor detector capabilities. It is possible to read out virtually instantly the analogue values for smoke and heat separately. This enables panel manufacturers to develop features which will provide more effective management of false alarms. An example of this would be an increased smoke value which might normally lead to a pre-alarm or even an alarm. If the heat value is read out separately and it shows little or no rise it can be concluded that it is not smoke from a fire but steam which is causing the high smoke analogue value.

Intelligent Fire Detection

XP95

The XP95 range of intelligent fire detectors is advanced in design, improved in performance and has unique features that benefit the installer and end user.

XP95

intelligent fire detection

The range features smoke detectors (ionisation and optical), standard and high temperature heat detectors and a multisensor. Beam detectors, flame detectors, manual call points, audio visual signalling devices, interface units and isolators complete the range. XP95 has a central intelligence system where all the decisions are made by the control panel. Apollo has always used an open, digital protocol since 1986 and has ensured backward compatibility when developing new products. An open protocol allows freedom of choice for the fire system specifier, installer and end user. A system using a digital protocol is also much less susceptible to corruption than an analogue protocol and is therefore often preferred in a system which is life critical.

Key features of XP95 include: Alarm Flag for fast alarm reporting Alarm Address for fast location of alarm XPERT card addressing Electronics-free base Easy installation Elegant design Insect Resistant

Two-Wire Technology

Two-Wire Technology

In conventional systems, detectors are hard wired into a circuit or zone. They signal a fire condition to a control panel by changing from a high to low impedance. The panel detects this impedance change by current monitoring and identifies the zone. Individual detectors cannot be identified. In two-wire conventional systems, fire detection and alarm products are connected to the same pair of supply wires, making installation quicker, less expensive and more flexible than traditional fourwire systems. Two-wire systems are particularly well suited for small to medium sized buildings.

Two-Wire Technology
ALARMSENSE

35 11

AlarmSense has been developed to make the design and installation of a fire detection and alarm system easier and more economic for small to medium sized buildings. The range also allows an existing system to be extended or modified if necessary. This flexibility makes AlarmSense an excellent choice for use in HMOs.
The AlarmSense range incorporates a number of technologically advanced features such as patented RemovAlert which alerts the control panel if a detector has been removed without authorisation. The entire AlarmSense range has been designed to enable compliance with BS5839-1 and BS5839-6 in addition to EN54 standards. AlarmSense is also compliant with the Construction Products Directive (CPD).

Wireless Technology

Traditionally, fire detection systems in industrial and commercial applications have used hard wired installations. These systems are generally installed at the time of construction or refurbishment, making the laying of cables less of an issue. Certain applications do not lend themselves to this approach, such as occupied buildings, heritage sites, palaces, annexes etc. - this is where wireless systems provide the ideal solution.

Wireless Technology
XPANDER

41 11

XPander is a system in which individual detectors, call points and alarm devices communicate with the XP95 loop by radio signals. An interface is connected to the loop in the same way as any other interface, such as an input/output unit.
Every XPander device is assigned an address and this address is recognised by the control panel in the same way as the address of any other device connected directly to the loop wiring. The XPander range benefits from the patented XPERT technology that is also used in Discovery and XP95. See page 23 for more details. XPander can be incorporated into fire detection systems in stately homes and architecturally sensitive buildings where the use of fire cables is either impractical or undesirable. Key features of XPander include: Easy to install XPERT card addressing Self-monitoring Proven technology No special control panel needed 868MHz radio channels Up to 15 devices per interface Up to 5 interfaces per loop All detectors within the XPander range are sold with mounting bases. Please ensure that you have attended an approved XPander training course prior to purchasing products from the XPander range. A site survey tool must be included in the first order of XPander products as a site survey must be carried out prior to installation.

Intrinsically Safe Detectors

Intrinsically Safe Detectors

There are many places where an explosive mixture of air and gas or vapour is, or may be present continuously, intermittently or as a result of an accident. These are defined as hazardous areas by BS EN 60079, the code of practice for installation and maintenance of electrical apparatus in potentially explosive atmospheres. Hazardous areas are common in petroleum and chemical engineering plants and in factories processing and storing gases, solvents, paints and other volatile substances. Electrical equipment for use in these areas needs to be designed so that it cannot ignite an explosive mixture, not only in normal operation but also in fault conditions. There are a number of methods available to achieve this but one of the most common is intrinsic safety. Apollo offer both conventional and intelligent smoke and heat detector ranges designed to be intrinsically safe, as they meet the requirements of the ATEX directive.

Intrinsically Safe
XP95 IS

95

XP95 Intrinsically Safe (IS) detectors are a development of the well established intelligent XP95 range from Apollo. XP95 IS detectors feature all the benefits of the standard range, but are developed specifically for use in hazardous areas. The addresses of XP95 IS detectors are set by means of the patented XPERT card. See page 23 for more details.

UL

Discovery UL is a range of highspecification, intelligent fire detectors developed to meet the requirements of sophisticated systems while providing engineers with an additional dimension in fire protection capability. Discovery UL has a distributed intelligence system where decisions are made in the detector head as well as at the control panel. Drift compensation is also incorporated into the detector, allowing it to adapt to dirty or dusty environments, which reduces false alarms.
Each detector in the Discovery UL range can operate in one of five response modes, which can be selected from the control panel. The response characteristics have been carefully set so that the detectors comply with the requirements of the relevant part of UL in all response modes. Mode One will give a higher sensitivity to fire than Mode five. Discovery gives you total reassurance in installations where adaptability to changing conditions and protection against unwanted alarms are paramount.
