Atomic Structure Pre-Lab Study Questions 1. Describe the set up of the periodic table.

The table is organized by atomic number, metals, non metals, metalloids, periods , groups and stability.Elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic numbe r. Their physical and chemical properties show a pattern. Elements that have sim ilar properties are arranged in groups in vertical columns. Horizontal rows are called periods. Each period contains more elements than the previous. This is du e to increasing energy levels. 2. Where are the alkali metals and the halogens located on the periodic table? Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr (alkali metals)- F, Cl, Br, I, At, ununseptium (halogens) 3. On the following list of elements: Mg, Cu, Br, Ag, Ni, Cl, Fe, and F, list t he transition elements __Cu, Fe_____________________ and list the halogens __F, Cl, __________________ 4. Complete the list of names of elements and symbols: Name of Element Symbol Potassium ___sodium__ __K________ Na Sulfur _phosphorous____ ___S_______ P Nitrogen __iron___ ____N______ Fe Magnesium ___chlorine__ ___Mg_______ Cl Copper ____silver__ ___Cu_______ Ag A.
